Holiday road operation in place for Mid North Coast

Coffs Mid Coast Traffic Manager of Highway Patrol Acting Inspector Tswi Schutte explains the NSW Operation Christmas/New Year 2023 which will be taking place on the Mid North Coast.

00:00 So today obviously we are here in relation to the Christmas New Year road

00:06 safety operation that has commenced today. Double the merits for offences

00:12 relating to speeding, seatbelts, mobile phones and motorcycle helmets and

00:19 also reinforcing the safety message in relation to drink and drug driving.

00:25 Obviously we'll be out in force this period for both stationary and mobile

00:30 testing and speed enforcement and the old message is that anywhere, anytime you

00:36 can be detected for speeding and then be tested for drugs or alcohol. One message

00:41 I really want to get across is in particularly in relation to novice

00:44 drivers, provisional learners who are restricted to a zero alcohol limit. If

00:48 you have a big night on the drink then the next morning you could still be

00:52 affected so please take that into consideration as well. So that is the

00:56 main message and in relation to people traveling on the highway this period we

01:01 really want to enforce the message of be rested, take plenty of breaks, don't be

01:08 selfish, think about your other motoring public community and arrive at your

01:13 destination safely. Also I really want to make the message about people that are

01:17 passengers in vehicles. If you notice the driver is getting tired or is

01:21 not driving safely please speak up and also we want to enforce the message

01:26 that if you see any kind of dangerous driving behavior please call triple zero.

01:30 If it is very dangerous then we can that will be notified to the local Highway

01:34 Patrol or you could report it to Crime Stoppers which is

01:39 131 444. There's still an element of speeding offences that are

01:44 occurring particularly on the highway and that's the issue obviously that is

01:48 of concern considering that's where the main traffic flow is generally heading

01:52 north so that we do ask people just to be patient and arrive at your destination safely.

01:59 Have you had to call in extra resources from out of area seeing that you know

02:06 we're such a popular holiday destination? Yes correct so we do have deployments

02:10 coming up from different areas or particularly the Highway Patrol just to bolster that

02:14 local support.
