Deputy Harasses And Abandons Stranded Motorist - December 20, 2023

On the morning of December 20th, 2023, deputy/detective John Stott of the Caldwell Parish, Louisiana sheriff's department stopped to check on a stranded motorist. The motorist was from the nearby LaSalle Parish town of Olla, which Stott was once the police chief in until being ousted by voters in 2018. After running a warrant check on the "subject" (I disagree with the use of that word in referring to random citizens who've done nothing wrong), Stott left to deliver toys for the SO's toy drive. (I guess "spreading Christmas cheer" is more important than helping people...)

Clearly Stott didn't stick around to make sure the "subject" got back on the road, as several hours later a concerned passerby called in to report that the man was slumped over the steering wheel. Another deputy (one of the very few in this dept. who's actually good and honest) was responding, but from a good distance away. The Caldwell Parish coroner (88) responded to it as well, apparently thinking the person may have been deceased. In addition, nearby officers from the Tensas Basin Levee District Police heard the call go out and responded to it as well.

It turned out to be the same person and vehicle, in the same spot where deputy Stott had left him several hours prior. Levee District PD jump-started the man's car (and I'm assuming let him warm up in their vehicle as it was pretty chilly that morning) and got him back on the road.

This is not the first time Stott abandoned/refused to help people in need. On one particularly hot day over the summer, when the air temp was 106 degrees and the pavement temp was much hotter than that, Stott passed right by a poor man who was sitting on the shoulder of the highway in the broad-open sun. Shortly thereafter, a concerned passerby (who I guess watched Stott drive right past the guy) called in about it, and Stott got dispatched to it. Stott was already well into LaSalle Parish at the time, a pretty good length of time before his shift ended, but he begrudgingly turned around to go check on the man.

When Stott arrived, he refused to give the man a ride or even let him sit and cool down in his air-conditioned patrol vehicle (did I mention the air temp was 106 degrees?), and threatened to arrest the man for hitch-hiking, before leaving and going home. Nevermind that hitch-hiking is only a minor traffic infraction according to Louisiana law and is not an arrestable offense...

This just goes to show what happens when a sheriff who does not care about the citizens he serves, hires a bad cop who was previously ousted from multiple other agencies for corruption and incompetence, and promotes that bad cop to Detective.
