Wálter Ovando died of a sudden hyperlapse on Sunday, 21 September 2008, after finishing his race at the Autódromo Santa Cruz.

The event on the dirt track located in Santa Cruz, the capital of the Santa Cruz department in eastern Bolivia, was organized by the Asociación de Automovilismo Deportivo "Chino" Méndez (Adecruz). It was the fourth round of the 2008 Campeonato Departamental de Automovilismo Boliviano.

Wálter Ovando, 58-year-old native of Vallegrande, Bolivia, was competing in a Toyota Levy, co-driven by his son, Chery Ovando. Different accounts, erroneously indicated that he was acting as co-driver.

Before venturing into motor racing, just a year and a half before his death, Wálter Ovando was a regular on provincial motorcycle racing. He had won the National title in 1995, in the 125 cm3 "mecánica nacional" class. This was his ninth start as a race car driver, his second at the wheel of the Toyota Levy.
