00:00 Patriots Daily is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wedgering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:06 What's going on everyone, it's Taylor Kiles here for CLNS Media.
00:10 Entering Sunday's matchup against the Chiefs, the Patriots were expected to play a heavy dose of main coverage,
00:15 as they had never played zone on 50 or more percent of Patrick Mahomes' dropbacks in four career games
00:21 against the reigning MVP and Super Bowl champion.
00:24 Now, the Patriots had really found their stride defensively since their bye week, albeit not against great competition,
00:30 and the Chiefs were really struggling, as Patrick Mahomes' receivers simply weren't getting things done,
00:35 specifically in crunch time, which led to the Chiefs having only won one of their previous four games entering the matchup.
00:42 But when Sunday's game started, the Patriots' man in zone rates and production completely flipped.
00:48 The Patriots played zone coverage on almost 59% of Patrick Mahomes' dropbacks,
00:53 but Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense combined for a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating when facing main coverage.
01:01 Against zone coverage, that rating dropped all the way down to 66.
01:06 Now, the Patriots weren't perfect in zone coverages.
01:08 Not only was Mahomes able to work his magic and extend plays to find open receivers,
01:13 but I also thought there were some missed opportunities where there were open receivers that Mahomes didn't end up finding.
01:18 But to the Patriots' credit, they were able to pick off Mahomes twice, with Marte Mappu actually baiting him into a pick,
01:24 and they were able to wrap up receivers and mitigate yards after the catch.
01:28 But what exactly happened in main coverage, and how did a unit that's been so good in that area struggle so mightily in a way that we haven't really seen against Mahomes?
01:37 I dove into the tape for a deeper dive to find out why the Patriots struggled,
01:42 but also how they stood up to the challenge and actually managed to shut Patrick Mahomes down on some of their main coverage dropbacks.
01:49 Andy Reid showed absolutely zero regard for decency on the Chiefs' first touchdown against the Patriots,
01:56 and I'm going to break down why exactly that is.
01:58 So against a Bill Belichick defense, Andy Reid always knows that he's going to get main coverage once they get in scoring territory,
02:06 especially inside the 10-yard line.
02:08 The tough part is you don't always know exactly what kind of main coverage you're going to get from Belichick in these situations,
02:15 and beyond that, Belichick's defenders are very well coached.
02:19 They understand how to play with proper leverage, proper depth, proper spacing,
02:24 so that when you try to get them to run into each other with rub or pick plays, it doesn't usually work.
02:30 So it's not easy to score on these guys, especially in the red zone.
02:34 But what Andy Reid is going to do to work his way around that is basically just overwhelm the Patriots' defense with information
02:41 by showing them a look I'm pretty sure they've never seen before, and based on how they react to it, which you'll see,
02:47 it's a pretty good guess that this wasn't something that they saw in film or were prepared for.
02:51 So just to get into the nitty-gritty of exactly how Andy Reid was able to basically short-circuit Bill Belichick's defense.
02:59 So the first thing that the Chiefs do to confuse the Patriots' defense is come out in an unbalanced line.
03:06 So what does that mean?
03:07 As you can see, usually the center, Creed Humphrey, would be the one snapping the ball with the guard and tackle to each side.
03:14 But here, you're going to have Joe Tooney, the left guard, actually snapping,
03:19 and instead of a guard and a tackle to his right, you're going to have right guard, Trey Smith, beside him.
03:26 But then, to his left, you have the center, Creed Humphrey, you actually have the left tackle, Wanya Morris, beside him,
03:33 and all the way out to the left, you're going to have Jawan Taylor.
03:37 So all the beef is to Joe Tooney's left, and he only got one lineman to his right side.
03:43 And then the Chiefs are actually in 12 personnel.
03:46 So to make things even more confusing, in the spot where you'd usually have a right tackle, you've got one tight end,
03:53 all the way to the left, where you'd usually have an in-line tight end opposite him,
03:57 you've actually got a wide receiver, another wide receiver beside him on the wing,
04:02 with a tight end acting as a fullback in the backfield.
04:05 And here's where things get really tricky.
04:07 Here's where there's just way too much information to process all at once,
04:10 and it's going to create a lot of confusion with the Patriots' defense.
04:14 Behind Joe Tooney, alright, so once you identify who's actually snapping the football,
04:19 you'll notice that it's not Patrick Mahomes, it's actually Jarek McKinnon, the running back,
04:24 who's under center, with Patrick Mahomes beside him.
04:28 And another layer of confusion, this is the shotgun, but instead of having somebody either in a traditional shotgun
04:35 or the wildcat standing up to receive the snap, both Mahomes and Jarek McKinnon are crouched down,
04:41 almost in fullback-type positions, where they have a hand in the dirt.
04:45 So you really don't know, even if you have an idea of who's going to get the snap,
04:49 you're not sure how this is going to work out post-snap,
04:52 but the Chiefs are basically screaming to you that the ball is going left because that's where most of their bodies are.
04:57 So now, let's take a look at how they actually run this play,
05:01 because the Patriots respond in nickel, with the five-man front,
05:04 and most of their beef is slid over to where the Chiefs' beef is, over to Kansas City's left-hand side.
05:11 So the play, it looks like the Chiefs are running some type of speed option,
05:16 where Patrick Mahomes can get the pitch, Jarek McKinnon's going to get the ball and go outside,
05:21 and then you've got down blocks on Christian Barmore, Devon Godshaw,
05:26 and then Jelani Tavai, with Keon White actually going unblocked.
05:30 So they want you to think that this play is going to the defense's right.
05:34 Again, that's why they have all the beef over to that side.
05:37 But what's actually going to happen is that the Chiefs are running what's going to be a jet toss, or a jet pass,
05:45 where they're just going to flick the ball in front of them.
05:47 It should count as a run, but for whatever reason, it's a pass.
05:51 And it's going to actually start with Ray "She" Rice, the wide receiver,
05:55 who's on the wing over to where all the players are for the Chiefs.
05:58 He's going to come all the way across the formation,
06:01 and it's going to be a counterplay in terms of the blocking scheme,
06:04 where you have Creed Humphrey kicking out, then you have Jawan Taylor,
06:09 and I believe that's Blake Bell, in the backfield,
06:12 are going to be lead blockers as well, escorting Ray "She" Rice to the other side of the formation.
06:17 And then you're going to have Noah Gray come up to the second level,
06:21 and basically either block the most dangerous man, or whoever is in main coverage against Ray "She" Rice,
06:27 who in this situation is Alex Austin.
06:30 Now Alex Austin, not only is he going to have to find a way to get through all the traffic to get to his man,
06:36 but there's so much window dressing that it creates a lot of confusion throughout the Patriots' defense.
06:41 So we're going to see, you see Jawan Bentley, Jonathan Jones, and Jabril Peppers
06:47 all try to get over to the right side, because since they're in main coverage,
06:50 they're trying to identify where their assignment is.
06:53 I'm not 100% sure where they're supposed to be going, but my guess is,
06:57 is that Jawan Bentley is taking somebody in the backfield along with Peppers,
07:00 and then Jonathan Jones is trying to get to the other side to Justin Watson,
07:04 who looks like an in-line tight end to the offense's left side.
07:08 So the defense is trying to account for all the bodies to that side,
07:12 even though the run is going to end up in the spot that they've all vacated.
07:16 So slow motion, and then you see at the point of attack,
07:20 Ray "She" Rice has a wide open lane, because Josh Uche is trying to take on the pullers
07:24 and create some congestion there, but Kyle Duggar, who is blitzing off the edge,
07:29 is too deep in the backfield to make a play on this.
07:32 Christian Barmore is probably still trying to figure out where the ball is,
07:36 while taking on a down block.
07:38 And then you can see, Devon Gauchaw isn't sure where the ball is.
07:41 He's actually looking right to where Jarek McKinnon is.
07:44 You've got Jawan Bentley looking over to the left, realizing that he's not in position to make a play.
07:49 And Keon White, who isn't blocked, doesn't have a good idea of who has the ball at all,
07:54 which is pretty understandable.
07:56 So then you're going to see Ray "She" Rice gets through this lane,
07:59 and then you see the tight end, Noah Gray, getting up to the second level
08:03 and blocking Alex Austin, who is responsible for Ray "She" Rice.
08:07 And you'll actually see Jalen Mills has no idea who has the ball.
08:11 He's still confused. He doesn't really figure it out until the ball is already in the end zone.
08:17 A lot of confusion, a lot of stuff to make the Patriots defense think.
08:22 Great job by Andy Reid showing them something that they hadn't seen before.
08:43 So after yesterday's game, one of the things that Patriots defenders mentioned repeatedly
08:48 was communication, or rather miscommunication, and how it led to some of the Chiefs' bigger plays.
08:54 And one of the plays that they mentioned specifically was the big screen reception allowed against Clyde Edwards-Hillaire.
09:01 Now, we're going to break down what happened on the Patriots' side, what happened on the Chiefs' side,
09:05 because I think I have an idea of what might have gone wrong on this play.
09:09 I can never know for sure without knowing the play call, but I'm going to take my best crack at it.
09:13 So the Patriots come out in Cover 1.
09:16 You're going to see that Kyle Duggar is in man coverage initially against Travis Kelsey.
09:22 And it looks like, based on the fact that everyone on the defensive line rushes the passer,
09:27 that Juwan Bentley was originally responsible for Clyde Edwards-Hillaire.
09:31 But what we're going to see is the Chiefs are going to show a split inside zone with reverse action from Kedarius Tony.
09:39 So this is throwing a lot at the Patriots.
09:41 You've got all the motion from the skilled players going over to the offense's left.
09:47 You've got Travis Kelsey on the sift block going across the formation to look like he's kicking out Jelani Tavai.
09:53 You've got Kedarius Tony, who with his athleticism and speed you have to respect coming around.
09:58 And then Clyde Edwards-Hillaire is just going to make it look like he's going downhill either on an inside zone run
10:03 or as a decoy on a potential reverse for Tony.
10:07 But what's actually going to happen is this is a screen.
10:10 So in reality, the interior for the Chiefs offensive line is going to go out to block.
10:15 Each of the tackles is going to pass protect to just get the edge rushers out of the way.
10:20 And all of the routes and all the skilled players are going once again to the left side of the field
10:25 to completely wipe out the Patriots man coverage.
10:28 When Andy Reid has an idea of what's coming, it makes it easier to fool New England
10:32 and capitalize with all their defenders looking at their man and trying to cover them.
10:38 So we're going to see what happens to Kyle Duggar and Jawan Bentley.
10:42 Because what I think is supposed to be the adjustment for this play is once you get Travis Kelsey coming across the formation,
10:50 in order to avoid Kyle Duggar getting picked, I think he was supposed to pass this off
10:56 and have Bentley cover Kelsey while he took the back and just have them both switch assignments.
11:01 But here's how it actually plays out.
11:03 So you see Kyle Duggar triggered downhill once he sees the run action.
11:08 You got Kelsey coming across the formation. You got Tony going around.
11:11 It looks like run to him. And Jawan Bentley is still trying to diagnose, see what's going on.
11:17 And then you see Kyle Duggar is all the way in the backfield.
11:22 He's rushing. You got the guys in man coverage going across the field.
11:26 And look at that. You got Kyle Duggar looking at the reverse, which he was playing.
11:31 All the defensive linemen on the inside are upfield.
11:34 And then you got Clyde Edwards-Hillaire wide open in the flat for the screen
11:38 as his linemen are going out to set up some blocks.
11:41 So you've got a ton of space. Takes a while for everybody to figure out what's going on.
11:45 You've got Chase and then Jabril Peppers. Now he makes a solid attempt at a tackle here.
11:50 But Clyde Edwards-Hillaire shows off why he was a first round pick with that elusiveness.
11:54 Look at this. He's going to jump and hurdle Peppers and slip out of the tackle.
11:59 It's not a bad tackle attempt from Peppers. He tries to wrangle with the feet.
12:04 But Edwards-Hillaire makes it so that only one of the feet is available, keeps his balance, stays upfield.
12:11 And then he gets a block. Team Miles Bryant against Joe Tooney.
12:15 And good effort from Alex Austin, who was all the way on the other side of the formation,
12:19 making the tackle to prevent a touchdown.
12:22 Just a really good play call there from the Chiefs.
12:25 We're going to see it from the end zone angle so you get a better appreciation of what happens in the box.
12:29 So you see Kyle Duggar is coming downhill.
12:32 Look at all these guys attacking either Mahomes or the reverse.
12:36 Christian Barmore is flying upfield thinking maybe he's got a sack, maybe he's got to chase Tooney.
12:41 Devon Godshaw is kind of just getting penetration and diagnosing what's going on.
12:45 And Kyle Duggar is thinking this is a reverse, I've got to chase.
12:48 Even Jawan Bentley, although he isn't really responsible for diagnosing, I don't think, the screen.
12:53 If he no longer was responsible for Clyde Edwards-Hillaire.
12:56 Because he's got his eyes, as you can see, on Travis Kelsey.
13:00 But yeah, again, just a perfect play call to beat man coverage and take advantage of an aggressive pass rush from the Patriots.
13:08 Once again, great elusiveness from Clyde Edwards-Hillaire.
13:11 And then Alex Austin making the tackle.
13:14 Another way the Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid attack the Patriots man coverages
13:19 was by using condensed formations to manipulate the Patriots coverage rules.
13:23 So again, the Patriots man-heavy defense.
13:26 The Chiefs on this play are going to come out in a 3x1 formation with Travis Kelsey by himself to the bottom of the screen
13:32 and all three wide receivers on the field to the top.
13:35 Now in the slot you're going to see a stack formation, which is two wide receivers close together.
13:39 There's one wide out outside the numbers, but he's going to motion inside to create a stack,
13:45 which is three receivers all in the same area.
13:48 So the Patriots are going to have to figure out how they want to pass this off.
13:52 Do we want to just cover whoever's across from us?
13:54 Do we want to pass these routes off?
13:56 That's up to them, and you're going to see them try to figure that out once the play kind of gets going.
14:02 So you can see Jonathan Jones, Miles Bryant, Alex Austin communicating, trying to signal who has who in the zoo.
14:09 Now based on what they decide, Jonathan Jones, the outside corner, is going to take the final number one receiver.
14:15 Miles Bryant in the slot takes the final number two, and Alex Austin all the way inside is going to take the final number three.
14:22 But what exactly does that mean? What is the final number? What is that?
14:26 So based on how the receivers are aligned right before the snap, the receiver who motions inside is the number one,
14:34 because we count outside in.
14:36 So the receiver who is behind the point man, that's the guy in the line of scrimmage, is the two,
14:40 because he's between the number one and the number three.
14:43 The inside most receiver, the stack, is the number three.
14:46 So that's how it would work if the Patriots are playing straight up man-to-man coverage.
14:50 They're just going to take the guy across from them.
14:52 What's going to happen instead is the Chiefs are going to use a route concept that changes who is the number one and who is the number three.
15:01 You're going to see the initial number three take an outside vertical, and the initial number one take an inside vertical,
15:08 with that number two running an out-breaking route after pretending to go inside.
15:12 So instead of number three, he's going to become the number one, the inside most receiver.
15:18 The outside receiver is going to go from the number one to the number three.
15:22 So Jonathan Jones needs to take that number one route, the outside vertical,
15:27 and Alex Austin needs to take the number three vertical route inside, with Miles Bryant defending the out.
15:33 So let's see how this plays out.
15:35 Actually, Jonathan Jones makes a mistake here.
15:38 He has a miscommunication where he thinks that that number one outside receiver is still the number one,
15:43 and he actually goes inside to take that route.
15:46 But you'll see he realizes his mistake, turns around, and Mahomes actually has an opportunity to hit this outside receiver if he wants.
15:54 But that's not where he's looking.
15:55 He's looking at Miles Bryant.
15:57 And we're going to see that Miles Bryant understandably sees this route and anticipates an in-breaking crosser.
16:03 But what's actually going to happen is the receiver is going to break back outside, create a lot of separation,
16:10 and it's easy to pick on Miles Bryant there.
16:12 But once again, it's really hard when you think you're getting an inside breaking route like that.
16:18 You just try to respect it.
16:20 Rayshe Rice just has a great cut out of that break.
16:24 Patrick Mahomes finds him.
16:26 Relatively easy first down.
16:28 Good scheming from the Chiefs.
16:29 As well as Andy Reid schemed up his offense against the Patriots' main coverage looks,
16:34 there were also times where Patrick Mahomes was just Patrick Mahomes,
16:37 and he made incredible plays despite the defense doing everything right initially.
16:41 And Kansas City's last touchdown of the game was a perfect example of this.
16:45 So you're going to get, once again, the Patriots' man-to-man coverage,
16:49 specifically cover one with Jabril Peppers.
16:51 He's not really playing the post.
16:53 He's really kind of just splitting the difference in the end zone,
16:56 making sure that nothing is in front of him and that he can at least have enough depth to affect any throw
17:02 that's directly behind him in the middle of that area.
17:05 Now again, we get man-to-man coverage across the board with Jawan Bentley and Jelani Tavai.
17:10 Basically bracketing the running back in whichever direction he ends up in,
17:14 that's going to be the linebacker who takes him,
17:16 and the other player is going to essentially spy Patrick Mahomes.
17:20 But there's an interesting wrinkle because, once again,
17:23 the Chiefs come out in a 3x1 formation with Travis Kelsey to the bottom
17:27 and all three wide receivers to the top.
17:29 So Rishi Rice, the number three, ends up being covered by a safety in Kyle Duggar and Travis Kelsey.
17:35 Usually a tight end wouldn't be a mismatch against a corner,
17:38 but with a young player like Alex Austin, specifically a rookie like Alex Austin,
17:42 it's not a great matchup for the Patriots.
17:44 And in terms of the route concept, to the top of the screen we're going to get a stick concept.
17:49 So Rishi Rice is going to be running a stick, or in this case,
17:53 it's specifically an out route against Kyle Duggar,
17:56 who already has outside leverage because he's got help in the post from Jabril Peppers.
18:01 Then you're going to have Kelsey running an out breaking route into Alex Austin's outside leverage.
18:07 But the best option on this play is Clyde Edwards-Hillaire running an angle route from the backfield.
18:13 But this isn't super easy because, once again, although Jelani Tavaik technically will have him
18:18 because the running back is going into his leverage,
18:21 Jawan Bentley still has eyes on Mahomes and can read his eyes to try to make a play on the ball.
18:27 So post snap, what we're going to see is Mahomes first looks to Rishi Rice against Kyle Duggar.
18:33 That's not there.
18:35 Kyle Duggar does a good job. Then you see him look left.
18:38 He wants Travis Kelsey, but Alex Austin, once again, the route is breaking into his leverage
18:43 and he does a good job smothering the route.
18:45 So finally, Kelsey looks underneath to Clyde Edwards-Hillaire,
18:49 but Jawan Bentley is coming downhill.
18:52 He is going to obliterate the running back if this throw gets made.
18:56 Hospital ball, Mahomes is smarter than that, so he's not going to throw it.
19:00 But Dietrich Weiss does a great job of condensing the pocket and getting Mahomes to actually get uncomfortable
19:06 and have to reset.
19:08 And you see that Jelani Tavaik and Jawan Bentley have good coverage right now.
19:13 But Tavaik is looking at Patrick Mahomes, who has broken the pocket,
19:17 which is going to allow Hillaire to sneak behind him and try to make a play in the back of the end zone.
19:22 Now Devon Godshaw does a great job condensing the pocket from the inside
19:27 and coming off of his block to chase down Mahomes.
19:30 Unfortunately, like I said, Mahomes is still Mahomes.
19:33 He's going to capitalize on Jelani Tavaik having lost his target for just a second.
19:39 Hillaire finds space.
19:41 Great pass over the linebacker touchdown.
19:43 We're going to take a look at this from the end zone angle as well to appreciate what happens up front.
19:48 First, we look at Dietrich Weiss against Wanya Morris, a rookie.
19:51 So we get that inside hand into his chest,
19:54 and then Wanya Morris tries to make contact with his outside hand.
19:57 But Weiss forklifts that arm to create some space
20:01 and then is able to push the rookie back, condense the pocket,
20:05 and then Mahomes tries to get outside.
20:08 But we're going to see from Devon Godshaw against Trey Smith does a great job just bull rushing,
20:14 condense, condense, put the pocket in Mahomes' lap, then gets off of the block to chase.
20:20 But once again, Mahomes, perfect pass over Jelani Tavaik's head.
20:24 Great play by the Chiefs.

20:55 Now as much as the Patriots man coverage struggled against Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and the Chiefs passing concepts,
21:05 they did have three sacks when playing man coverage.
21:08 That was all three of their sacks in the game.
21:10 They also had a pass rush win rate and a pressure rate over 40%.
21:15 So the Patriots front was getting work done and getting after Mahomes,
21:19 even when the coverage couldn't always come through.
21:22 But all three of their sacks wound up killing drives for the Chiefs.
21:26 And the first one, which we're going to break down now,
21:28 turned a second and nine for Kansas City into a third and 16, where they would punt one play later.
21:34 So let's take a look.
21:36 Patriots are going to play more cover one.
21:38 We've seen a lot of this, but it's a little different this time,
21:41 because Kyle Duggar is going to be coming down as a robber,
21:44 where he's essentially going to be doing what Jabril Peppers does as the post safety,
21:48 but in the intermediate part of the field.
21:50 So Jabril Peppers is taking away anything deep and inside,
21:53 and Kyle Duggar is reading Mahomes, and he's going to take away anything intermediate and inside.
21:58 Now you've got Jawan Bentley mugging the A-gap right over the center.
22:03 Mugging basically just means he's threatening like he's going to blitz.
22:06 And the Chiefs are going to keep their five offensive linemen in,
22:10 as well as the running back, just to ensure that Patrick Mahomes,
22:14 not making that mistake again, making sure he has enough time to get this pass off.
22:19 But because the back stays in, Jawan Bentley is free to just read Mahomes.
22:24 So the Patriots essentially have a zone defender around their man coverage
22:28 in the short, intermediate, and deep parts of the field.
22:32 And that's going to be pretty tough for the Chiefs.
22:35 Now you're going to see Travis Kelsey motion inside.
22:37 This is pretty common for him.
22:39 It's an indicator to show what coverage the defense is in.
22:42 With Jalen Mills following him to that number three spot,
22:45 the Chiefs know they've probably got main coverage.
22:47 And what they're going to run is, after Kelsey goes in his little motion or his little shift,
22:52 he's going to run a crossing route that goes right into Kyle Duggar's
22:56 robber coverage over the middle of the field.
22:58 Then you're going to see an option route from the number two.
23:01 And although he's basically just trying to beat Miles Bryant, who has outside leverage.
23:05 So he's going to break inside, but things are going to get complicated
23:08 because Jawan Bentley, once again, is basically just playing a short zone in the middle.
23:12 So he's going to wall off the route as well.
23:14 Then on the outside to the three receiver set, you're basically just going to have a clear out
23:18 and then at the backside a curl in case Mahomes liked his matchup.
23:22 So let's see how this ends up playing out.
23:24 Now first Mahomes looks at Rayshe Rice on the option route.
23:27 And I think this was just to try to make coverage move and create an opening for the crosser to Kelsey
23:32 because he doesn't stay on it very long.
23:34 And you see that here.
23:35 Sal, he resets his eyes, he's looking down the middle of the field,
23:38 but it's not a good picture because you've got Kyle Duggar coming down on the route
23:42 and Jawan Bentley, like I said, in that short zone.
23:46 But then Mahomes is going to say, "Okay, I don't want to throw the crosser.
23:48 Let me get back to the option route."
23:50 But Miles Bryant, it's been too long, so he has time to come down on this.
23:55 And because of that time, the rush is able to get in.
23:58 You've got Josh Uche threatening the edge, Christian Barmore winning inside.
24:03 Coverage complements pass rush.
24:05 Christian Barmore gets the sack.
24:08 He had a dominant day.
24:10 We're actually going to look at the end zone angle to get a better appreciation once again
24:14 of how this plays out up front.
24:16 So first Josh Uche against the rookie, Wanya Morris.
24:19 Hesitation to catch him off guard.
24:21 He tries to--you're going to see me--he tries to get that outside arm down,
24:27 kind of shorten the edge.
24:28 That allows him to get and turn the corner, which is what initially spooks Mahomes,
24:33 it looks like.
24:34 And he thinks he has an alley to get outside.
24:36 But then we're going to see because of Barmore--we're going to highlight right here.
24:40 Let's get this thing going.
24:43 Overpowers Trey Smith.
24:46 First, Trey Smith does a pretty good job not getting bullied.
24:49 Barmore gets into his chest, pushes him back, and because Uche flushes Mahomes,
24:54 Barmore is able to capitalize, disengage, and bring him down.
24:58 The Patriots' last sack of the game, which was also the last competitive play
25:02 for the Chiefs offense, was another great example of the pass rush and the coverage
25:07 marrying together, complementing each other, and creating a positive outcome
25:10 for the defense.
25:12 So again, we're going to see man-to-man coverage across the board.
25:16 We're going to take another split-field look where the Patriots' safeties are going
25:19 to disguise their intentions pre-snap, but this time Kyle Duggar is actually going
25:23 to become the post-safety in the middle, while Jabril Peppers comes down to take
25:27 the back, and we're actually going to get a blitz down low.
25:31 So we're going to see Mac Wilson is on the edge.
25:34 He's going to rush opposite Josh Uche.
25:36 They're going to try to condense the edges.
25:38 And then you've got Jawan Bentley, who's going to be part of a line game
25:42 with Keon White.
25:44 Now for the route concept, backside we've got an in-breaker.
25:47 It's not really, I don't think, part of the progression here.
25:50 To the very bottom, you're going to see Travis Kelsey.
25:52 He's going to run a whip route because I think that the Chiefs want to make this
25:56 look like some kind of levels concept where you've got a bunch of routes all
26:00 breaking in one direction.
26:02 And here it looks like initially the routes break inside before coming out.
26:05 The number two receiver is going to run the deepest route here.
26:08 So he's going to pretend like he's running a post before breaking out in what's
26:12 called a blaze out.
26:14 You usually see it from outside the numbers, but here it's going to be a post
26:17 route that he's going to break out into an out route.
26:20 Now you're probably wondering why there's a question mark over the number three
26:24 receiver.
26:25 I'll explain that because he doesn't exactly get to finish his route.
26:28 So, all right, Mahomes takes the snap.
26:31 And you're going to see that Miles Bryant tries to make contact.
26:34 And Mahomes is looking that way to the number three, but he ends up falling.
26:39 You see that right there?
26:41 He stumbles.
26:42 And then Mahomes is at the top of his drop.
26:44 So he doesn't have a lot of time to go through his progression here.
26:47 But when he tries to, Mac Wilson has already won against Jawan Taylor at right
26:52 tackle, which is impressive because Taylor was a big for agent signing.
26:55 And Mac Wilson is not someone who's typically thought of as an edge rusher,
26:58 but he's really come on as of late in that role.
27:02 And then on the inside, Christian Barmore once again is wreaking havoc.
27:06 And he beats Trey Smith, which he did all game, and creates disruption at
27:10 Patrick Mahomes' feet.
27:12 Mahomes doesn't get to go to his first read, and because of the pressure,
27:16 doesn't get to go much further.
27:18 Now we're going to look at the end zone angle to get another perspective on this.
27:21 Great rush from Mac Wilson.
27:24 Explodes off the ball.
27:26 You're going to see him try to chop that outside arm.
27:28 He misses, but you're going to see that he is able to dip around the edge.
27:33 Really impressive bend for a guy who's traditionally a stand-up linebacker.
27:37 So he rips around the corner.
27:39 Pressures Mahomes.
27:41 And then we're going to get a look at Barmore as well.
27:44 So, just whop!
27:48 That's a Reggie White classic.
27:52 So he's just going to slap Trey Smith, overpower him, just run through.
28:00 Overwhelming from Barmore.
28:02 And he does lose his balance, but still, he's right at Mahomes' feet.
28:07 Mac Wilson wraps up.
28:09 Got a sack.
28:10 Again, this was the last competitive play of the game for the Chiefs offense.
28:15 Great stop for the Patriots defense to give its offense a chance,
28:18 and potentially coming back down 10 points late in the game.
