Canadian racer Daniel Brossoit was a talented hydroplane pilot from St. Timothee, Québec, Canada. His promising career was cut short when he suffered a fatal accident during qualifying for his hometown Valleyfield Regattas, held on Friday, 05 July 1991, on San Lorenzo River. Involved in the crash, one spectator was also killed and four other persons were injured.

Brossoit's fatal accident happened during a qualification run. While running on a straightaway at a speed of more than 100 mi/h (160 km/h), his Executive team hydroplane went out of control and flipped in the air. It was hit by the oncoming boat driven by defending race champion Jimmy King of the United States. King was tossed unconsious in the water as his boat went airborne and crashed into a wharf where a crowd was standing.

One of the spectators, John MacKenzie, aged 43, was hit by the debris and died on the spot. Daniel Brossoit was found dead in his boat, while spectators diving into the water to retrieve Jimmy King, who sustained minor injuries. Three other spectators also sustained injuries.

This was the first ever fatal accident at the Valleyfield Regattas, since the first edition of the event which was held in 1939.
