Brussels launches legal action against Elon Musk's X over illegal content, disinformation

The European Commission has launched legal action against social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, under its landmark law for online platforms, the Digital Services Act (DSA).

00:00 The European Union is investigating the social media platform X over possible breaches of

00:05 social media law. It`s the first time that the European Commission launches an infringement

00:10 procedure under its Digital Services Act. The legislation was approved to create a safer

00:15 digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected and to establish a

00:19 level playing field for businesses.

00:23 The opening of proceedings means that the commission will now investigate its assistance

00:26 and policies related to certain suspected infringements. It does not prejudge the outcome

00:31 of the investigation.

00:32 The decision was announced on the social media platform itself by Thierry Breton, the commissioner

00:37 in charge of the EU`s internal market.

00:40 The investigation will look into whether X, formerly known as Twitter, failed to do enough

00:44 to curb the spread of illegal content. And also, whether measures to combat information

00:48 manipulation were effective.

00:50 The EU will also examine whether X was transparent enough on the matter. The European Commission

00:55 has already called out Elon Musk, X`s owner, to do more towards eliminating hate speech,

01:00 misinformation and violent terrorist content related to the war between Israel and Hamas.
