When Shakespeare penned Romeo and Juliet more than 500 years ago, he could hardly have imagined that his fearless, passionate heroine would become a confidant for heartsick lovers around the globe. But today, some 50,000 people write to Juliet every year—they write about loves lost and happily-ever-afters, or ask for advice on disapproving families or learning to love. And a group of dedicated "secretaries" in Verona, Italy respond with kindness and guidance, on her behalf. For these people, Juliet’s story isn’t one that ends in woe—it’s a reminder that love is universal.
