Imelda Staunton reflects on The Crown's approach to conspiracy theories around Princess Diana's death

The Queen Elizabeth II star speaks to Yahoo UK about how the Netflix show examines the change in the Royal family&#39;s relationships after Princess Diana&#39;s death, and the conspiracy theories that arose in the aftermath.

00:00 This season also kind of looks at the way that the relationships between the royal family

00:03 have developed, especially in light of Princess Diana's death.

00:06 And I've always quite interested in the developments between Charles and William, for example,

00:12 and there's a particularly powerful scene between them in which William is placing blame

00:16 on his father for that happening.

00:19 And I wonder, how did you find the way, or what did you make of the way the show examines

00:24 that subject, but also the idea of fatherhood and what that means?

00:27 A great thing about Peter's writing is that he, that's why he's done this.

00:33 He's done The Crown, to examine the human relationships and the human condition in an

00:40 institution.

00:41 You know, they are a family, you could say they're like any other, there's dysfunction

00:47 in the family, and yet they have to put on a face, they have to carry on, and investigating

00:53 husband-wife relationships, father-son.

00:55 I mean, it's all there in Peter's writing, and that's why every actor wants to be in

01:02 it, because you want to tell those stories.

01:05 And of course, as we say, it's a drama, and he's imagining what goes on behind closed

01:09 doors, but that's investigation worth listening to, because it just gives people a glimpse

01:15 of what might have happened, or makes you think about your own relationship, or, you

01:18 know, gosh, your fathers and sons, even in a palace, have difficulties.

01:22 So that's the great thing about his writing.

01:25 He investigated what was already out there in the world about the conspiracy, and so

01:30 he just showed it again, but then you're looking at the royal family's attitude to that, sort

01:38 of being, as far as they were concerned, it was ridiculous, but it was very good to put

01:43 a window on that.

01:45 He didn't airbrush that out.
