تعد القاهرة هي المدينة الوحيدة التي أقيم لها أسوار ثلاثة على فترات تاريخية متعاقبة، ويعد باب
زويلة هو أحد بوابات أسوار القاهرة التي لم يتبق منها إلا باب النصر والفتوح شمالاً، ومنها باب زويلة والذي يقع بنهاية شارع المعز لدين الله من الجهة الجنوبية في مواجهة جامع الصالح طلائع، وقام بتشييد هذا الباب الوزير القائد الفاطمي "بدر الدين الجمالي في (485 هجرية ـ 1092 ميلادية)". وقد سمي باب زويلة بهذا الاسم نسبة إلى قبيلة زويلة إحدى قبائل البربر الوافدة من شمال افريقيا.
ويطلق عليه العامة "بوابة المتولي" ويكاد يجمع المؤرخون على أن السبب في تلك التسمية يرجع إلى متولي الحسبة الذي كان يجلس على هذا الباب حتى يحصّل الضرائب على كل ما يدخل ويخرج من القاهرة .
ويشتهر باب زويلة بكونه الباب الذي تم تعليق رؤوس رسل هولاكو قائد التتار عليه حينما أتوا مهددين للمصريين.
Bab Zuwila
Cairo is the only city for which three walls were erected over successive historical periods. Bab Zuwailah is one of the gates of the walls of Cairo, of which only Bab al-Nasr and al-Futuh remain in the north. Among them is Bab Zuwailah, which is located at the end of Al-Mu'izz Lidin Allah Street from the southern side. It was called Bab Zuwailah. This name is in reference to the Zuwaila tribe, one of the Berber tribes coming from North Africa.
The public calls it “the Mutawali Gate,” and historians almost unanimously agree that the reason for that name is due to the Mutawali of the Hisbah, who used to sit at this door to collect taxes on everything that entered and left Cairo.
Bab Zuwaila is famous for being the door on which the heads of the messengers of Hulagu, the leader of the Tatars, were hung when they came to threaten the Egyptians.
