Scott McTominay's brace sealed a much-needed victory for Manchester United and their under-fire manager Erik ten Hag against Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea. Wednesday's Old Trafford encounter pitted together a pair of Premier League giants going through growing pains as they seek to become contenders again.United were under extra pressure heading into the match following reports of player unhappiness with Ten Hag, whose side reacted with a spirited 2-1 victory. McTominay was the hero as the Dutchman's side deservedly overcame the Blues, whose manager Pochettino was considered his main rival for the United post when he was appointed. The homegrown midfielder's first goal came midway through a first half that began with Robert Sanchez saving a Bruno Fernandes penalty and ended with a fine leveller from former Manchester City midfielder Cole Palmer. McTominay put the hosts back ahead with a powerful header and Chelsea substitute Armando Broja saw a late header hit the post as United bounced back from Saturday's lifeless loss at Newcastle.

00:00 Just witnessed Chelsea losing again this season.
00:04 That's the 17th defeat as well in 2023.
00:06 So by my calculations, that's more than they've lost in 2022 and 2021 combined.
00:13 So a bad run for Chelsea in the league.
00:16 And again, a defeat is always, you know, one step forward, two steps back with Chelsea, isn't it, at the moment?
00:22 And again today, just started poor.
00:25 United should have had more than one goal, really.
00:30 Bruno Fernandes had a penalty save from Sanchez.
00:33 Good save, but you know, you should always stick the penalties away.
00:37 Loads of chances missed and then McTominay finally put one away.
00:40 One nil up. Cole Palmer pulls one back. Against the run of play, I'd say, Chelsea did have their moments,
00:47 but that was very much against the run of play.
00:49 I guess for every sort of one goal Chelsea could have scored today,
00:54 United could have scored two, maybe even three.
00:56 Really poor. The stats show that as well.
00:59 You know, United had the highest expected goals figure of any club this season,
01:05 except when Chelsea played nine-man Tottenham.
01:08 So that's a really poor stat for Chelsea in the Premier League.
01:11 Second half, United got back ahead.
01:14 McTominay had a far post. It was the least they deserved, really.
01:17 A lot more of the chances.
01:18 I don't think any Chelsea fan would say they deserved to win today.
01:21 And there was booze even at the final whistle. Pochettino's press conference, he was calm.
01:25 He didn't get angry at his team like he did at Newcastle.
01:28 But for me, I thought that was poor.
01:30 And, you know, we'll see how they do against Everton, but an unimpressive performance for me.
