Good morning!

Magandang umaga Chi and Audrey and good morning to all the viewers of Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:07
Okay, Doktora, we often hear about the disease of diabetes, but what is it?
00:12
What is the cause of this disease?

00:24
What is the cause of this disease?
00:26
Okay, Doktora, we often hear about the disease of diabetes, but what is the cause of this disease?
00:32
Well, diabetes is a condition where our blood has a high blood sugar level.
00:42
And because of this, we have a risk to develop several complications.
00:47
First of all, why do we have diabetes?
00:51
This is because our body cannot produce enough insulin
00:57
or because our body has a big barrier to the action of insulin, which we call insulin resistance.
01:04
And this will lead to very high levels of sugar in the blood.
01:09
Okay, Dok, what are the common symptoms of a person experiencing diabetes?
01:17
Well, if our blood sugar level is not high, we will not have any symptoms.
01:24
That is why it is sometimes long to be diagnosed.
01:27
However, if our blood sugar level is high, we will get diarrhea, we will sneeze a lot,
01:34
we will have undue thirst for water, and we feel so tired and weak.
01:40
What are the common risk factors of having diabetes?
01:47
One of the common risk factors is family history.
01:54
So if our parents have diabetes, especially if both parents are diabetic,
02:00
then we have almost a 50% chance to become diabetic.
02:04
If we are overweight, we don't exercise much, we have a sedentary lifestyle.
02:10
If we have prediabetes or gestational diabetes,
02:15
that is the increase of our blood sugar during pregnancy,
02:19
or our lifestyle is not good,
02:26
we eat a lot, we don't exercise, we don't exercise,
02:30
we become sun-heated.
02:34
Plus, our own race, African Americans, Asians,
02:38
we have an increased risk to develop diabetes.
02:42
Dok, how is it effective to treat diabetes?
02:49
What are the usual treatments?
02:53
First, we need to educate our patients about what diabetes is.
03:00
Because it is in their commitment to help themselves.
03:05
That's where it starts.
03:06
Second, we will teach them the right diet,
03:11
the right exercise, every day, as much as possible.
03:16
Regular consultations with their doctor.
03:20
Before we have the symptoms that I mentioned,
03:25
we need to be aware that we might have to consult,
03:30
especially if we have family history.
03:32
And then, we must be compliant with our treatment regimen.
03:38
We need to continue the treatment, not just cut and paste.
03:42
It's like maintenance.
03:44
Well, doctor, this is my personal question.
03:49
Is it possible to avoid diabetes?
03:51
Because you mentioned earlier that it is hereditary,
03:56
it's in our genes.
03:58
Is it possible to avoid it?
04:01
Of course, we can avoid it if we are aware that we have risk factors
04:08
to develop diabetes.
04:10
And if we live a very healthy lifestyle,
04:14
we can consult at that very first hint that we have diabetes.
04:21
That we might develop diabetes.
04:23
Consult and be compliant with your treatment regimen.
04:27
If we do these things, we can actually fight diabetes
04:32
and we can prevent the development of its complications.
04:36
Doctor, if you have a routine exercise,
04:41
how much percentage can you avoid it?
04:44
Our exercise should be effective.
04:51
We have to have at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every other day,
04:57
at least if not every day.
04:59
It has a big significance because it can help us manage diabetes very well.
05:05
But it's not just exercise.
05:07
We also have to eat properly and drink the right medicine.
05:12
It has a significant significance.
05:14
But all together, they have to work all together.
05:16
It cannot just be exercise alone.
05:19
Doctor, you mentioned earlier that sometimes diabetes has no symptoms.
05:23
So what about cases like this?
05:26
What if they are not treated?
05:27
What complications can this cause?
05:30
And where and who should people with diabetes consult?
05:36
I always tell my patients that the complications of diabetes are from head to toe.
05:43
We can have blisters,
05:46
we can have a heart attack or stroke,
05:49
we can develop kidney failure,
05:52
we can have a risk for amputation
05:55
because there is a decreased blood flow to the legs,
05:59
and there is poor wound healing.
06:02
We can have bruises on our bodies.
06:07
It can be very dry because of the skin of the diabetic patients.
06:11
What else? It can lead to death if not addressed properly.
06:16
Now, I advise that even if it's just in the health center,
06:21
we have primary care providers there.
06:24
And then we can visit internees, family doctors,
06:28
and then to the specialists like endocrinologists and diabetologists.
06:34
So, if you are getting old,
06:36
it's Christmas season, Doctor,
06:38
avoid rice and sugar.
06:41
They should be balanced.
06:42
Fruit cakes!
06:43
Fruit cakes!
06:44
It's really important to take care of ourselves
06:46
and to control our lifestyle.
06:49
Yes, I agree.
06:52
Thank you so much, Doctor, for taking the time for us this morning.
06:56
And for all the information you shared.
06:58
Thank you so much.
07:00
Thank you also for having me.
07:02
That's me.
