00:01 As a kid I was always enchanted by the magic of clothes.

00:04 My sister and I would live in dress-up boxes.

00:07 I'd watch my mum make all our dance costumes,

00:11 getting excited by the possibilities

00:15 Since then, I've become somewhat of a fashion icon.

00:20 Some may even say a little bit of a muse.

00:34 So I've put my hand up to rummage

00:36 through Australia's wardrobe

00:37 to uncover our most fascinating fashion history.

00:41 Like many people, I've developed a bit

00:43 of a love-hate relationship with my wardrobe

00:45 and the industry around it.

00:46 And I've wondered what sort of power fashion has over us.

00:51 Let's face it, when you think about what Australians wear,

00:54 the first image that springs to mind

00:56 isn't exactly high fashion.

00:58 But over time, we've built up a globally recognised,

01:02 multi-billion dollar industry,

01:04 and one we should all be super proud of.

01:06 But we can't deny that this industry

01:09 has also made us feel too fat, too skinny,

01:12 too tall, too poor.

01:13 Like there's just so many ways

01:15 that we're not good enough for our clothes.

01:17 - I got tired of skinny little sales girls saying,

01:19 "I've nothing in your size,"

01:21 which makes you feel enormous.

01:22 And you walk out of the shop

01:24 with the greatest psychological hangup you can imagine.

01:26 Why is it that fashion can run so deep into our psyche?

01:33 why do you think it's so often considered as shallow?

01:38 And for Australia, it might just be the most intimate

01:41 and underestimated insight into how the country has evolved.
