00:00 - All right, well first of all, Leo, Lily, congratulations.
00:02 This film is beautiful.
00:04 I do not say it lightly when I say a cinematic masterpiece.
00:08 It also tells an American tragedy in certain ways.
00:13 What was the most important truth for you each to convey
00:17 or that you hoped the film conveyed
00:19 about the Osage Nation specifically?
00:22 - I think for me that they're still here.
00:25 That in spite of this, in spite of the reign of terror,
00:30 and then even though the reign of terror
00:33 is specific to Osage, it's also part of a whole period
00:36 of time where we have the assimilation era
00:39 following the removal era for American Indians.
00:42 Like every big step this nation has taken
00:47 has been a step closer to our erasure,
00:51 and yet we're still here.
00:52 And I feel like that was, for me,
00:55 one of the most important things
00:57 that I hope came across to the audience
00:59 since people tend to relegate us to the 1800s
01:02 and feel like we kind of went away then.
01:04 We continue, we remain, we're here.
01:07 - Absolutely.
01:08 Leo, what would you add to that
01:09 if you sort of zoom out the story,
01:12 start to finish, in a more general way?
01:14 - I think more than anything,
01:15 just to do this story justice.
01:18 You know, as Lily was saying,
01:20 this is a lost part of American history,
01:22 but it's a story that continues to this day
01:25 with indigenous cultures around the world.
01:28 It's a microcosm for a much larger narrative
01:32 that we see everywhere.
01:33 And we really went in as historians
01:36 trying to really listen.
01:38 Marty was so vigilant about listening
01:41 to the Osage community, about their perspective
01:44 on how to tell this story.
01:46 It's kind of an honor to be able
01:49 to put this up on screen,
01:51 'cause as soon as that book came out by David Grenn,
01:54 it's just such a shocking story.
01:56 Much like the Tulsa Massacre,
01:58 which happened the same year as this,
02:01 we were privileged enough to be able to try to go in
02:04 and be as truthful as possible
02:07 about not only what happened,
02:09 but the essence of who these characters were
02:12 and the dynamics of this story.
02:14 So I just felt privileged to be able to be a part of it.
02:18 And I feel so immensely proud of this moment.
02:21 - Absolutely.
02:22 Now the dynamic that the two of you create together
02:24 with your characters, it's beautiful, it's complex,
02:27 it's a lot of things.
02:30 I'm curious to know what was it like teaming up
02:32 to create that dynamic,
02:34 your first impressions of one another
02:36 when you first got to set?
02:37 Who's going first?
02:41 (laughing)
02:42 - I mean, we had a couple of dinners beforehand,
02:45 which I really appreciated
02:46 because then I got to just get to know the Leo
02:49 within the Leonardo DiCaprio of it all.
02:51 - I like that, the Leo and Leonardo.
02:53 - So by the time we got to set,
02:55 that even though our first scene,
02:57 my hands were trembling horribly.
02:59 - Little nervous?
03:01 - Oh, absolutely.
03:03 I mean, a lot of times that happens first day anyway,
03:05 just like the characters arriving and you're receiving,
03:09 so there's an energy there.
03:11 But also just, you know, had to kind of block out that
03:15 and just, I don't know,
03:16 I feel like we're pretty easy with each other
03:18 when it happens.
03:19 - I'd say so.
03:19 - Yeah?
03:20 (laughing)
03:21 Do you feel like Lily got to know the Leo
03:22 and the Leonardo?
03:23 (laughing)
03:25 - I do.
03:25 I do.
03:28 And vice versa.
03:29 But you know, more than anything,
03:30 it was as soon as she came on,
03:32 she just took this,
03:33 Marty looked at her as a,
03:35 he wanted her in a sort of leadership position
03:37 and a collaborator to really help us steer
03:41 how to tell this story correctly.
03:43 And she, not only did she embody the spirit
03:46 and the soul of this character,
03:47 but she really helped us with the narrative
03:50 of what we wanted to say.
03:51 So it was like, it was a equal partnership
03:54 in a lot of ways.
03:55 And Marty hired her immediately,
03:58 even without an audition,
04:00 which I had never seen in the history of my work with him.
04:03 He just knew that she needed to be a part of this project.
04:06 - That you were the one.
04:07 - And thank God he did.
04:09 - Without an audition with you,
04:10 I did read from Marty.
04:11 (laughing)
04:12 - Really?
04:13 - Yeah, a week before he set up that meeting with you
04:15 and me and him.
04:16 - No news to me.
04:17 - But you and I never, yeah,
04:18 we never had any text together beforehand.
04:20 I think our first sit down was essentially our chem read.
04:24 - But that was clearly enough.
04:27 - I was surprised because I was waiting to hear,
04:30 'cause you were filming "Don't Look Up" then
04:31 and said you wanted to dive in and do some scenes.
04:34 And I had my sides next to me the whole time
04:36 we had that first meeting, just in case.
04:38 And I was anticipating the next call I would get
04:41 if I got one would be for that read.
04:44 So when I got a call from both my agent and manager,
04:46 I was like, oh, this is news,
04:47 'cause they usually call if it's big news together.
04:50 They gave me the part and I was like,
04:53 wait, no, no, we've got one more step.
04:55 It's another note.
04:56 - It's yours.
04:57 - I don't know the leader with a Leonardo yet.
04:58 - Yeah, exactly.
04:59 I threw the phone across the room, I screamed.
05:02 And fun fact, that was on December 1st.
05:04 Nobody planned it this way,
05:05 but December 1st is Molly Burkhardt's birthday.
05:08 - Wow.
05:09 - Absolutely fascinating.
05:11 - So right away I had the excitement,
05:13 but then it was like, oh, that's a good reminder
05:16 of what I'm actually here to do.
05:18 - And you two sharing your first Vogue cover together.
05:22 How special to be able to do that for the first time, one,
05:26 and also promoting such an important project.
05:29 - Absolutely.
05:30 It was an amazing experience.
05:31 - Yes, it was.
05:34 And it meant so much, so much
05:36 to all of the indigenous designers that were featured.
05:39 Every single photo had indigenous design in it.
05:43 So yeah, that was a nice moment for a lot of celebration.
05:48 People were so happy to see you
05:50 with that pocket square next to those blankets.
05:53 It's like, you know.
05:54 - The turtlenecks looked great.
05:55 They looked really good.
05:55 (laughing)
05:56 - Yeah, turtlenecks worked for us.
05:59 - You big on turtlenecks, Leonardo?
06:01 - Am I big on turtlenecks?
06:02 Not really.
06:03 - No, you don't like those?
06:04 - Roll necks, roll necks.
06:05 - I didn't wear one on my first date, a turtleneck.
06:07 - Okay, how did it go?
06:09 Well.
06:09 - I don't think I've worn many turtlenecks.
06:11 - Hadn't worn one since.
06:12 - And that was from Mervin's.
06:14 (laughing)
06:16 - Well, you looked good in these ones, okay?
06:17 Congratulations on the film.
06:19 Thank you for your time.
