00:00 Here's one for all the titos and the titas of Manila.
00:03 Get ready to party like it is the 80s with a concert taking place this weekend.
00:09 It's called New Wave Invasion.
00:11 To tell us more, we have on the final word, Steve Kilby, lead singer and bassist of The
00:16 Church and Frank Kearns, founder and guitarist of Cactus World News.
00:23 Steve, Frank.
00:25 Yeah!
00:26 Welcome to the Philippines.
00:28 Thank you.
00:29 It's natural to be in Cactus World News to be in CNN.
00:33 Yes, absolutely.
00:35 And how are you finding it so far, your first two or three days here in the country?
00:40 People are very friendly.
00:42 They speak really good English.
00:44 They're very helpful.
00:46 It's very hot outside and very cold inside, like in your waiting room.
00:50 Freezing cold.
00:53 But you will feel the love and all the heat of Filipino New Wave fans this coming Saturday.
00:59 Yeah, we've met loads of people so far.
01:01 We've been signing albums and talking to people.
01:05 People have come up to me and said, you know, I wrote to you 10 years ago.
01:08 Oh my goodness.
01:09 Did you receive their notes?
01:11 Yeah.
01:12 Did you receive their snail mail?
01:13 Yeah.
01:14 Yeah, we did.
01:15 We had them all in letters and stuff, but we didn't know.
01:18 We had no idea.
01:19 So Steve, tell me, what makes New Wave music of the 80s still so relevant in this generation?
01:28 I don't know.
01:31 I can't answer that question.
01:34 I don't really like the 80s much.
01:36 I still like the 60s and 70s, but I was stuck with the 80s because I was too young for the
01:41 60s and 70s.
01:42 But did you have any influence in the music of the church in the 80s, the 60s and the
01:48 70s?
01:49 Yeah, the church is the Beatles and Bowie and Bob Dylan and T-Rex.
01:55 So that's what I brought into the church.
01:57 All the things I really like.
01:58 But I don't really like the 80s much.
02:00 You brought the Paisley shirts.
02:03 That's why we had Paisley shirts, because we're from the 60s.
02:08 I didn't like the look of the 80s.
02:10 Remember those haircuts?
02:11 Yeah.
02:12 All those guys dancing like that.
02:13 What's wrong with those haircuts?
02:15 Did you have one of those?
02:16 I had a great mullet.
02:17 I had a brilliant mullet.
02:18 What about you, Frank?
02:19 What about you, Frank?
02:20 Did you love the 80s?
02:21 Yes.
02:22 Yes.
02:23 The 80s, too.
02:24 Don't mind.
02:25 I won't mind him.
02:26 I won't mind.
02:27 What do you love?
02:28 And what was the major influence of Cactus World News?
02:33 I think when we were growing up in Ireland, we had Thin Lizzy.
02:38 We had U2, obviously.
02:39 And we had a lot of bands mixed in together with different kind of cultures.
02:47 We had Irish music as well.
02:51 Was that you?
02:52 No, that was him.
02:53 That's you today.
02:54 No, no, no.
02:55 That's you today.
02:56 That's you in the 80s.
02:57 There he is.
02:58 There he is.
02:59 Look at that hair.
03:00 Look at the hair on that.
03:01 That was a great day.
03:03 That was kind of an Irish live aid back in 1986.
03:08 And tell me, Steve, the church's big hits in the 80s were Unguarded Moment and Under
03:14 the Milky Way.
03:16 What were the inspirations of those two songs?
03:21 I don't really know.
03:22 No, I just sit down with a guitar and just write some words.
03:28 I don't know.
03:29 I don't know where it all comes from.
03:30 I've never tried to make it anything.
03:32 I just sort of like whatever would come, would come.
03:35 But remember, I've written thousands and thousands of songs.
03:39 So it's strange for me that people keep talking about-
03:41 Going back.
03:42 Yeah, to those ones.
03:43 Unguarded Moment and Under the Milky Way.
03:44 Up until today, Filipinos love those two songs.
03:48 Look, I keep meeting Filipino guys in America.
03:53 They're at all our shows and they go, "Oh, everybody in the Philippines loves the 80s."
03:58 And that's what we love.
03:59 And I'm like, "What happened to the 90s and the 2000s?"
04:03 You know what?
04:04 I'm one of those guys who was stuck in the 80s.
04:07 I have not outgrown 80s music.
04:10 And I just continue to listen to 80s music until today.
04:13 So for you, Frank, Cactus World News, the big hits, Worlds Apart.
04:17 Years later, The Bridge.
04:19 Yes.
04:20 Inspiration behind these three big hits.
04:22 Well, if you listen to those songs, when I listen back to them now, they seem really
04:28 fast.
04:29 There's like an energy of trying to escape our situation.
04:32 Because when we grew up in Ireland, it was kind of like black and white, and then it
04:37 became color when we got into a band, basically.
04:40 It was just an escape.
04:42 And it's kind of like liberation, rock and roll liberation.
04:46 And you mentioned, Steve, that you have written thousands of songs.
04:50 Thousands of songs.
04:51 Thousands of songs.
04:52 Thousands.
04:53 So up until today, you're writing songs and recording songs.
04:57 Yeah.
04:58 I just did a tour of America.
05:00 We've got a brand new album out.
05:02 Yeah, I'm writing all the time.
05:04 All the time.
05:05 And where do you get your inspiration?
05:09 And do you think that the bands and musicians of today are still influenced by the music
05:17 of the 80s?
05:18 I think so, yeah.
05:20 I think, yeah.
05:21 You can hear it.
05:22 Definitely.
05:23 You can hear it.
05:24 Yeah.
05:25 Where can you hear it, Frank?
05:26 You can hear it with young bands, in particular.
05:29 Are they the British bands?
05:30 Are they the American bands?
05:32 Irish, British, Australian.
05:34 When I work with young people a lot, and when they listen to music, they don't have any
05:38 kind of filter.
05:40 They just listen to the music.
05:42 When it moves them, they don't care where it's come from.
05:46 If it's a great piece of music, they absolutely love it.
05:50 I suppose in the past, where I came from, in the 70s with punk rock, we had these kind
05:55 of silos.
05:58 We just listened to only that type of music.
06:01 And for you, Steve, when young musicians, the Gen Zs and the millennials come up to
06:06 you and ask you, "What advice can you give us in terms of making music?"
06:12 They never want to hear it.
06:13 I always go, the same old stuff people said to me, "Practice."
06:18 What can I do?
06:19 "Practice."
06:20 They say, "No, no, it must be something else."
06:21 "Practice."
06:22 That's all there is.
06:23 Just keep on doing it.
06:24 Just keep on practicing.
06:25 And come up with your own type of music.
06:28 Do your own thing, yeah.
06:31 Like your music, your songs, have they evolved since the 80s?
06:37 What has changed in your music from the 80s to today?
06:41 I'm trying to keep a continuity going.
06:44 So it's a sort of contradiction.
06:46 I want to be the way I was when I started, but I want to be better than that.
06:51 So somebody who hears our first record would still hear our latest records 43 years later
06:56 and could see that it's still the same train of thought.
07:00 And what about for you, Frank?
07:01 Yeah, myself and Steve have done a collaboration, Speed of the Stars.
07:05 So the collaboration's been really good because we've kind of been able to complement each
07:10 other's talents and views.
07:14 It's been really good.
07:15 The album's brilliant.
07:16 We just made one in Italy there this year.
07:18 It's really good.
07:19 Okay, collaboration, working together, working with other bands.
07:26 New Wave Invasion taking place this coming weekend.
07:29 Yeah.
07:30 What can Filipino New Wave enthusiasts and fans expect from The Church and Steve Kilby?
07:38 Okay, I'll tell you one thing.
07:41 The Filipino drummer we've got, he's amazing.
07:44 We just played with him today, Paolo.
07:46 Jet, he's a Filipino on guitar.
07:48 He's amazing.
07:49 I think we're just going to...
07:51 We're going to jam.
07:52 Yeah.
07:53 We're going to jam.
07:54 Yeah.
07:55 So what do you like from what you've observed about Filipino musicians?
08:00 Passion.
08:01 Passion.
08:02 Yeah.
08:03 And honesty, trustworthiness, and openness.
08:07 It's just no agenda.
08:09 It's just like, "We're here to do the music.
08:11 Let's do it."
08:12 And they know your music.
08:14 Yeah.
08:15 They know your music from the '80s.
08:17 A lot of millennials and Gen Zs also have picked up New Wave songs.
08:24 And it has been revived over and over again.
08:27 It lives on.
08:29 Well, this is going to be a special show because both of the shows are going to be special
08:33 because we're going to completely work with new people and have a different perspective
08:42 on the songs when working through them.
08:44 We're going to make a few different changes.
08:46 That's going to make the event a special event.
08:49 I don't have to tell our viewers the songs that you're going to sing,
08:52 but can you at least tell them which songs of Cactus World News will be sung this coming Saturday?
08:58 If I was into Cactus World News, I'd want to hear "Worlds Apart," "The Bridge," "Years Later," "The Promise."
09:09 I want to hear those songs, and I can guarantee you're going to hear those songs.
09:13 What about from the church, Steve?
09:14 All the hits.
09:15 Okay.
09:16 All the hits.
09:17 What are these hits?
09:18 Our Filipino viewers want to hear them straight from Steve.
09:21 Should you really tell?
09:22 It's like someone telling the end of a story.
09:25 You're going to hear all the hits.
09:26 I promise that.
09:27 "Unguarded Moment."
09:28 Yes.
09:29 "Under the Milky Way."
09:30 Yes.
09:31 "Reptile."
09:32 Definitely.
09:33 "Reptile."
09:34 Yeah.
09:35 Okay.
09:36 All right.
09:37 So please.
09:38 So why not be playing guitar with Steve as well?
09:39 He's playing with me.
09:40 And of course, also in that concert, "Lotus Eaters" and "Flock of Seagulls."
09:45 "Flock of Seagulls."
09:46 "Lotus Eaters" and "Flock of Seagulls" will be here tomorrow on the show.
09:49 So please invite our Filipino New Wave fans to your concert this coming weekend.
09:55 Well, do you want to...
09:57 Now you do it.
09:58 Well, we'd like to invite you to a special show in the Illinois...
10:03 A keynote.
10:04 ...Keynote Stadium, and it's on Saturday.
10:07 And the wonderful DMC promotions are promoted, so it's going to be rocking.
10:12 Jesse Cambose is here, the producer.
10:13 Jesse's here.
10:14 Great.
10:15 And then in Angeles the following day, in the casino, we have another show coming on,
10:22 which is going to be brilliant.
10:24 So to have two shows in the Philippines, absolutely fantastic.
10:27 And we can expect all the big hits.
10:29 All the big hits.
10:30 All of them.
10:31 All the big hits.
10:32 Yeah, all of them.
10:33 So the venue will be rocking with New Wave music.
10:35 Wow, you really got the lingo, haven't you?
10:39 Well, gentlemen, thank you so much.
10:41 Thanks for having us on.
10:42 Thank you.
10:43 For joining us on "The Final Word."
10:44 Thank you.
10:45 Steve Kilby from the church, and Frank Kearns from Cactus World News.
10:50 And you know some Tagalog words, right, Steve?
10:53 Well, we've got...
10:55 [laughter]
10:56 Mahay Filipino.
10:58 [laughter]
10:59 Okay, I'm sure you will know them...
11:01 We will know the words.
11:02 ...during your performance.
11:03 Yes, we will.
