Recently deepfake videos of Bollywood actresses Rashmika Mandana, Katrina Kaif and Kajol went viral all over the internet. Rashmika shared how scared and hurt she felt after her forged video went viral. Actor Amitabh Bachan and even PM Modi spoke about this dark side of Artificial Intelligence. Let’s understand what deepfake videos are.
Deepfake videos are artificial, computer-generated videos made using digital softwares and face swapping techniques. Such videos are made by combining photographs and videos from unrelated events and used to depict events that never actually happened. Generative adversarial network or GAN is a machine learning technique widely used to create deepfakes. The basic technology behind deepfakes is facial recognition. It works on principles similar to that used for Snapchat filters. Even though the technology used to create deepfakes is relatively new, the videos produced look very real and it can be very difficult to tell deepfakes apart from real videos.
