Snow to snarl post-Thanksgiving travel in Rockies, Plains

A strengthening storm will spread accumulating snow across nearly a dozen states from Thursday into Saturday, including in Denver.

00:00 Well, here comes the snow first across the Rockies, then across the Plains, and before

00:05 the end of the weekend, across the Midwest, including cities like Chicago.

00:09 All right, here comes the cold air.

00:11 This is going to be a big deal as we move forward here.

00:13 Colder air coming southward on Thanksgiving.

00:16 That will continue to move to the south as we get into Friday and Saturday.

00:21 Big temperature drops.

00:22 We're going to see them 20 to 40 degrees.

00:24 Take a look at Denver, near 70 this afternoon, in the 30s most of tomorrow, then in the 20s

00:32 both Friday and Saturday, and then temperatures come back up a little bit as we head into

00:36 Sunday.

00:37 But what a difference in the next 24 hours.

00:39 We're tracking this too.

00:41 Here's our next storm.

00:45 This is going to come southward.

00:48 Look at the yellows, reds, and oranges showing you the energy, and then a big dip in the

00:52 jet stream as we get into tomorrow across the northwest.

00:56 This is going to continue to move eastward.

00:58 The upper level low goes along and just north, I think, of Interstate 80 in parts of Nevada

01:04 and Utah.

01:05 Rule of thumb is, north of the low, that's where you get the heaviest amounts of snow.

01:09 That's going to be across Wyoming, we think, at least in the lower elevations here.

01:13 From Casper towards Cheyenne, along Interstate 25, this is going to become snow-covered and

01:18 treacherous.

01:19 Thursday afternoon, Thursday night, same thing in Denver, about 2 to 4 inches in and

01:23 around Denver.

01:24 Heavy snow off to the north and also into the foothills here in the San Juan Mountains,

01:29 foothills of Denver, and into the mountains west of Denver, certainly the Tetons.

01:33 This is where we're looking at over a foot of snow with an accurate local storm, actually

01:37 24 inches.

01:38 Take note, the snow's streaking out in the plains.

01:40 A little bit of snow, an inch or two, around Wichita, around Kansas City.

01:44 As this storm continues to quickly move northeastward, we could see maybe a coating to an inch of

01:49 snow across cities like Peoria, Chicago, Kalamazoo, even Detroit as we move into our Saturday

01:56 night and into Sunday morning.

01:59 Now, really quickly, we want to give you a heads up, our long-range forecasting department

02:04 always looking ahead.

02:06 Let's keep an eye on mid to late next week.

02:08 One of the big stories we're going to see is this, a lot of cold air coming on south

02:12 from the Midwest in toward the northeast.

02:14 Now we do think there's going to be a storm coming out of Texas.

02:17 We're not exactly sure the strength of the track, but I think there's two possibilities.

02:21 More of a southern track, and I think this is most likely.

02:24 If the southern track is indeed correct, then it doesn't really hook up with the cold air

02:29 and we're not looking at any snow.

02:31 But if this storm can find its way northward, then we could be looking at at least some

02:35 snow across parts of the Ohio Valley and southwest Ontario.

02:39 Of the two storm tracks, though, we think this is most likely the southern track.

02:44 That means it's cold and dry midwest-northeast.

02:47 We'll keep an eye on it for mid to late next week.
