00:00 Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Tuesday said that his militant group was nearing a truce
00:08 agreement with Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
00:11 This comes as negotiators are working to secure a deal between the two sides amid the mounting
00:16 death toll and deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave.
00:21 Haniyeh's statement comes even as the deadly assault in Gaza continued and rockets were
00:25 being fired into Israel.
00:27 Negotiators have been working to seal a deal to allow the release of around 240 mostly
00:31 Israeli hostages seized on October 7 during the deadliest assault on Israel in its history.
00:37 In a post on Telegram, Haniyeh said, "We are close to reaching a deal on a truce."
00:42 According to reports, citing two sources familiar with the talks, said the tentative deal includes
00:47 a five-day truce consisting of a ceasefire on the ground and limits to Israeli air operations
00:52 over southern Gaza.
00:54 The deal also includes the return of between 50 and 100 hostages, Israeli civilians and
00:59 captives of other nationalities but not military personnel, held by Hamas and Islamic Jihad,
01:04 a separate Palestinian militant group.
01:07 If agreed upon, some 300 Palestinians would also be released from Israeli jails, among
01:11 them women and children.
01:13 According to media reports, intense negotiations are underway in Qatar, which is also home
01:17 to Hamas' political office, where Haniyeh is based.
01:20 Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden on Monday said that he believes that a deal to free
01:24 some of the hostages in exchange for a ceasefire is close.
01:28 "I believe so," said Biden when asked whether a deal was near during a Thanksgiving ceremony
01:33 at the White House and went on to cross his fingers to signal he hoped for good luck.
01:38 Separately, the Hamas leaders also met with Mirjana Spoljarek, president of the International
01:43 Committee of the Red Cross in Qatar on Monday, to advance humanitarian issues related to
01:48 the security conflict, the Geneva-based ICRC said in a statement.
01:52 Last week, Qatari mediators were seeking a deal for Hamas and Israel to exchange 50 hostages
01:57 in return for a three-day ceasefire that would boost emergency aid shipments to Gaza's civilians,
02:02 according to the reports.
02:03 Hamas' raid on October 7, the deadliest day in Israel's 75-year-old history, prompted
02:08 Israel to invade the Palestinian territory to target Hamas.
02:11 Since then, Gaza's Hamas-run government said at least 13,300 Palestinians have been
02:17 killed, including at least 5,600 children and 3,550 women, by unrelenting Israeli bombardment.
02:24 Hamas said on its Telegram account on Monday that it had launched a barrage of missiles
02:28 towards Tel Aviv.
02:29 Witnesses also reported rockets being fired at central Israel.
