Graham Sullivan from Barclays speaks to Tom Curphey about the company winning the Employer of the Year award at the 2023 Media Isle of Man Awards for Excellence

00:00 So I'm here with Graham Sullivan who's won the Paragon Employer of the Year.

00:06 So Barclays Island celebrated centenary year in 2022 and now you're celebrating

00:11 something else. Tell me a bit about your company.

00:14 Well listen we're one of the largest employers on the island I think we're

00:17 the largest financial institution on the island and listen for me we've got the

00:22 very best people so it's an honour to win this award but I think the fact that

00:28 you look after your colleagues, you look after your clients is the recipe for

00:31 success so this is for all of our I think it's nearly 400 people that we've

00:37 got on the platform who deserve this.

00:40 So you say nearly 400 people, one of the biggest

00:43 island's largest, one of the island's largest employers. How hard is it to keep

00:47 staff happy do you think?

00:48 Well I think we do our very best. We're very fortunate to have a

00:53 brilliant team. We put our colleagues at the heart of everything we do and then

00:58 I think Switchwood, they're very happy with us but you know the war on talent

01:03 out there is extreme right. There's a lot of competitors in the same

01:07 industry, there's a lot of transferable skills that are desirable in the market

01:11 but we've got the very best people and we're very lucky to have them.

01:14 And you say about, so you've won the Employer of the Year, how important is workplace environment for you and not just you but

01:20 just in general across the island how important is it to have to keep people happy?

01:24 Oh it's massive. Look I said it over there, I think I've worked, I've been very fortunate to work in many

01:29 jurisdictions globally in my career. I've worked in the Middle East, I've worked in

01:33 Europe, I've worked in the UK but the Isle of Man for me is where it's at. So for us to win this

01:38 award in Switchwood company is massive right and it shows we're doing something

01:43 right. So when I joined the organisation back here in the Isle of Man we

01:47 started a strategy to make the Barclays the very best place to work in the Isle

01:51 of Man and internally we're getting some good recognition for that and it's great

01:55 to see that external validation as well. It shows we're doing something right but

01:58 this is just the start. Well congratulations to you and congratulations to the rest of Barclays.
