00:13 I'm thrilled to welcome Daniel Craig to our studio today.

00:16 Multi-talented actor, stage and screen.

00:18 Most recently, you've seen him in Glass Onion.

00:21 - This crown clashed with the presence of Benoit Blanc.

00:25 - And he's brought along some of his watches.

00:28 (upbeat music)

00:31 - It's interesting that you've got Speedmaster

00:40 because obviously in your role as Bond,

00:42 it's much more known for the Seamaster.

00:45 - Yes.

00:46 - What is it about the Speedmaster that attracted you?

00:47 - Well, the moon thing, one.

00:49 I mean, just kind of the idea that this watch was designed.

00:52 The fact that it's, you know, you have to wind it.

00:54 It's sort of kind of has a,

00:55 it's sort of very mechanical and functional.

00:57 - And the winding thing,

00:58 you kind of have more of a relationship with it

01:00 when you have to wind it every day.

01:00 - Exactly, it's a really good thing to say.

01:02 You have a relationship with it.

01:03 I'd say that's exactly right.

01:04 - Although mine's clearly dysfunctional

01:06 'cause I forgot to wind it this morning.

01:07 - Well, that's another thing, that's a relationship.

01:09 I mean, it's right there, you know.

01:11 - How did you get started in watches in the first place?

01:13 - My father bought me a watch for my 18th birthday,

01:17 which was a vintage Amiga.

01:20 It was very beautiful and I wore it to death.

01:22 And unfortunately, I wore it so often

01:24 that one of the arms broke

01:26 and I lost it on the Wurlitzers in a fair,

01:28 which is stupid of me to be wearing a vintage Amiga

01:31 on the Wurlitzers, but that's it went.

01:33 - This is from Casino Royale.

01:35 - It's the watch I wore in Casino Royale.

01:37 - Which was in the very first clip,

01:39 which is the crane and the parkour.

01:41 - Exactly. - And the plane crashing.

01:42 - I think there were maybe,

01:43 I think it was probably about three of these.

01:46 And stunt guys wore them and I had this one.

01:50 And I'm sad to say, but it still had red clay on it

01:54 up until it's just gone.

01:56 - From that stuff? - I'd never cleaned it

01:58 from that set.

01:59 - And it's engraved from Michael G. Wilson

02:02 and Barbara Broccoli.

02:03 - They gave it to me afterwards and they kind of came

02:06 and so it's very, very precious to me.

02:08 But I never wear it.

02:09 I mean, it just fits too much.

02:11 - It's special, right?

02:12 And I read Barbara started working for her father,

02:15 Kirby, when she was 17 in the press department.

02:17 So she knows Bond just as well as anyone.

02:20 Did she guide you?

02:22 I know she approached you, right, for the role.

02:24 Is that right?

02:25 - Oh yeah.

02:26 I'd met Barbara, sadly, at Meet Your Friend,

02:29 Mary Selway, who was a casting director.

02:31 And Barbara had organized this wonderful kind of

02:34 sending off for Mary.

02:35 And we met there and she said,

02:36 "Will you come and have a cup of tea with me?"

02:38 I was like, "Okay."

02:40 And was that code for something?

02:41 Whatever it was.

02:42 And she said, "We want to keep you in this role."

02:46 Well, I went and laughed and it gets sort of, yeah.

02:50 I mean, but there we are.

02:52 - Yeah. - Yeah.

02:53 - This one's really intriguing.

02:55 And it sent me down the rabbit hole last night

02:57 at about 10.30.

02:59 It's a mid to late '60s Seamaster 300 diver.

03:05 But I don't think I've seen very many

03:06 which actually have the old script on it.

03:08 I may be wrong, but I think that's much rarer

03:10 than the ones that came in the late '60s.

03:12 - I hope you're right.

03:12 - How did you come by it?

03:14 - So I was in Budapest and I was filming Munich.

03:19 I'd already had the meeting with Barbara.

03:21 There wasn't an offer on the table,

03:22 but it was sort of like it was getting very close

03:24 to crunch time about whether or not

03:27 I was gonna kind of get involved.

03:28 And I saw it in the window of a shop in Budapest

03:31 and it was in a real state.

03:33 And in fact, if you look, I mean, you can see it there,

03:35 but there's sort of damage on the loom.

03:39 - On the loom. - Yeah.

03:40 - And it was sort of working

03:42 and I got totally taken to the clean.

03:44 - All right, now this one's a nice one.

03:46 This is the coaxial, master coaxial chronometer

03:51 from Spectre. - Yeah.

03:53 So what's nice about this one is, you can see,

03:57 this is not for sale, which means it's a prototype.

04:01 And I was a bit scared about bringing this one in today

04:05 'cause I thought they might ask for it back.

04:07 (laughing)

04:08 They may still do so.

04:10 - Cut that bit.

04:11 - I've got the lollipop version of that one as well,

04:14 which I was gonna bring in,

04:15 but I just thought that was much nicer

04:16 'cause I probably shouldn't own it.

04:19 - This one, I didn't even know this existed

04:22 until I saw a picture of this yesterday.

04:24 It's the Mammomatic.

04:26 Tell me about that.

04:27 - I love this sort of period

04:29 when, you know, that's television series, Space 1999.

04:32 They're sort of futuristic watches.

04:34 But what really appealed to me,

04:37 but this has got an alarm on it.

04:39 I had a watch years ago, I don't know what make it was.

04:41 It certainly wasn't an Amiga.

04:43 And it had an alarm on it

04:44 and that's how I used to get up in the morning.

04:45 I used to set it, put it by the bed and it would go.

04:47 But it would then go on my wrist

04:49 and I just thought that was the best.

04:50 - It's a little tinny mechanical alarm,

04:51 but it's actually quite pleasant.

04:53 - And it's just, I mean, kind of looks cool.

04:56 - Yeah.

04:57 - That's what I quite liked about it.

04:59 - This is from about '70s to '71s.

05:01 - Is that right?

05:02 It is about, yeah.

05:03 But again, it's that kind of,

05:04 that sort of sci-fi kind of thing.

05:08 And they put this rather chunky, but rather nice.

05:11 - I think a lot of it,

05:12 that design was in sort of follow up to the moon landings.

05:15 Everyone went space mad.

05:16 Oh, back on the moon.

05:17 - Yeah, again, that's.

05:18 - It's just the 40th anniversary of moon landing from 2009.

05:21 - Yeah, and that just, again,

05:23 that's just a tie into, you know,

05:26 that's the kind of the basic moon watch.

05:28 And then when I got a bit more money, I got that one.

05:32 'Cause it was like, you know,

05:33 it's just the commercial one.

05:35 And again, that's a conceit from it,

05:36 'cause the state of it, I wear it all the time.

05:37 So it's again, all these watches,

05:39 I mean, I don't tend to wear that off very often,

05:41 but I do, I wear all of these watches.

05:43 - I'm sure there's some that you sort of keep under lock

05:45 and key, but you'd really like to wear them rather than.

05:48 - I mean, what's the point?

05:50 You can't hide things away.

05:51 It's like a kind of, it's a bit kind of hoarding things.

05:54 I just like, I've got to get,

05:55 put them on your wrist and wear them,

05:57 get the function out of them.

05:58 - Yeah, absolutely.

06:00 Now this one is interesting.

06:01 This is from the Jan Artus Bertrand's organization,

06:04 which is for like protecting the ocean.

06:06 - Right.

06:07 - Did you pick this up for a particular reason

06:10 to do with that operation,

06:13 or is it just something that came to you by chance?

06:14 - This is where this interview just goes down the pan,

06:17 because it's blue.

06:18 - It's a good reason as any.

06:20 - But it's also got, you know,

06:22 there's the orange ones that were around,

06:24 which I've never, I couldn't wear an orange one,

06:27 but this has the blue and it's got the orange picked out

06:29 on the side, and it's just,

06:30 I just think it's just a beautiful watch.

06:33 Just like, you know, and again,

06:34 I wear this one all the time as well.

06:35 You can tell it's covered in crap.

06:37 I did actually try to clean some of these,

06:39 and then I just thought, I'll just sort it.

06:40 I was there with my little.

06:42 - Toothbrush.

06:43 - Toothbrush, and cleaning it,

06:43 I'm like, oh God, that's what they did,

06:45 that's what, you know.

06:46 I'm gonna bring in this one now,

06:47 which actually we borrowed for the day,

06:49 which is your most recent Seamaster 300.

06:53 - Your watch.

06:54 - How strong is it?

06:55 - Fairly strong.

06:57 - This is titanium.

06:58 It's a really lovely watch,

06:59 because it's very retro,

07:00 and it's very modern at the same time.

07:02 I like the fact that they put the broad arrow

07:04 on the dial as well,

07:06 which has been a mark of ownership by the crown

07:10 or by the government.

07:11 Basically means this is not your watch.

07:13 You're going to give it back

07:13 when you finish your service or whatever it is.

07:16 Is this something that's a sort of a watch

07:18 that's out there that you have in the back of your mind

07:21 that you're still looking for,

07:22 or if it comes along,

07:23 you'll nab it, something in your head?

07:25 - I don't feel very comfortable wearing

07:27 the really expensive watches.

07:30 I've got a couple of really nice ones,

07:31 so for very special occasions, I wear them.

07:33 But on a day to day,

07:34 I want to wear a watch that feels like a,

07:36 you know, I feel comfortable having it on my wrist.

07:39 - Now, if under threat of being evaporated,

07:43 you had to keep one of these watches,

07:45 which one would you keep?

07:46 - I think, I mean, it's a toss up between those two

07:49 because that's, I bought that,

07:50 but I think it has to be the Casino Royale one.

07:52 It's like, it's kind of that,

07:54 that has a incredibly significant,

07:56 I mean, it's a moment my life changed basically.

07:58 So I think I'd have to sort of say that was the one.

08:01 - Do you think you might be able to find a replacement

08:03 for the one that flew off your wrist at the fairground?

08:05 - I did, I found one.

08:06 - You did? - Yeah, I did.

08:07 - And it's as close as you can get to it.

08:07 - I think it was, yeah, yeah, yeah.

08:09 - Marvellous. - Yeah.

08:10 - Well, Dalian, thank you very much for your time.

08:12 It's been very fascinating in there.

08:13 - Oh, thank you very much for having me.

08:14 - Very interesting collection.
