00:00 But freedom of speech and freedom of expression also comes with a certain responsibility.
00:04 External Affairs Minister S.J. Shankar asserted that India's purchase policies played a key
00:09 role in stabilizing the global oil and gas markets amid the Russia-Ukraine war, thereby
00:15 helping manage global inflation.
00:16 S.J. Shankar made the statements during a conversation with journalist Lionel Barber
00:21 titled "How a Billion People See the World in London."
00:42 S.J. Shankar said that India was a "big enough country" to command some respect in the markets,
01:05 but there were much smaller countries who didn't even get responses to their tender
01:21 in Paris.
01:22 S.J. Shankar emphasized India's strategic approach to oil purchases, which worked as
01:38 a crucial factor in preventing a potential spike in global oil prices.
01:42 Responding to a question on Canada's allegation of India's involvement in the killing of
01:47 Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, S.J. Shankar also said that India is not ruling
01:52 out a probe in the case, but asked Canada to share evidence to back its claims.
01:56 "The response to what Prime Minister Trudeau said is that we have told the Canadians, look,
02:18 Canadian politics has given space to violent and extreme political opinions which advocate
02:31 separatism from India, including through violent means.
02:36 And these people have been accommodated in Canadian politics.
02:40 They have given the freedom to articulate their views.
02:49 And not just that, it has come to a situation where the diplomats of my country, including
02:58 the High Commissioner, we've had attacks on the High Commission, smoke bombs thrown at
03:04 the High Commission.
03:05 My Consul General and other diplomats were intimidated in public, on record, with no
03:13 action taken by those who did this.
03:17 And this is a country where there were previous issues.
03:24 For those who would be familiar with Lockerbie, we had a much bigger incident when an Air
03:32 India plane, there were bombs put, in fact on two planes, one fortunately landed before
03:38 the bomb went off, but the other one, there were 327 people who died when the plane crashed
03:45 off Ireland.
03:46 So given all this, I think it is important that a country like Canada, I mean, we are
03:56 a democracy, we are a democracy, they are a democracy.
04:00 But freedom of speech and freedom of expression also comes with a certain responsibility.
04:04 And the misuse of those freedoms and the toleration of that misuse for political purposes would
04:11 be, to our mind, very wrong.
04:14 Now in the case of Mr. Trudeau, I have discussed it also with my own counterpart, I still do,
04:25 and we have told them, look, if you have a reason to make such an allegation, please
04:31 share the evidence with us.
04:33 We are not ruling out an investigation and looking at anything which they may have to
04:41 open.
