EU condemns Hamas for using people as human shields, but urges 'maximum restraint' from Israel

The European Union has condemned Hamas for using hospitals and civilians in them as shields, while at the same time urging Israel to show maximum restraint.

00:11 This is the double message of the 27 member states to both Hamas and Israel in view of

00:15 how the situation in Gaza`s hospitals is deteriorating.

00:21 We ask Israel to show maximum restraint in order to save civilian lives. We condemn the

00:30 use by Hamas of people at hospitals as shields, but also we express our concern for the dire

00:39 situation of the hospitals that are being heavily affected by the bombing.

00:45 Joseph Borre will go to the region to meet with leaders and discuss the situation. According

00:50 to Hamas, all hospitals in the north of Gaza are now out of service.

00:54 EU foreign affairs ministers gathered in Brussels on Monday to discuss the situation, who say

00:59 they are concerned.

01:00 We have to see what is happening in the hospitals in Gaza. They are not battlefields. We have

01:07 to listen, in my opinion, to the doctors on the border, the world`s health organization

01:14 that says that people, patients who are in intensive care have no chance. There is no

01:21 oxygen, no water, no medicine. So, these people are going to die.

01:38 But divisions remain at the European level. While officially Brussels is asking for humanitarian

01:42 pauses to let more aid into Gaza, some countries, including Spain and Belgium, are asking for

01:47 a ceasefire. But Germany does not want to go so far.

01:51 I totally understand the impulse in this terrible situation where innocent children, people,

01:59 women, mothers, families are suffering, but also dying. I understand the impulse for a

02:07 ceasefire. But impulses are not enough to help people, to really save lives.

02:12 The European Union says all civilians must be allowed to leave the combat zone in Gaza

02:19 and that any humanitarian pauses must happen immediately.
