Leonid meteor shower to kick off the weekend on Nov. 17-18

Celebrate the beginning of the weekend under the stars with the peak of the Leonid meteor shower on the night of Nov. 17-18. The shower is expected to peak with a rate of 15 meteors per hour.

00:02 This weekend, we'll kick off with the peak

00:07 of the Leonid meteor shower

00:09 on the night of November 17th and 18th.

00:13 The meteors appear to originate from the constellation Leo,

00:16 the lion looking east,

00:18 but you don't have to look in that direction.

00:20 The Leonids are known to occasionally produce meteor storms

00:23 of thousands of meteors per hour.

00:26 During these events,

00:27 it is said that Leo the lion is roaring.

00:30 The lion will not roar though this year

00:32 with peak rates of 15 meteors per hour.

00:35 Make sure you find a dark area away from city lights

00:38 and prepare to bundle up for a cold night.

00:41 Once you're at a dark area,

00:43 make sure to let your eyes adjust to the dark

00:45 for at least 30 minutes

00:47 and then sit back under the stars and enjoy.
