00:00 When you're creating content inside of Toon Boom Studio, you're going to be relying on
00:07 several different views.
00:09 Camera views and workspace views.
00:12 For example, if you look in this workspace list button, if I click, you'll see that we
00:17 have a default view and we have a drawing view and the drawing view pretty much expands
00:25 and just gives you the tools you need to focus on drawing.
00:28 We also have a full scene drawing view, which gets rid of everything except for the drawing
00:35 mode so you don't see the menus or anything.
00:38 But you'll notice that if I hover my mouse closer to the top, I can get to the menu bar,
00:44 which is really handy because sometimes you're like, "Hey, how do I get back to where I was?"
00:48 So go to the window menu, go to workspaces, and just simply choose a different view.
00:53 So I'll go back to drawing.
00:55 You can also go to the workspace list again and go to scene planning.
01:00 This is a different view where we can actually see our animation come together.
01:05 In this view, we have our timeline and we have our camera view so we can see our animations
01:09 when we scrub the playback head or the scrubber along the timeline.
01:15 Now as far as camera views, we have the side view and the top view over here on the right.
01:20 Let me go ahead and just get rid of these guys for now.
01:24 Now what we're looking at is actually from the point of view of the camera.
01:28 So you can have all kinds of lines here that represent your artwork.
01:32 So let's say you have a green line here or a different color line that represents the
01:35 background.
01:36 So this is your sky.
01:37 And you have something in front of it, which could be trees.
01:40 And you have the street.
01:41 And you have cars.
01:42 And you have people walking across.
01:44 And your camera is looking at all that so that the closer it is to the camera, the closer
01:50 it is to the audience.
01:51 And the further away it is in the view, the further away it is from our eye.
01:56 So that's why you want to arrange things that way.
01:58 Always put your furthest away element over here.
02:01 And likewise, we have the same thing in our top view.
02:04 So we can go ahead in our top view and I'm hitting, by the way, the Z key to zoom out.
02:10 And I can hit the X key to zoom in.
02:12 And all I have to do is click on one of these views to do that.
02:15 So Z or X to zoom in or out.
02:18 And this cone simply represents what the camera is looking at.
02:22 In this case, this is the side view.
02:25 And the camera is over here looking this way.
02:28 And here's the top view.
02:30 And the camera is here looking that way.
02:33 So don't think of it as looking up.
02:35 The camera is looking in space, like straight ahead and straight to the side.
02:41 And we'll talk more about how to use these guys later on.
02:44 But for now, you get the idea that we have working views and we also have camera views.
02:55 Whenever you launch Toon Boom Studio, you will be greeted by the welcome screen.
03:01 And you can do quite a bit in this window.
03:04 You can create a brand new project.
03:06 You can also format your project.
03:09 And Toon Boom Studio is smart enough to remember your last used size.
03:15 For example, I have most recent.
03:17 And the most recent size that I just worked on was indeed 853 by 480.
03:23 I can change my frame rate if I want to.
03:26 And the more frame rate you have, the higher quality of the media you're going to go to.
03:31 So I will be going to video or film.
03:34 If I'm doing things for the web, I might want to stick to something like 10 or 15 frames.
03:38 It depends on the quality you're going for.
03:42 Now I can also choose the default setting, web animation small and other sizes, iPod
03:50 and podcasting, Windows Mobile, and also standard sizes like NTSC, PAL, and high definition
04:00 TV and even film.
04:03 Typically NTSC is going to be in North America and Japan, PAL is going to be in Europe.
04:08 And when I choose one of these guys here, I'll see the dimensions.
04:11 So web animation small is 160 x 120 as far as my camera size.
04:17 Notice by the way that the frame rate also changed for me.
04:20 As I mentioned before, 15 frames or something like that for the web.
04:24 And Toon Boom said 12.
04:25 So I'm going to go back to my most recent.
04:30 I can also open any recent files that I worked on.
04:34 So I can go and choose it from the list.
04:36 And if I don't see them here, I can click browse and search for my hard drive.
04:41 I can also click create when I title something and create a new file based on these settings
04:47 here.
04:48 When I want to see what's going on on the forum, I can click this button down here.
04:52 I can get some more learning stuff from the e-learning section of the Toon Boom website.
04:59 I can check my account, which is really good if you want to find out what your downloads
05:02 are or anything that you have in your account that you want to change.
05:06 I can click here for free tutorials.
05:09 I can click here to see what's going on with the Toon Boom workout series, which is another
05:14 series of tutorials that they offer.
05:17 I can also go to the showcase or even submit my own animation.
05:23 Be sure to check out the showcase on the Toon Boom studio website.
05:26 It's really, really cool stuff.
05:28 And you can just really get inspired by all the animations created by other Toon Boom
05:32 users.
05:34 And I can also share my story.
05:37 You know, I woke up, had some coffee, I tripped over a pencil and I decided I want to animate
05:43 today.
05:44 That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
05:46 So this is the welcome screen.
05:49 So once again, you can do quite a bit here.
05:52 And I would suggest that you get very familiar with it because every time you launch the
05:55 application, this is going to be your first stop.
06:03 In this version of Toon Boom Studio, the interface has changed dramatically.
06:09 If you remember the older versions, we didn't have these nicely arranged little panels here.
06:15 They were all floating around.
06:18 But even though this version is much neater, you still might want to customize it even
06:22 further.
06:23 Now, as you can see here in my particular workspace, I have this tab, this tab, this
06:29 one, this one, and a whole bunch of things all over the place.
06:33 What if I want to go to the window menu under the workspaces category and I want to create
06:38 my own workspace.
06:40 For example, in Toon Boom Studio, we have a default view.
06:45 We have a drawing view.
06:47 We have a full screen view and a scene planning view.
06:51 And as you can see here, I can get there from this area or in this menu.
06:57 I have the ability to create my own custom ones.
07:00 So let me show you how to do that.
07:02 The first thing you need to do is to rearrange these guys to suit your needs.
07:08 So I'm going to grab the library tab, literally right here on this tab, and click and hold
07:13 my mouse down and tear this off.
07:17 As I move this around, you'll notice that the other pieces of the interface will actually
07:22 move out of the way.
07:24 So I can put it here or I can put it here or anywhere that the interface will allow
07:31 me to.
07:32 So you'll notice that if I put my mouse in the middle of another area, it turns gray.
07:41 So when I let go, I get a tab that will pop up here.
07:45 So let's go ahead and do that now.
07:47 I'll put it up here first and there it is.
07:49 It now lives in this same little group.
07:52 I'll tear this off again and instead of putting it in the center, I'll let it slide down and
07:58 when I let go of the mouse, it will dock and make its own new group.
08:02 So let me go ahead and do that again and now the panel lives up here.
08:08 So I can take these guys and I can consolidate them and I can really make my own consolidated
08:13 custom view.
08:14 I'll go ahead and put this one here and I'll take this and put it here as well and as you
08:19 can see, I have my own custom way of working.
08:24 So this might be great for you or it might not be.
08:27 But let's say it is.
08:29 We can now go to the window menu, Workspaces and choose New Workspace.
08:36 Then you can name it and I'll call it Crazy.
08:39 I'll go ahead and say OK and if I go to the window menu, Workspaces, there it is.
08:46 The check mark tells me that this is the currently selected and active workspace.
08:52 I can go back to my other ones at any time.
08:56 The beautiful thing about this is I really didn't hurt anything.
09:00 I can always go back to the defaults at any time and I can always go back to my own custom
09:06 one in either position as well from over here or in the window menu.
09:12 So what if you don't really like this workspace and it's too crazy?
09:15 Well as long as it's selected, you'll notice that we have the option to delete it.
09:21 Now as I said, it has to be selected.
09:24 So I'll go to Scene Planning real fast and when I go back to the workspaces, you'll notice
09:29 that Delete Workspace is inactive.
09:32 That's because I cannot delete the defaults.
09:35 So I'll click on Crazy, I'll go back to Window, Workspaces, and now I'll go ahead and delete
09:41 Crazy.
09:43 It will now disappear from this list and from this one.
09:47 And that is how you can create your own custom workspaces to manage all these tabs to suit
09:53 your own needs.
09:54 Thanks for watching.
