00:00 Schitt's Creek alum Emily Hampshire is apologizing for her quote "insensitive Halloween costume"
00:07 after poking fun at Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial.
00:13 As seen in since-deleted photos posted to Instagram, Emily wore a striped suit with
00:19 slicked back hair while holding fake poop. Meanwhile, her friend wore a frilly blouse
00:26 with glasses while making a crying face. Taking to Instagram on November 1st, Emily writes,
00:33 "I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things
00:37 I've ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and
00:43 Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe."
00:49 Noting that domestic abuse allegations are quote "never, ever funny," the Canadian actress continues,
00:56 "These are real issues with real people and I really regret my actions. In the future,
01:01 I will do better. I'm so sorry." Back in April 2022, Johnny took Amber to court over an essay
01:09 she penned for the Washington Post in which she described herself as a quote "public figure
01:14 representing domestic abuse." During the highly publicized, weeks-long trial, both actors testified
01:21 that they were abused by the other over the course of their marriage. They wed in 2015 and finalized
01:28 their divorce in 2017. In the end, a Virginia jury sided with Johnny, awarding him $10 million
01:34 in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, later reduced to $350,000
01:43 per the state's limit. Amber, on the other hand, was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages
01:49 as part of her countersuit. After initially filing an appeal, Amber announced her decision
01:54 to settle the case in December, writing in a statement at the time, "I make this decision
01:59 having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment
02:05 and social media fodder. In settling this case, I am choosing the freedom to dedicate my time to
02:11 the work that helped me heal after my divorce, work that exists in realms in which I feel seen,
02:17 heard, and believed, and which I know I can affect change."
