00:00 The offense has been beautiful and Porzingis probably is the biggest reason why.
00:05 Yeah.
00:06 And the maturation of Tatum too, which he's just been outstanding to start the season.
00:10 But yeah, you mentioned the geometry stuff.
00:12 You just think about it to your point, right?
00:13 So Tatum has the ball at the right wing.
00:15 If Porzingis is setting a screen and you have either Derek White or Al Horford or Drew Holiday in the corner.
00:21 Okay.
00:21 So if you blitz Tatum, you're going to give the ball to Porzingis with a wide open path to the basket.
00:28 If help comes from one side, he can kick it to the opposite corner.
00:31 And then if the help comes from Al or Derek White's defender in the right corner, well, then he's going to kick it to those guys who are both, and I'm going to say this now, they're both elite corner three point shooters.
00:41 Derek White's just an elite shooter at this particular point in time.
00:44 He's been shooting north of 40% from three, counting the playoffs since the start of last season.
00:48 So there's nothing you can really do.
00:50 And the numbers backing up.
00:52 If you look at their numbers with them on the court, you mentioned the points per possession with him as the screener.
00:57 If you just look at the Celtics, this is via clean the glass.
00:59 They are shooting with Porzingis on the court.
01:01 73.5% at the rim.
01:04 That's in the 88th percentile.
01:05 How about this?
01:06 It goes up by 19.7%.
01:09 96% percentile.
01:11 Excuse me.
01:12 You look at the short mid range, that little floater area, if you will.
01:15 62.5% with Porzingis on the court.
01:18 98th percentile.
01:19 That's up 31.2% with him on the floor.
01:22 98th percentile.
01:23 Celtics beat is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
01:31 All right, folks, we're back.
01:34 Another episode of Celtics beat.
01:35 Evan Valenti here.
01:37 Adam Kaufman is on the shelf for today.
01:40 He's on the IR.
01:41 He's on the DL.
01:41 He's on the whatever you want to call it.
01:43 He is out a little sick, under the weather.
01:45 Adam, feel better, buddy.
01:46 We miss you here.
01:47 He'll be back next week, I'm sure.
01:49 But we're filling in right now.
01:51 We're bringing on one of our favorites, another Syracuse grad, as you all know and love.
01:55 But we're bringing on the metric man himself, Brian Barrett from the Ringer.
01:58 Barrett, what's going on, brother?
01:59 How are you?
02:00 I'm doing well, man.
02:02 I'm doing almost as well as the Celtics right now.
02:04 I mean, what a start to the season.
02:06 It's crazy, Valenti, because I was thinking about it the other day.
02:09 I didn't have high expectations for the Bruins.
02:11 I thought they'd be a playoff team.
02:13 Well, they're like the best team in the NHL.
02:15 And then we get the best team in the NBA right now in the Celtics.
02:18 And look, I'm not comparing them to Denver.
02:20 I'm just saying to start the season, they're undefeated.
02:22 They've been rolling.
02:23 And it's like the opposite of what we've been going through for the past six months,
02:27 going back to the Red Sox season where they stink.
02:30 The Patriots are a dumpster fire.
02:32 And now the Celtics, I said this the other day on my pod.
02:35 It's like appointment viewing from my perspective, even if it's not a good team.
02:39 Like the other night, I was bummed that Halliburton wasn't going to play because I love watching
02:43 Halliburton play.
02:44 And obviously that certainly the Celtics going to win that game no matter what.
02:48 But at least they have an entertaining player on the floor.
02:50 But I was still interested to watch the game because I want to see what these guys do
02:54 offensively, because the starting five is just so deep.
02:57 The only thing that I would say has hurt me this Celtics season so far is.
03:01 Profits, I had a same game parlay and off the pike, same game parlay the other day.
03:08 Now, Halliburton got voided from this, but I had Tatum for 25 against the Pacers.
03:13 I had Jalen Brown for 20, the Celtics on the money line.
03:17 And as I said, or the Celtics to cover the spread, too.
03:19 And I had Halliburton in there.
03:21 He got voided.
03:22 But Jalen only had 18 points.
03:24 You know why?
03:24 Because he didn't play in the fourth quarter.
03:26 So I'm like watching the third quarter of the game.
03:28 I'm like, Jalen, take another shot.
03:29 Take another shot.
03:30 Keep taking shots.
03:31 Yeah, that's the only thing.
03:32 It's tough to predict these profits because you don't know how many minutes these guys
03:35 are going to play.
03:36 I'm I'm I'm in a similar position here with that Indiana game.
03:39 My fan dual same game parlay.
03:41 And I went a little, you know, again, early part of the season.
03:44 I'm trying to really get my bearings here.
03:46 But I had Tatum 20 plus points.
03:48 Derek White, one plus made threes because that's just a lock every single night.
03:52 He makes a three.
03:53 It's like this has been my thing since the playoffs.
03:56 Derek White, four plus assist Tatum, six plus rebounds.
04:00 And that would have hit those four there.
04:03 But I had to get greedy and add Porzingis with 15 plus points.
04:08 Porzingis 15 plus points.
04:12 Finished with 13.
04:13 I was like you in the third quarter, like just keep like we're so close
04:18 because like I wanted a little extra juice because I think it was like plus
04:21 like one eighty six without the Porzingis prop.
04:25 And then it was like plus three forty two of the Porzingis prop.
04:28 And I'm like, well, like Milo's Turner's a good big.
04:30 I know he's going to be tough, but like he's bringing him out to the perimeter.
04:34 Like maybe we can get like I was trying to do it in my head.
04:37 I'm like, but 15 for the singer.
04:38 I'm like, that's
04:40 I do. I'm with you.
04:42 The same game parlay is via fan duel have been really tough with the season
04:45 because the last two games, they're starting to seven played
04:48 the entire fourth quarter, which is remarkable.
04:51 Actually, we're going to talk about that a little bit.
04:52 But I do want to start with this just broad generalization of this team,
04:57 because four and oh, they have the best offense in the league.
05:01 They have one of the best defenses in the league.
05:03 And, you know, when your starters don't play in consecutive fourth quarters
05:07 like life's going really well.
05:09 But the one thing that I think is interesting is like last year's team
05:13 also got off to a good start going into December.
05:16 They were 18 and four.
05:18 They were twenty one and five in their first twenty six games.
05:21 And I remember thinking about that team and going like
05:24 this team offensively is unbelievable.
05:27 Missoula ball is the way this is where we need to be.
05:29 And I kept thinking defensively.
05:31 I'm like, man, these guys just don't care
05:33 because they're just like offensively on a different planet than everybody else.
05:37 And then obviously, you know, things evened out throughout the season.
05:40 Barrett, this feels a little different, right?
05:43 This feels and I got some numbers from a metric man here later on
05:46 that we're going to go through.
05:48 But just like watching this with the eye test,
05:52 this feels significantly different than last year's team.
05:56 Yeah, for a couple of reasons, the first one is,
06:00 and I thought this was a great follow up by Abby Chen from NBC Sports,
06:04 Boston as well.
06:05 So Jason Tatum said after the game where they beat the Wizards,
06:07 which was for so many reasons, an incredibly entertaining game.
06:11 Jordan pulled in the behind the back and then going back to take a three
06:14 to get blocked by forcing us.
06:15 That was one of the funniest things I've seen.
06:17 And he has a mixtape on Twitter right now from that game, basically,
06:21 because he got stripped basically twice by Drew Holiday on the same play.
06:24 But anyway, I digress.
06:26 After that game, he said some people would say we learned our lesson
06:30 and Abby followed up.
06:31 Would you say that?
06:32 He said, yeah, because how many times last year?
06:34 Did we watch this team?
06:36 Not specifically the offense, but just the effort.
06:38 I remember they got blown out.
06:39 I know Oklahoma City is a good team this year.
06:41 They made it to the play in last year.
06:43 Remember, they gave up like a buck 50.
06:45 They just didn't show up.
06:46 And maybe Chicago is just a weird matchup.
06:48 They lost a bunch of games against Chicago.
06:50 The Magic, who I believe is a good team this year, this year,
06:53 but they were not a great team last year.
06:55 They lost to them not once, not twice, but three times.
06:58 So there were so many games that they just went through the motions.
07:01 And you see with this team, it's like they're trying to prove a point.
07:05 Every night when they're when they're out there and just from a product
07:08 perspective on the court, the biggest difference is, and I hate to say this
07:12 because we all have Marcus Smart, everybody's a threat to shoot. Right.
07:15 And if you look at the way Marcus has started the season, he is now 12 of 40,
07:19 30 percent from three point territory.
07:21 Derek White is shooting.
07:23 Can we swear on this pot? I was going to say he's shooting like crazy right now.
07:26 I don't know if we can swear or not, but holiday.
07:28 He's over 37 percent.
07:30 So and he'll hover around the past three years.
07:32 He hovers between thirty nine and forty one percent.
07:34 So they're shooting all over the space, all over the place.
07:37 And then Porzingis is just lifting the big out of the paint.
07:41 So there's no rent protection.
07:43 And and I've seen numbers to back this up if you want to go through them.
07:45 But they're getting good threes.
07:47 Like last year, it just felt like at times it's like doubling down, right?
07:50 Like a gambler. It's like, I lost this.
07:52 I lost this bet for one hundred.
07:53 Let me throw a two hundred on the next one. Right.
07:55 You're like doubling down. It's like, hey, I missed that three.
07:57 Let me take this three because we're down by ten.
08:00 But it's actually a worse three.
08:01 Like it's not a great look this year.
08:03 All those threes are good.
08:04 Like it's drive kick or it's hey, Tatum's coming off a high pick
08:09 and roll right into his shot.
08:11 Even Jalen, who I don't want Jalen taking a lot of threes.
08:14 But even his threes, I don't feel like they've been rushed.
08:17 And it felt like so many times last year they were just the offense.
08:20 And they're still learning how to play with each other.
08:22 It's just there's not really a weak spot, which is if you go through it.
08:26 I mentioned this to my boss the other day, Bill Simmons, like how many teams
08:29 have had a starting five, this good one through five. Right.
08:32 Obviously, there has been better starting fives like the Warriors,
08:36 who is the best, best team of my lifetime.
08:39 I obviously didn't see the 86 Celtics.
08:41 I guess you could throw the Bulls in the conversation as well.
08:44 I was very young when those teams were coming up.
08:45 But when you have Durant and Curry on the same team
08:48 and you have Klay Thompson at the peak of his power stream on like
08:51 that's the best starting five.
08:52 But the fifth starter was Zaza. Right.
08:54 Like when you look at the cell, you get out.
08:57 Because I was going to bring this up later.
08:59 I have it later because I did like the conversation that Bill
09:02 had on his pod on Friday.
09:04 Like when you add a dollar, it's a definitely makes more sense
09:09 as a five than Zaza Petrullio, man. Like, come on. Yeah.
09:12 So, no, that's a fair point.
09:13 But I sorry, I went on for a while there and why this feels different.
09:17 But it does. And how about the Boorzinga thing?
09:20 He just seems like so happy to be here.
09:22 He called playing defense paradise with Derek White and Drew Holliday.
09:27 It's like who says that?
09:28 I have this running gag that Chris has.
09:30 Boorzinga says not stop smiling since the trade happened.
09:33 Like I think it's like pretty legitimate here when he,
09:35 you know, you think about his career and you think about,
09:39 you know, being the number one in New York like that.
09:41 I think actually that was good for him to like, you know, build up his confidence.
09:45 Like, yeah, I can play with anybody in the league.
09:46 I'm an all star, blah, blah, blah.
09:47 Then he ends up in Dallas in a situation that just it just seems tough
09:50 playing with Luca.
09:51 Like, I'm just going to be honest about it,
09:52 although they've been off to a good start. We'll monitor that.
09:54 But then he ends up in Washington,
09:57 which is just the death of basketball right now.
09:59 It's just, you know, to come to Boston with,
10:02 you know, white holiday Tatum and Brown on the perimeter.
10:06 He's just got to be like, this is great, man. This is just I mean, he has.
10:10 And we're going to get to the defensive stuff later, too.
10:13 But like Jared Dubin did a great job the other day.
10:17 He works for CBS for football reasons.
10:19 And then I think he just post NBA stuff.
10:21 I'm not I think he has like a subset somewhere.
10:23 He talked about the the Chris Stapps Porzingis edition
10:28 and what is done to the geometry of the floor for the Celtics is unbelievable.
10:32 And there's one particular number there, Brian, I think that you'll appreciate.
10:36 Chris Stapps Porzingis is number one in the NBA in points per possession
10:40 as a screen or the Celtics are shooting one point to four
10:43 per possession when the Chris Stapps Porzingis is the screener.
10:47 Like in the end, you think about like geometry, how it sets up.
10:51 If Porzingis, you know, picks and pops what happens to the big
10:55 versus diving to the basket, if he's got a small guy on him,
10:58 like they can really punish specific matchups.
11:02 They are in like this is the one thing that's interesting about this team.
11:05 They are they can hunt.
11:06 But you go back to last postseason with Miami.
11:09 Jimmy would just hunt like his painting picture on the floor.
11:12 All right. You bring him up here.
11:13 I'm just going to put in the torture chamber.
11:15 You know, where where's Grant Williams?
11:17 I'm gonna bring him up here.
11:18 Where's like he just would take turns.
11:21 Boston now has the ability to pick on mismatches,
11:24 unlike ever before, because of Porzingis
11:28 and what they've been able to do to space the floor, like Porzingis
11:31 hanging out in the perimeter now leaves the middle of floor wide open.
11:35 So if they if they overload one side and they put Tatum on the other side,
11:39 we're going to one with somebody smaller than him, aka Bruce Brown or TJ McConnell
11:43 or whoever the hell he want to pick on the other night.
11:46 It's going to be tough sledding for the defender because there's no help coming
11:49 and Tatum one on one of the posts is we'll find out the number.
11:53 I'm sure you got the number.
11:54 It's been deadly so far this season, and he has zero turnovers
11:58 because there's only one guy there.
12:00 So like what Porzingis has brought to this team.
12:04 Brad saw it from a mile away and he spoke about it afterwards.
12:08 He said we were too easy to guard.
12:11 And I think we all could interpret from that is like all of our stuff is
12:15 all of our offense is perimeter based.
12:17 A lot of drives to the basket, trying to get to the rim.
12:20 Now we've spread everything out and made things easier for other guys.
12:24 And that's just by having one guy on the floor and Porzingis.
12:26 And then again, adding holiday, who's an awesome shooter also helps.
12:29 But they've just been the offense has been beautiful.
12:33 And Porzingis probably is the biggest reason why.
12:35 Yeah. And the maturation of Tatum, too, which he's just been outstanding
12:39 to start the season.
12:40 But yeah, you mentioned the geometry stuff.
12:42 You just think about it to your point, right?
12:43 So Tatum has the ball at the right wing.
12:45 If Porzingis is setting a screen and you have either Derek White
12:49 or Al Horford or Drew Holiday in the corner.
12:51 OK, so if you blitz Tatum, you're going to give the ball to Porzingis
12:55 with a wide open path to the basket.
12:58 If help comes from one side, he can kick it to the opposite corner.
13:02 And then if the help comes from Al or Derek White's defender
13:05 in the right corner, well, then he's going to kick to those guys who are both.
13:07 And I'm going to say this now.
13:09 They're both elite corner three point shooters.
13:11 Derek White's just an elite shooter at this particular point in time.
13:14 He's been shooting north of 40 percent from three counting the playoffs
13:17 since the start of last season.
13:19 So there's nothing you can really do.
13:20 And the numbers backing up, if you look at their numbers with them on the court,
13:24 you mentioned the points per possession with him as the screener.
13:27 If you just look at the Celtics, this is via clean the glass.
13:29 They are shooting with Porzingis on the court.
13:32 73.5 percent at the rim.
13:34 That's in the 88th percentile. How about this?
13:36 It goes up by 19.7 percent.
13:39 96 percent. 96 percentile.
13:41 Excuse me.
13:42 You look at the short mid range, that little floater area, if you will.
13:45 62.5 percent with Porzingis on the court. 98th percentile.
13:49 That's up 31.2 percent with him on the floor. 98th percentile.
13:53 So to your point, if we were ranking the best players on the Celtic,
13:58 Celtics, rather, obviously, number one and number two would be Tatum and Brown.
14:02 And then you would probably rank Derek White and Drew Holliday
14:06 over Kristaps Porzingis.
14:08 But what Kristaps Porzingis does is so unique.
14:11 And that's what's opened up everything for this offense.
14:14 And it was an outstanding move by Brad.
14:16 I gave him a ton of credit where it's like, hey, how many times
14:19 are we going to go through a playoff series and run into the same problem?
14:23 Now, last year, of course, they had issues defensively.
14:25 But you go back to the finals against the Warriors.
14:27 You go back to the series that they ended up beating the Bucks in seven games.
14:31 Right. Their defense was elite that entire series.
14:33 It's just the offense needed more diversity to it.
14:37 And they finally figured that out just by this one guy that has unlocked
14:40 so many things for this team.
14:42 I was a little worried about the first game when he played like 39 minutes.
14:45 And now we don't have to worry about the minutes
14:46 because the Celtics aren't playing in fourth quarters, which is nice to see.
14:49 But I'm with you, man.
14:50 I think he's unlocked so much for them.
14:52 And I love seeing him and Tatum play together, man.
14:54 And it's just it's a combination.
14:56 It's a perfect thing.
14:57 And I know Tatum had all the right things to say after Marcus Smart was traded away.
15:01 But there was a lot of this.
15:03 Well, hey, I like this trade, but I would have rather done it for Brogdon.
15:05 And of course, we know what happened.
15:07 Brogdon was originally traded.
15:08 Then he wasn't at this point, man.
15:10 It's like Porzingis is just a way better fit than Marcus.
15:13 I know it's not an apples to apples comparison,
15:15 but that's basically the players you were swapping out.
15:17 He's just a way better fit for what they need to do.
15:19 It's nothing against Marcus.
15:20 It's just it's more praise of Kristaps.
15:22 Yeah. And just to get back to your point about defenses
15:26 trying to figure out what to do against the Celtics,
15:29 pick and roll combo or pick and pop combo with Porzingis.
15:32 Again, I think it was Jared who mentioned that
15:35 like you, you can't the teams are playing them
15:39 and drop like way less because you can't with with Porzingis.
15:42 It's like almost impossible.
15:43 So you have to figure out another way.
15:45 And Boston has counters to all of that so far.
15:48 Like, again, it's early.
15:49 Miami did a really good job of trying to like vary up the coverage, like,
15:52 you know, take them out of the ball.
15:54 Porzingis comes, sets the screen.
15:56 You know, they would double Tatum, you know, leak the help from the
15:59 from the corner to try and, you know, prevent Porzingis to go to the rim.
16:02 But again, then that weak side corner gets his over there.
16:05 Derek White or Jalen Brown or Drew Holiday.
16:07 Like that's the that's the geometry problem that teams are going to figure out.
16:11 Like, how do we you know, do you scram from the double on Tatum
16:14 to get back to the corner?
16:15 Well, now Tatum's one on one with somebody else that he's with a big.
16:18 So you're going to have Tatum one on one with a big from 30 feet away.
16:22 Like, like, just good luck.
16:23 And that's that's the thing that has been so beautiful to watch
16:27 with this team is they have a lot of answers to the test already.
16:31 Like, OK, you do this. We'll do this.
16:33 You're going to do this. We will do this.
16:35 Like if you don't if you don't crash from the corner on a Porzingis,
16:39 well, he's got a wide open lane of the basket.
16:41 And like he said, right, this won't be hard for him.
16:43 And if like he as Jared mentions in the video, like if he misses,
16:47 guess who's all around the basket?
16:49 A bunch of small dudes.
16:50 There's nobody coming.
16:52 Like the big guys not coming from the three point line
16:54 that crashed the glass. He's staying up there.
16:56 So it's it's again, there's a lot of things going on.
16:59 And I have a couple more things we'll mention.
17:01 Score early this NFL season with FanDuel, America's number one sports book.
17:07 Right now, new customers get one hundred and fifty dollars in bonus bets
17:11 with any winning five dollar money bet.
17:14 That's one hundred and fifty bucks.
17:16 Your team wins.
17:17 If you've been thinking about joining FanDuel,
17:19 there's no better time to get in on the action.
17:21 But Phil, the app is so easy to use.
17:24 There's a wide range of betting options, including you get spreads.
17:26 You get your player props. You get overrunners and more.
17:29 So visit FanDuel.com/Boston and kick off the NFL season.
17:34 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
17:37 But again, just the Porzingis edition and again, holiday helps, too.
17:44 But the floor is so spread out, it's going to put a lot of teams
17:48 in tough rotations later on in the season.
17:50 It's just going to be torture chamber all the way around.
17:53 Yeah. And can I mention one other thing about the offense that I really like?
17:56 Because they actually did this with Marcus a lot.
17:59 And I feel like with Marcus, a lot of this was out of necessity,
18:02 because a lot of times he was the only non shooter on the floor. Right.
18:06 So he would actually and this is a really good thing
18:10 that the Celtics did is they would have Marcus screen for Jason Tatum.
18:14 He used to do it all the time.
18:16 And they're doing that with Derek White and Drew Holiday.
18:18 So Jason Tatum is getting screens from smaller guys.
18:22 So that also puts them in a bind. Right.
18:23 Because it's like, hold on, this guy has put on 12 pounds in the offseason.
18:27 And early on, we found out, hey, they're switching guards on to Tatum's like,
18:31 no, I'm not doing this thing anymore where I'm going to step back and take it.
18:34 If I have a smaller defender on me, like I am going to punish you.
18:37 I am going to get you right into the basket and I'm just going to score over you.
18:41 I'm going to get it. And one, whatever it is. Right.
18:43 Or if you do, and we've seen this, if you blitz them
18:47 and you try to get the ball out of his hands, well, then you have Drew Holiday
18:51 or Derek White with the ball at the free throw line with nobody on them.
18:55 And now they have two shooters in the corner.
18:57 They can get into their own little floater game if they want.
19:00 And a lot of times you have a big that is in the dunker spot
19:04 so you can throw up an alley you.
19:06 So that's another play where it's like the Porzingis thing is unlocked
19:09 a lot offensively.
19:10 But secondarily, Drew Holiday and Derek White are really good screeners.
19:15 I just been so impressed with Derek White, man, like the way that he just like
19:19 fits into everything, like the game that where Jalen was going off.
19:22 He's like, OK, I'm not going to shoot.
19:24 I'm just going to I'm going to have eight assists in this game.
19:26 And then the last game, it's like I'm going to take a lot of shots.
19:28 The heat game.
19:29 Hey, Derek, we need to hit shots in the fourth quarter.
19:31 So it's just like they they drew a holiday.
19:34 And Derek White to me are like two of the easiest guys
19:37 to fit onto any team in the NBA, right, because they don't need a lot of shots.
19:41 They're elite defensive players like you have two of the top four
19:45 by the voters last year, guard defenders in the entire NBA.
19:48 It's just, man, I mean, I don't want to sound like too fanboyish right here.
19:52 I said this on my pod the other day, too,
19:54 but it's just they're loaded, man.
19:56 They are loaded.
19:57 We're reacting to what we've seen so far.
19:59 And it's been all all pluses to get to the Derek White
20:02 because I had this later on.
20:03 I want to shut out our buddy Seth Lamin, who's on this podcast last week
20:06 and frequently is my go to guy to figure stats out.
20:11 So Jared had that great video about Chris Dabbs on knocking everything.
20:13 And Seth's been in with me, too, because I was really big.
20:17 Like, I think last year, the on off differential for Derek White on off
20:21 the court, I think Derek on the court, the Southerners were like almost 12 points
20:24 better, I think, per one with him on the floor, which was the number one
20:28 on the team anyway.
20:29 Poor Zingas on the floor team is scoring one hundred twenty five per hundred
20:34 possessions, and they're actually slightly better with him off the floor
20:37 at one twenty eight per hundred.
20:39 Derek White, though.
20:41 Derek White, the Celtics
20:43 is scoring one hundred thirty points per per hundred possessions
20:46 and only one hundred and fifteen with him off. Right now,
20:51 if you put Derek White on and Chris Dabbs off,
20:55 the C's have scored eighty five points in sixty two possessions,
20:59 an offensive rating of one thirty seven.
21:01 That's insane, man.
21:04 That is like saying the guy is like.
21:07 When when I like your people at this network.
21:11 When they made the trade for Derek White didn't like it,
21:14 and when he had a bad finals cream, the Celtics for the trade and cream
21:17 there, white and I was like, Derek White was not the problem.
21:19 The finals was like, that's that's just not what happened here.
21:23 Like, look at Tatum, look at Brown.
21:24 That's where a lot of the problems came from.
21:27 Those guys couldn't like Tatum was gassed.
21:29 Brown was trying to do too much and that just didn't end well.
21:32 Wasn't Derek White's fault since that moment.
21:35 Derek White has been basically everything and more you could ask for.
21:39 I don't think people are mentioned that the pick swap
21:42 they have with the Spurs like three years or four years.
21:45 Twenty twenty eight.
21:46 Yeah, it's going to be good.
21:47 Yeah. Who is still going to be good?
21:49 Tatum is going to sign his super max.
21:51 He's still going to be here.
21:52 Like even if they're
21:53 they probably won't be as good as they are this year.
21:55 It doesn't matter.
21:56 But that's a great number on white, by the way.
21:59 So Derek White, we're recording on Saturday.
22:02 He's not playing in the game on Saturday night because for personal reasons
22:06 and everybody is basically saying it's basically for the birth of a second child.
22:09 Do you realize the last time he didn't play in an NBA game
22:13 was the birth of his first child against the Heat in the Eastern Conference
22:16 Finals, the hundred and eighteen games?
22:18 Think about that.
22:19 The last time I was still working at EI.
22:23 That's how long ago it's been.
22:26 That's the last time Derek White didn't play in a basketball game.
22:29 I was working at WI.
22:32 It's crazy to think about like this.
22:33 He posts in the words of Alex Cora.
22:35 He posts every day.
22:36 And so to your point, like if you just look at him, so
22:39 the numbers this year that you gave out, if you take his one hundred
22:44 and twelve regular season games with the Celtics.
22:46 So this this is not like a small sample size.
22:48 This is one hundred and twelve games, more than a full season, right?
22:52 One hundred and twenty one offensive rating.
22:55 One oh nine point four defensive rating.
22:57 Eleven point six net rating.
22:59 So the Celtics with Derek White, since he stepped onto the floor with them,
23:03 are outscoring teams by twelve points per one hundred possessions.
23:07 Also, if you just take the totality of that plus seven thirty
23:11 and one hundred and twelve regular season games, the Celtics have outscored
23:14 their opponents by seven hundred and thirty points.
23:16 Oh, and this year he at the moment at this recording,
23:20 he's first in true shooting percentage, 82 percent.
23:23 He's second in effective field goal percentage at eighty point nine.
23:26 I don't think that's going to hold up, but fifty seven point nine from three
23:30 and seventy three point three percent from two.
23:33 So he's third in threes and he's ninth and twos in terms of percentages.
23:36 I mean, the guy has turned himself into a non shooter to an elite shooter.
23:42 And it's not like it's going away.
23:43 It's not like it's fluky.
23:44 We saw it for the whole season last year.
23:46 And quite frankly, and I don't want to get like mad about something
23:49 that happened in the postseason last year,
23:50 but they should have played through him more in the heat series, like in game seven,
23:54 where they finally realized like, hey, Tatum's ankles is screwed up.
23:58 Like he's hurt.
23:59 They were playing through Derek White. He started going off like so.
24:02 And now this year is nothing to worry about.
24:04 It's like he's he's going to get all the touches that he needs.
24:07 And he's the connective tissue to this team.
24:09 I just I love what he's been able to do for the organization.
24:12 And man, I got to give Brad Stevens a ton of credit for what he's done.
24:15 You know what?
24:15 We'll never know if he's going to draft in first round picks
24:17 because he's probably never going to get never going to use one.
24:19 Every first round pick that he traded.
24:22 It's been good.
24:23 Derek White, Malcolm Brogdon won six man of the year.
24:26 OK, and then you use Malcolm Brogdon's contract in a trade
24:30 to bring in Drew Holliday.
24:32 So Al Horford, when you dump Kemp's salary and you had to attach a draft
24:36 pick to that, you got Al Horford back and we need to.
24:39 Sean Graney mentions this all the time.
24:41 Thanks, Sam Presti, for putting him on ice for that.
24:43 Basically, the majority of that season, we only played 28 games.
24:46 But yeah, Brad, I I thought he'd get more consideration last year
24:50 for the executive of the year.
24:51 I think he I mean, if things go the way they're going right now
24:54 for the Celtics, I would be surprised if he doesn't win it.
24:56 I'd be I would be stunned, frankly.
24:58 Actually, maybe Joe Krona gets a little piece of that, too,
25:01 because he just really helped us out on that one.
25:02 But we got we got more to talk about with the offense.
25:06 So I do want to take a quick break today.
25:07 Tell you, today's show is powered by FanDuel School.
25:10 Earliest NFL season with FanDuel America's number one sports book.
25:13 Right now, new customers get one hundred and fifty dollars in bonus bets
25:17 with any winning five dollar money line bets.
25:21 One hundred and fifty bucks if your team wins that you pick.
25:25 Folks, it's real simple.
25:26 You've been thinking about joining FanDuel.
25:27 There's no better time to get into the action than right now.
25:30 Let me be honest with you.
25:32 I've said this.
25:33 I've been I've been on this a lot.
25:35 Oftentimes I forget until about like six forty five
25:39 that I got to put in my bets for that evening, you know, for the NBA slate.
25:43 The app makes my life so much easier to be walking my dog,
25:46 listening to Barrett, you know, on off the pike or listen to any other ringer
25:50 podcast to listen to. There are several of them.
25:52 Of course, CNS, too.
25:53 Now, but dang, I got to get my bets in.
25:55 So I'll just take my phone out, put my bet in real simple.
25:58 And we're ready like literally a minute and a half and we're rocking and rolling.
26:01 It's so easy to use so many betting options, including spreads,
26:04 player props, over unders and more.
26:07 And like I've been telling everybody on this and like, look,
26:09 I know we're a Celtics positive podcast. OK, I understand that.
26:13 But I'm also about trying to make money for everybody out there.
26:17 If I possibly can.
26:18 I know my NFL picks have been absolute garbage, but we're trying to come back here.
26:21 Well, NBA, Nicolioka, just plus three forty for MVP.
26:25 He's going to win MVP again.
26:28 He's best player in the world.
26:29 I would lock that down right now.
26:31 I know Lucas having a great season.
26:33 I know Tatum's having a great season.
26:34 Nicholas Yoko is going to win the whole thing.
26:36 So just get some free money while you're at it.
26:38 Evan Valenti, Brian Barrett here on Celtics beat.
26:41 And we're going through the Celtics offense and why it's been so great.
26:44 And everything's been awesome.
26:46 But I did want to get one more little bit in here.
26:49 There's two things, actually.
26:51 Number one, one of the big things that's different about this team, Barrett,
26:54 in terms of their offense.
26:56 They are trading attacks to the rim, drives to the rim for post ups.
27:02 And last year, this is something I'm going to be tracking all season.
27:04 Last year, 2% of their offense were post up attempts.
27:08 This year, hovering around seven and a half, eight percent so far,
27:12 which in a small sample size isn't a lot.
27:14 But if it maintains for an entire season, that is a ginormous number.
27:18 I don't think people are.
27:20 It might seem like a small number, like, oh, it's only 4%.
27:23 Well, it's only 5%.
27:24 That's a ginormous increase anyway.
27:26 And their effectiveness, their efficiency
27:31 out of the post is what really stands out.
27:33 Last year, you know, not a huge focus on their offense.
27:36 This year, it is 13 points per game of the post,
27:39 which is second only in the NBA to the Nuggets.
27:43 And they're scoring one point to one points per possession,
27:46 which is the fourth most efficient number in the league.
27:48 Tatum in the post, specifically lethal.
27:51 One point to four points per possession.
27:53 He has zero turnovers like this.
27:55 I think a lot of old heads when they're like,
27:58 and so it's like too many threes, but like this is maybe what they were looking for.
28:02 I think this is completely transformed everything, like the fact
28:06 that they could pick on people in the post, have easier, you know,
28:09 either it's an easier shot of the rim or get offense
28:11 rebounding opportunities because of it.
28:14 This is game changing.
28:15 I'm not sure who to who to give all the credit to.
28:18 I see Sam Cassell and Jason Tatum all the time working postgame after practice.
28:23 Maybe it's Cassell.
28:25 Maybe it's Charles Lee.
28:27 Maybe it's a combination of everybody.
28:30 Maybe it's Van Gundy.
28:31 I don't know.
28:31 But this particular portion of the team's offense
28:34 is what stuck out to me early on in this number.
28:37 I'm tracking from here to the rest of the season. Yeah. And
28:40 excuse me. Sorry about that, Fonzie.
28:43 The one guy that I would also give credit to is Joe Mastula,
28:47 because if you remember back to media day,
28:51 Joe said that, yeah, we're going to get to the free throw line.
28:55 We have to use post ups.
28:56 It's not we're not always going to be taking threes like we have to mix things up.
29:01 He actually acknowledged that the offense had to change.
29:03 And I think that's something that maybe we take for granted,
29:05 because I'm guilty as anybody with this last year,
29:08 when he's bringing Peyton Pritchard into the game,
29:10 when Jimmy Butler is out there, what are you doing?
29:13 When Grant Williams isn't in the rotation, what are you doing?
29:15 And you're going to sit back and realize this guy was coaching a team
29:19 that had high aspirations that was just coming off a finals appearance.
29:22 They dealt with the whole EMA situation and said, hey, Joe,
29:26 you're coaching this team now.
29:27 He was not going to be a head coach in the NBA, so he was learning on the job.
29:31 So for him to sit back and realize, like, we got to do some things
29:34 differently around here and he has his own staff, to your point.
29:38 Sam Cassell, who's been working on all the post stuff with Jason Tatum,
29:42 like that was a brilliant move to bring in Sam Cassell and also Charles Lee.
29:46 And it just so it just happens to work out
29:49 that Charles Lee coached Drew Holliday for the past three years.
29:52 So it's like the perfect type of guy to have the perfect type of coaching staff
29:55 to have. And the biggest guy I would say you give the credit to is Tatum himself,
30:01 because I was a little bit concerned.
30:04 I'm going to be honest about this.
30:05 When he put on 12 pounds, I'm like, because if you looked at his three point
30:08 numbers, they went down every year and you could look, the attempts are harder.
30:11 Nobody's dismissing that.
30:12 But there was no reason he should be a below average three point shooter
30:16 from a numbers perspective, 35 percent.
30:18 So I was like, hey, it's like maybe it's like gaining weight
30:20 every offseason affecting him.
30:22 But now what we've seen is he's just weaponized his physicality.
30:26 So when he gets that, he's just backing you in.
30:29 And it's just he has so many different tools he can.
30:31 And maybe Cassell is giving us a lot of credit for this.
30:34 He has so many different like counters to, hey, if if if he's spinning this way
30:38 and the defender goes, he's going to go like it's just it's really pretty to watch.
30:42 Like his his post game and just his game, like I would say
30:47 eight to ten feet around the basket is just so clean.
30:50 And it's just like so polished.
30:52 When he does those little turnarounds now, I never think he's going to miss.
30:55 Dude, he had he's had a couple of those, like the first one
30:58 in the first game against against the Knicks.
31:01 He had one. He's on the left side.
31:02 I think when Grimes has him and then Mitchell Robinson comes up
31:06 because he like gets he gets by Grimes is like a fake spin on Robinson
31:11 and then it gets him like up and under underneath for the end one. Yeah.
31:15 I'm like, if you're the Knicks, like I'm just not quite sure
31:18 how you're going to guard this guy if he's going to be doing that kind of stuff.
31:21 And then he had one the other night against the Pacers again on the left side
31:26 ends up like getting by two guys and then like somehow slithering his way
31:32 like in between and then up and under to finish on the other side of the rim
31:35 on the right side.
31:36 I'm like, dude, if he's doing this stuff and in threes, you're in trouble.
31:40 I mean, you're just in trouble.
31:41 He's picking on, you know, Bruce Brown.
31:43 Come on down like he's picking on TJ McConnell.
31:46 He's picking on this guy.
31:47 Dude, Aaron Neesmith got somebody put together.
31:51 I felt bad for him, dude, because Jalen got him to.
31:54 Yeah. Well, somebody put that video together.
31:55 Both of them do it like the same turnaround fade away.
31:58 Defender both times is Aaron Neesmith.
32:01 I'm like, oh, my God, this poor guy.
32:03 You'd absolutely shredded.
32:04 But they look, everything has been working really well.
32:07 The offensive numbers are through the roof.
32:09 The only thing that I think that I I have concern about
32:12 and if there is anything to be concerned about, it is the only thing
32:15 they're just the assist numbers aren't quite there.
32:18 Like they're just like the percentages are way down.
32:21 They're twenty eight in assists.
32:24 How many field goal makes they make that are assisted?
32:27 They're scoring more than anybody else.
32:29 So this, you know, the SKUs can can go either way.
32:32 They have the best effective field goal percentage in the league.
32:34 So they're getting great shots.
32:36 They're hitting a lot of them.
32:38 Yet there's this little thing that's hanging over everything.
32:41 It's like if they could just get this like
32:44 if they could just get this number to improve a little bit,
32:46 then there's nothing to complain about.
32:48 But I guess like but to me, again, I test the ball.
32:52 This isn't really stick like no way that it has in the past.
32:56 Am I crazy for that?
32:58 No, I so I know the assists are down and even compared to last year, right?
33:03 Like the assist numbers are not good for this team.
33:04 The one thing I'll say where I think they found a way to make up for that.
33:09 And I noticed it in the first game of the season.
33:13 And I actually mentioned it on my pod is when Al's in the corner
33:18 or when our guy Bursett, when O'Shea Bursett's in the game,
33:21 when Al's in the corner and a shot goes up, he crashes.
33:25 So there has been an emphasis to crash the board.
33:28 So if you look at the Celtics this season, they are actually six in the NBA.
33:31 I just brought it up.
33:32 Six in offensive rebounds per game at twelve point three,
33:34 basically tied for fifth with the Golden State Warriors.
33:36 The Celtics didn't do that last year.
33:39 They were in the bottom ten in the NBA in terms of offensive rebounding.
33:42 So I don't think like if you look at this team,
33:45 I don't think they have like a great passer, like as much as we want to make.
33:48 Like smarts gone and he can't shoot it.
33:51 He was their best passer.
33:53 I mean, that's just the reality of the situation.
33:55 But the Celtics, in terms of ways they make up for that, is they're getting
33:58 themselves extra possessions because of the offensive rebounding.
34:02 And to your point that you mentioned earlier with the Corsingas
34:05 opening things up, a lot of these baskets they're getting,
34:09 they're either pull ups like in the short mid range or the three point territory
34:14 or their drive to the basket, which you're not going to get assist on that.
34:18 Right. So a lot of the diet, like the way they're living offensively,
34:21 their shot chart, it isn't going to have you having a ton of assists.
34:25 Right. Because it's not like when the Warriors were at their peak
34:29 and they had a million assists and the ball was just flying around.
34:31 That's not how the Celtics play.
34:32 And the Celtics shouldn't play that way because of the individual talent they have.
34:35 But I don't think that that assist number is going to go up
34:38 like tremendously over the course of the season.
34:40 Now, I think it'll go up a little bit from where it's at right now.
34:43 But I'm not concerned about it because I don't think their style of play
34:46 dictates a lot of assists.
34:50 Yeah, I just I think, again, if you're going to find something to nitpick on,
34:54 that's the only thing I can really nitpick.
34:56 I just this team is a well-oiled machine right now.
34:59 And it's crazy because, again, as your boss said, they replaced,
35:03 you know, two of their starting five, essentially by bringing in Porzingis,
35:07 adding Derek White and Drew Holiday into this whole thing.
35:11 Like they've completely changed what their what their offensive game plan is.
35:15 They've changed the rotation.
35:18 They lost what they lost. Grant, they lost smart.
35:20 They lost Malcolm.
35:21 So they lost, you know, almost half their top seven, top eight.
35:25 Like and yet here we are.
35:27 They're four. No, they're just they're just running through teams.
35:31 And they have a Brooklyn game tonight, you know, with no Nick Claxton.
35:35 So good luck there, because I mean, I like Nick Claxton.
35:38 Nick Claxton is a great player.
35:39 He's a great rim protector for them.
35:41 I'm not quite sure what they're going to do without him in the game tonight.
35:43 I'm curious to see how it goes down.
35:45 But this has just been a lot of fun.
35:47 And, you know, we've done a lot of offense and we've gone long enough.
35:50 But I just you know, I just got to say the Boston Stock Exchange
35:54 has a nickname.
35:56 Oh, yeah. Nickname.
35:57 Elite level nickname.
35:59 Those came up with that.
36:00 Derek White's dad.
36:02 Oh, it was OK.
36:03 I first saw him do it.
36:05 I think it's I think he's going to get credit for it.
36:07 But this defense is something that we can't like.
36:10 We just can't ignore.
36:13 All right. Defensively, they're blocking a kajillion shots a game,
36:16 primarily with their two guards.
36:19 But Porzingis has been cleaning up and then their defensive rebounding.
36:22 They're the best defensive rebounding team in the league.
36:25 So it's like.
36:27 Yes, the only thing you could maybe harp on is they're not forcing turnovers.
36:30 But when you finish possessions with defensive rebounds anyway
36:34 and they get out in transition, even though they're not forcing turnovers.
36:38 Does it matter?
36:40 Like that's that's another thing.
36:41 I get that these are small
36:43 parts of this big picture has been all positive.
36:47 But like I have no no complaints, really.
36:50 Yeah. And part of it, too, like the rebounding point you bring up,
36:52 it's the most underrated part of Bo Tatum's game.
36:56 This guy is an absolutely elite rebounder.
36:59 I don't know. I said this guy like I'm John Gruden.
37:00 He is an elite rebounder.
37:02 He averaged eight point eight last year and.
37:05 LeBron, Kawhi and Durant have never averaged eight point eight for a season.
37:10 Jason Tatum has now had two seasons where he's in the playoffs,
37:14 averaged ten rebounds per game.
37:15 Durant's never done that.
37:16 Kawhi's never done that.
37:17 LeBron's done it twice like Tatum.
37:19 OK, so this guy's an elite level of rebounder.
37:21 So that's part of it, too.
37:22 And the other thing about I was just thinking about the defense
37:24 as you were talking about it, Drew and Derek White are so smart.
37:27 Like they like these doubles when the guys back turn, they'll just go pick their pocket.
37:31 I mean, Jordan Poole is like an easy guy to.
37:34 Was. Oh, my God.
37:35 He must have nightmares that night because they were.
37:37 Oh, that's a clown.
37:39 Did you hear what he said to?
37:40 He said, like, before the season, his legacy is already cemented,
37:44 I guess, because he won a championship with the Warriors.
37:46 Like, dude, you've been in the league for like four or five years.
37:48 So what are you talking about?
37:49 You were like the fourth banana on an unbelievable offensive team.
37:53 But like now that you're like, I was a scout that just like
37:56 did him a little dirty in the broadcast.
37:57 He's like, yeah, now that you're not the now that you're number one on a bad team,
38:01 everybody looks at you like you can't get away with this stuff anymore.
38:03 I would be so mad if I was Kuzma because Kuzma, when he was on the Lakers,
38:08 he played really good defense in the bubble when they won the championship.
38:11 And I think Kuzma is a pretty good player.
38:13 Like I think some contenders should take it.
38:14 He's a good wing defender.
38:16 Yeah. And he can he can shoot.
38:17 He can score.
38:18 I mean, he's he's a good player.
38:19 I hope he gets on a good team.
38:20 Just I hope it's not in the Milwaukee Bucks because I would not like to see him
38:23 in Milwaukee. But I was thinking about the defensive personnel.
38:26 Who's who's the worst defender in the top six?
38:29 Jalen, I think it's like so if you were going to if you're going to rank them,
38:34 it's the top three is very difficult to rank for me because it's you
38:38 have a holiday holiday white and Tatum.
38:40 Those three guys.
38:41 I think it's white.
38:43 Or but is it holiday?
38:44 Because holiday can guard up a little more than.
38:46 And I know the whole Jimmy Butler thing last year in the playoffs.
38:49 But I mean, Jimmy's a great postseason player,
38:51 but holiday can guard a little bit off.
38:53 But like that's that's probably Derek White can't really go.
38:56 I mean, he'll he'll do it.
38:57 But you rather Drew be on a three than Derek White be on a three.
39:01 But I don't even know.
39:02 Like, how would you even rank the top three?
39:04 Right. It's it's Drew is Derek and Tatum.
39:07 And that's no slight of Tatum
39:09 at all, because if he needed to.
39:11 The problem with Tatum is he has to play.
39:13 You know, he's their main focal point in offense.
39:15 So you're going to have to live a little bit, like give a little bit somewhere.
39:18 But Tatum is as good as a wing defender
39:21 that has that responsibility as anybody to leave.
39:23 And that's why, like the Paul George comparison is really good,
39:26 because it's like a guy that can really rebound space to floor,
39:30 get to the rack, play good defense.
39:32 Like we're not going to do Kauai level defense here, because that's just again.
39:35 I think Kauai is like the second best wing defender
39:38 I've ever seen after like Scottie Pippen, like that.
39:40 And just know there's nobody.
39:42 My favorite stat is I think that I think the stat is.
39:47 Kauai has more steals and fouls.
39:50 Which is really a bizarre thing, I think I'm pretty sure that's it.
39:56 I think Kauai has more steals and fouls, which is just insane.
39:59 But like, you know, Tatum's not that level of defender,
40:03 but it's pretty close.
40:05 But all the other stuff makes him, you know, it combines to be a superstar
40:08 level player.
40:09 I think Tatum's the third best defender of that crew, and it's no slight at him.
40:12 Drew, I still just laugh at what Drew did to
40:16 to Julius Randall opening night.
40:18 Oh, yeah. Just the best.
40:21 Oh, my God. He's like ruined his season.
40:23 Julius Randall hasn't had a shot since then.
40:25 Awful. Just in his head the whole time.
40:28 But like, look, it's been a fun first four games.
40:32 The fifth ones tonight.
40:34 You know, Boston at this particular juncture
40:37 is the last undefeated team in the league.
40:39 We'll see if they are tomorrow when most people listen to this podcast.
40:43 But I mean, you know.
40:46 I'm like you, I'm I'm like Mad Knights, they don't play.
40:50 I'm like, what else am I going to do tonight?
40:52 What am I going to clean?
40:53 I'm not going to clean.
40:54 I'm not going to do laundry.
40:55 I don't want to do any of that stuff.
40:56 I want to watch. I want to watch the Celtics.
40:58 I don't want me to cook. I'm not doing that.
41:00 I want to like.
41:02 You do cook a lot, though.
41:03 I see the pictures, man. You're a good cook, huh?
41:05 I've been I've been doing some new stuff.
41:08 I did. I did a little
41:11 butternut squash cream sauce on my pasta the other day and actually.
41:14 Oh, spectacular.
41:16 If you have any questions, please holler at me either on Instagram
41:19 or whatever.
41:20 But like I'm I'm this winter
41:24 is going to be about two things now that the C's are amazing.
41:27 So be about the C's and me cooking different types of pasta for.
41:30 I like it.
41:31 We'll be ready to rock and roll.
41:33 That's Brian Barrett off the pike and the ringer.
41:35 Barrett, it's always good having you on.
41:38 It's always good having you on after a fresh cut.
41:40 Like, I think you just got out of the barber's chair like 20 minutes ago.
41:43 Roll right in right.
41:44 Iraq. But every every two weeks, man, I know it's a clockwork for you.
41:49 I got I let it go longer.
41:51 You know, I got a I wish I could.
41:54 But with my schedule, I can't I just can't get there.
41:57 I get like every every four to six weeks.
42:00 Yeah, you can pull off the long hair, though.
42:02 I can't I've grown my hair up before, like in the past.
42:04 I mean, we're going back, you know, decades, at least a decade.
42:07 Now it didn't look good.
42:08 I was not a big flow guy.
42:09 I got to keep I got to keep it high and tight.
42:11 You know what I'm saying?
42:11 You're going to flow.
42:12 I'll get us out of here in this last and we'll take a shot.
42:15 Another Syracuse guy, Nick Wright's got to cut flow, man.
42:17 Like, come on, bro.
42:19 I've known Nick.
42:21 I've been following.
42:21 I don't know Nick right personally, but I've been following him since he's had,
42:24 like, you know, you know, shaved head, you know, going, you know, mostly like,
42:28 you know, high and tight, low cut.
42:29 And then he's just got this flow.
42:31 And first things first, whatever the heck that show is.
42:34 It just just kills me every time.
42:36 It's just it's brutal, man.
42:37 I haven't seen it. It's like long, like, like long hair, like almost.
42:41 Yeah. Like hockey here.
42:42 It's yeah, it's he's got hockey here for sure.
42:44 It's unbelievable.
