Byomkesh Bakshi is called upon by a wealthy businessman named Digindranarayan Roy to investigate the theft of his family heirloom, the Seemant Heera, a priceless diamond. Roy had been keeping the diamond in a safe in his house, but it was stolen one night while he was away.
Byomkesh begins his investigation by interviewing Roy's family and staff. He learns that Roy had been having financial difficulties and had recently sold some of his other possessions. He also learns that Roy's son, Amit, had been gambling heavily and had lost a large amount of money.
Byomkesh suspects that Amit may have stolen the diamond to pay off his gambling debts. He also suspects that Amit may have had an accomplice, as the diamond was too well-hidden for one person to have stolen it on their own.
