The tribal population of MP’s Malwa-Nimar region is again in focus ahead of the assembly elections on November 17. As many as 22 of the 66 seats in the region are tribal-dominated, and the community has traditionally played the role of kingmaker in state politics. However, for the over 80% tribal population of the region’s Jhabua district, an escape from poverty remains a distant dream as nearly half of the locals fall below the poverty line. Outlook’s Abhik Bhattacharya spoke to local journalist Virendra Singh Ratore about the issues and challenges for the tribals of Jhabua ahead of the upcoming elections. The district, among the poorest in the state, has witnessed large-scale migration due to the lack of any major industries. Even agriculture has failed to produce sufficient employment due to the absence of irrigation and water sources, while infrastucture remains poor at best.
