Edinburgh retro: Portobello in 1970s and 1980s

00:00 Hello, I'm Neil from the Evening News and this video is part of a retro series where

00:06 we look back at historic pictures of Edinburgh. In this video we'll be looking at Portobello

00:11 in the 1970s and 80s. Starting off in 1980, here we see a delivery of new sand being unloaded

00:19 at Portobello Beach. In this picture from the summer of 1981, we see children having

00:25 a ride on Shetland ponies, and again on another sunny day in May 1989. This picture shows

00:34 Portobello's open-air swimming pool being demolished in May 1988. Here we see Portobello

00:41 Power Station being demolished in December 1978. The site of the power plant would be

00:47 completely cleared by October 1980. Locals dressed in historical costume for a splash

00:56 in the sea during the Portobello Victorian Splash in June 1989. Here we see a disused

01:04 public wash house or steamy at Adelphi Grove Portobello in November 1977. The entrance

01:12 to Fun City amusement park on Portobello Promenade, September 1974. Located on Harbour Green for

01:20 over 100 years, at one time it was the second oldest amusement park in Britain behind Blackpool.

01:27 Although there were plans to rejuvenate the park in the 1990s, it would later be demolished

01:32 in 1998 to make way for flats. Children and families enjoy the May sunshine on the beach

01:39 and the promenade at Portobello in 1975. Here we see DJ Mike Reid and hundreds of children

01:47 who turned up at Portobello Beach for Radio 1 Roadshow in July 1987. If you'd like to
