On the last day of the JC3 Journey to Zero Conference 2023, CEO of HSBC Amanah Malaysia Raja Amir Shah stressed the importance of the mission ahead and said that profit must not be prioritised over the future generations.

00:00 The world must limit the global temperature rise

00:02 to 1.5 degrees Celsius or face the dire consequences.

00:06 This is a decisive decade to make that happen.

00:11 Now our hearts and minds must be focused

00:13 on the greatest challenge of our time, arguably.

00:17 Climate change is a reality that needs to be addressed

00:20 and profit must not come at the compromise

00:23 of future generations,

00:25 but support the world that they deserve.

00:28 What is the alternative?

00:29 Should we turn a blind eye?

00:31 This is the loss of economic competitiveness

00:34 as multinationals will move away their value chains

00:38 to other jurisdictions and increasing weather events

00:42 that we are already seeing today,

00:45 which will put at risk our cities, our industries,

00:50 agriculture, fisheries, just to name a few.

00:52 This is a future that cannot be allowed to occur

00:56 for the prosperity of our people

00:58 and the sanctity of our environment

01:00 of which we are but a trustee

01:03 and a custodian for the next generation.

01:06 In my role as chair of the capacity building

01:08 and engagement stream of JC3 to take action

01:11 based on these three core principles.

01:15 Firstly, we will make public, transparent and firm targets

01:20 in line with scientific pathways

01:23 towards transitioning our businesses,

01:26 our value chains and our clients towards net zero.

01:29 Secondly, we will focus on our efforts in funding

01:34 and facilitating capital towards the transition to net zero.

01:38 And as we heard today,

01:40 biodiversity cannot take a second step.

01:44 And finally, we will ensure a just, fair

01:49 and inclusive transition to ensure that no one,

01:52 and I mean no one is left behind in this journey

01:55 towards a net zero future.
