How is Kent caring for the climate during Halloween?

From reducing pumpkin waste, reusing old decorations and recycling house hold items. These are just a few ways to be more sustainable during this seasonal celebration.

00:00 Being eco-friendly at Halloween can be a challenge, however I have a few tips and tricks which

00:09 can help you be more sustainable around this seasonal celebration.

00:12 Firstly, why not buy decorations that you can store away and use again, like this one.

00:18 Secondly, try and avoid buying plastic, now I know that can be really hard around Halloween,

00:23 so why not try and top out your plastic bowl for one that you can really use again next

00:28 year.

00:29 And lastly, I'm going to show you how you can turn some household items into spooky

00:33 decorations.

00:34 For our first decoration, I collected some fallen leaves from my garden, however you

00:40 can get these from your local park or on your daily walk.

00:43 Using a hair tie, I put the leaves to my upcycled jam jar to create a seasonal candle holder.

00:49 And I added a bit of twine and placed a light inside to finish the final look.

00:54 Instead of carving my pumpkin, I am painting it to make it last longer, and so I can create

00:58 a soup once I am finished with it being a decoration.

01:02 If you do carve your pumpkin, instead of using bleach to preserve it, why not try lemon?

01:07 By painting my pumpkin, I found I also had space for two faces.

01:12 And finally, some twine, a pen and some old paper bags from my shopping, I have created

01:16 a super spooky banner to put in my home.

01:19 You can also try to cut out some ghosts, bats or pumpkin shapes.

01:22 Be creative with it.

01:24 But it's not only decorations you can make at home.

01:28 Local eco groups say you can stay spooky while caring for the climate at the same time.

01:33 When it comes to things like lanterns and pumpkins, it's important that we try and work

01:37 out where they've come from, are they locally sourced?

01:40 What can we do with them?

01:41 Can we make sure we make soups and pies out of them?

01:43 And what do we do with them at the end?

01:44 So we can't just throw them in the rubbish because they contribute towards carbon emissions,

01:49 but equally we're encouraged now to perhaps find a local wildlife rescue or compost them.

01:55 Other ideas could include borrowing and swapping children's costumes.

02:00 There's loads that kick around in second-hand charity shops.

02:03 But also have a look locally what there are that you can do to support local wildlife

02:09 events.

02:10 So there are things like bat walks or spider hunts or things like that.

02:13 So kind of looking at framing it more of a kind of autumnal celebration as opposed to

02:17 necessarily doing things the way they've always been done.

02:21 Even like the sweets, if you're going to be buying sweets for the kids, perhaps just try

02:23 and look for a gelatin-free auction as opposed to just kind of buying the same old sweets.

02:28 So they're little tweaks, they're nothing major and there's still a great opportunity

02:31 to go out and have fun.
