00:28 said although Selakan Island and its community
00:31 boast a rich history, culture, and marine biodiversity,
00:34 yet they face the challenge of coral degration,
00:38 excavated by various factors, including the lingering impact
00:41 of historical fish bombing.
00:43 He said the work by the Selakan group
00:46 was not only important to safeguard
00:48 their cultural and environmental heritage,
00:51 mainly the precious coral reefs, but also a uniting factor
00:54 for marine conservation.

01:01 Organized by Reef Check Malaysia and Sabah Parks,
01:04 the program was part of the community-based coral
01:07 restoration and conservation program
01:09 within the Tun Sakaran Marine Park.
01:12 In addition to the deployment of 290 reef stars,
01:16 Reef Check Malaysia and Sabah Parks
01:18 conducted a wellness session for the children of Selakan Island
01:22 on the role of reefs in marine ecosystems.
01:25 The 10-day program was part of a two-year collaborative project
01:29 between Reef Check Malaysia and Sabah Parks
01:32 with the support of several partners.
01:35 The next phase will see the installation
01:37 of an additional 200 reef stars in partnership
01:40 with the local community.
