Often referred to as Maharashtra's lady cop, Meera Borwankar has stirred controversy in the state's politics after the release of her book Madam Commissioner On the 15th of October.

Now who is Meera Borwankar and why has her book created controversy?

Meera Borwankar in her book sharing an incident said ""The then guardian minister had insisted her to complete the process of handing over an auctioned plot belonging to the police department in Yerwada to a private party in the year 2010, which she later managed to get back through a ""tough struggle"".

Although, The Guardian minister's name is not mentioned in the book. However, The minister has been referred to as ""Dada"". And the time period which has been mentioned is when Ajit Pawar was the guardian Minister of Pune.

Borwankar further claimed that she had also approached the then Home Minister RR Patil, but even he couldn't stop the auctioning as his hands were tied.

Borwankar has further alleged that the auction was against the police department and that there was a ""definite scam"" in handing over the land to private players, with huge kickbacks to politicians and bureaucrats.

""I met the Guardian minister in the divisional commissioner’s office. He had a huge paper map of the area with him. He explained that the auction had been successfully concluded and I should proceed to hand over the land to the top bidder. I replied that as Yerawada had become literally the centre of Pune, the police would never get such prime land in the future and that we needed it to construct more offices as well as residential quarters for the police. I added that having recently taken over, giving police land to a private party would be perceived as the new police commissioner having sold herself out. But the minister simply overruled me and insisted that I complete the process, which he declared was over.""

“Unhappy with his instructions, I asked him politely why my predecessor – the previous police commissioner – had not handed over the land if the auction had already concluded. I even said that the process itself was flawed in my opinion, and against the interest of the police department. It would just not be possible for me to relinquish such a prime piece of police land to a private party when we ourselves needed it, I told him gently but with finality. The minister lost his cool and hurled the map at the glass table.” Borwankar writes.

Now Borwankar has also revealed about who was the highest bidder. The highest bidder was charged by the CBI in the 2G scam.

The matter then reached the court where the Maharashtra's home department refused to oppose the deal while the police department was against the deal.

Meera Borwankar is a recipient of the President of India Police Medal for Distinguished Services 2006 & Police Medal for Meritorious Services (1997) Meera Borwankar served in Maharashtra from 1981 to 2017.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar has denied all allegations.
