2024 Audi SQ5 / SQ5 Sportback
Starting from $58,195

While the standard Audi Q5 and SQ5 are both built from the same quality stock, the SQ5 has a twinkle in its eye and an appetite for fun that's missing from the other venerable Q5. Of course, he adorns the piece with a unique mesh grille pattern, blackout details, and larger wheels. Carbon trim gives the interior an elegant yet sporty ambiance, and leather sports seats are available, as is Audi's excellent digital cockpit. Backing that boldness is a 354-hp turbocharged V-6 that beats the base Q5's 40 turbo four by 93 ponies.

Like most of the Audi lineup, the SQ5 sees some significant technology and feature improvements for 2024. Adaptive cruise with adaptive cruise control is standard; the latter features advanced traffic sign recognition to ensure better effectiveness in all driving situations. Lane keeping assist and a heated steering wheel with Onboard Detection (HoD) join the standard roster. Remote start is newly available via the myAudi app, which now works with third-party services including Spotify, Amazon Music and more. Arkona White replaces Ibis White exterior paint across the entire model family.

Unlike its Q5 sibling, the SQ5 eliminates the guesswork by offering just one powertrain: a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 349 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission transfers output to all four wheels via Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system; this system can direct up to 85 percent of the available torque to the rear wheels in the case of the SQ5. The SQ5 hit 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, while the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 did the same in 4.5 seconds. Steering response is accurate and well weighted, but the chassis favors a compliant ride over razor-sharp reflexes. We think most buyers in this segment will be extremely pleased with the SQ5's straight-line speed and pothole-clearing ride.

Standard infotainment features for the SQ5 include two USB ports, three 12-volt outlets, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Wireless Apple CarPlay smartphone integration comes standard. Audi's Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display is standard on mid-range Premium Plus and upper Prestige trims; Navigation is optional on Premium Plus but standard on Prestige. Among other tricks, the gauge cluster display provides a satellite street view of directions from the navigation system, so drivers never have to guess whether they're on the right road. In a world where almost everyone has a GPS-equipped smartphone in their pocket, this is a bit of a trick. The addition of USB ports for rear seat passengers would be welcome.
