The eighth stage of the 1982 Rallye Paris-Alger-Dakar was held on 09 January of that year between Timaouine in Algeria and Gao in Mali. Near the end of that stage, already inside the territory of Mali, a support petrol tanker Mercedes-Benz that was following the race went off the road and overturned. The journalist Ursula Zentsch, reporter of French magazine "Le Point" was killed instantly in the accident, and the Japanese rider Kasori, also involved in the crash with his Sukuki #82, sustained a injured leg.

This was the second of three fatalities occurred during the 1982 Rallye Paris-Alger-Dakar, after Dutch rider Bert Oosterhuis who fell in Algeria and before the young boy killed in an accident with a race-vehicle in Mali.
