The fastest, stealthiest, and most agile fighter of the century, the American 6th generation
00:12
NGAD fighter will be everything for the Chinese and Russian militaries to fear and lose to,
00:17
should the seemingly likely war between the world powers eventually break out.
00:22
The NGAD fighters will be crucial in such a war, and hundreds of them could take to
00:26
the sky to deal unprecedented damage.
00:29
This is our focus in this video today, the 6th generation fighter that can shock the
00:34
world and how the Air Force will wield a lethal, unstoppable, massive fleet of 200 of them.
00:44
On March 7th, at the 2023 Air and Space Forces Association's Warfare Symposium, Secretary
00:51
of the Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Frank Kendall discussed the Air Force's future plans
00:55
to maintain its air superiority.
00:58
This was the first time the service has given a real sense of the scope and scale of its
01:02
plan for its future fighter plans.
01:05
The plan revolves around acquiring 200 units of the 6th generation NGAD fighter, operating
01:10
the existing 300 units of the 5th generation F-35 Lightning II, and supporting those fighters
01:16
with 1,000 autonomous drones, with each fighter having two drones.
01:22
The drones, also known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft, or CCAs for short, are being developed
01:28
alongside the manned 6th generation NGAD fighter.
01:31
In other words, they would be 6th generation combat drones.
01:35
They would act as extensions of the sensors, electronic warfare, and weapons on manned
01:40
fighters, saving the fighters from taking on the risk of going to the edge of battle
01:44
until absolutely necessary.
01:46
For this life-saving fighter drone configuration, the Air Force is sparing no expense.
01:52
For the fiscal year 2024 alone, the service has a budget of $2.4 billion, and $392 million
01:59
of this goes to the development of the CCAs.
02:02
These numbers would likely only increase over the coming years, as the Air Force has previously
02:07
made it clear that each NGAD fighter will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and
02:11
the overall NGAD program could cost over $100 billion.
02:16
For context, America's current most lethal fighter, the F-22 Raptor, costs a whopping
02:22
$350 million, the most of any fighter in history.
02:27
And the F-22 Raptor is what the NGAD fighter is slated to replace when it enters service,
02:32
although that move may be a bit controversial, and we'll get to why in a minute.
02:36
For now, it's important to note that the total of 200 NGAD combat jets is roughly equivalent
02:41
to the size of the Air Force's current F-22 Raptor fleet, hinting that the entire F-22
02:47
fleet will be replaced.
02:49
The F-22 is reportedly involved in the NGAD program as some form of testbed upon which
02:54
the NGAD fighter would be born.
02:56
This is expected, as only the current indomitable, unrivaled, and unmatched fighter can birth
03:02
a new, more indomitable, more unrivaled, and more unmatched fighter and overall program
03:08
that's packed with jaw-dropping, never-before-seen capabilities.
03:13
NGAD Capabilities NGAD stands for Next Generation Air Dominance.
03:18
It is the United States' sixth-generation program tasked with developing the future generation
03:23
family of systems that will ensure air superiority for U.S. forces in the most challenging operational
03:29
environments.
03:30
The idea that would birth the NGAD was initiated in 2014 after the Defense Advanced Research
03:35
Projects Agency, or DARPA, had completed its Air Dominance Initiative study in March 2014.
03:42
The U.S. Air Force would join in on this quest in 2016 via the AS-2030 flight plan, although
03:48
the service was initially focused on a single future-generation fighter jet as opposed to
03:52
what it is today, a family of systems.
03:56
NGAD, as a family of systems, is developing several key technologies in areas such as
04:01
propulsion, stealth, advanced weapons, digital design, and thermal management of the aircraft
04:06
signature.
04:07
These technologies will be used to build new sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles, weapons,
04:12
and the centerpiece around which others revolve, the manned, sixth-generation NGAD fighter.
04:18
The NGAD fighter, to a great extent, defines the entire NGAD family of systems.
04:23
Its capabilities could either make or mar the capabilities of other NGAD systems.
04:29
So to know the true potential and capabilities of NGAD, it is important to take a look at
04:33
the capabilities of the fighter, particularly in crucial areas such as stealth, architecture,
04:39
sensors, and weapons.
04:41
Stealth Stealth is an advancement that has been here
04:44
only one generation of fighters ago, but it's one that's here to stay.
04:49
According to the Air Force's biennial acquisition report covering the fiscal years 2019 and
04:54
2020, the NGAD fighter maximizes its stealth features by taking an overall triangular shape,
04:59
internally holding its payload, and having no distinct tail section, also known as vertical
05:04
stabilizers.
05:06
It is the first fighter in history to be unveiled with such a revolutionary design.
05:11
Vertical stabilizers had always been required to keep an aircraft airborne until the concept
05:16
of active flow control came to life in the B-2 spirit.
05:20
Active flow control uses computer brains on board to constantly adjust the flow around
05:24
the aircraft to keep it airborne, similar to how birds fly.
05:28
The result of this on an aircraft is top-level stealth, and, well, it's not a wallet-friendly
05:34
cost.
05:35
This to an extent justifies why the B-2 costs $2 billion and why Congress has budgeted over
05:41
$10 billion for the NGAD in less than a decade.
05:45
In architecture, laser weapons that can take out targets on the ground, in the air, on
05:51
the seas, and even in space.
05:53
A mix of high-performance guns, missiles, AETP engines capable of subsonic, transonic,
05:59
and supersonic flight that cost over $6 billion to develop.
06:03
Loyal wingmen, top-of-the-line electronic warfare countermeasures, avionics, and communications
06:08
are only some of what to expect on the NGAD fighter.
06:11
But despite these advancements, decades of history have taught the U.S. that an aircraft
06:16
will always have room to be better no matter how advanced it already is, especially with
06:21
near-peer adversaries becoming more near-peer by the day.
06:24
As a result, the NGAD fighter will come with an open architecture that enables the fighter
06:29
to take on new upgrades easily and quickly.
06:33
This way, the fighter will constantly adapt to newer challenges of the battlefield that
06:37
are introduced by the advancements of opposing militaries.
06:40
To put it simply, the 6th generation NGAD fighter can be upgraded to become the 7th
06:46
generation NGAD fighter years after it's fielded.
06:49
Advanced Sensors and Weapons The NGAD fighter's immediate surroundings
06:53
will be miles wide, as it would be capable of spotting targets, friendlies, and points
06:58
of interest from tens of miles away.
07:00
This capability enables the fighter to double as a surveillance, reconnaissance, and target
07:05
acquisition aircraft.
07:06
The sensors that make this possible come with maximum connectivity and thus the ability
07:11
to share its data with every other member of the fleet, whether 6th generation or not,
07:16
keeping every member of the U.S. fleet abreast of relevant information in real-time.
07:21
The U.S. would do away with radars mounted on aircraft to electronically configured smart
07:26
skins integrated into the aircraft's fuselage.
07:29
This results in increased sensor sensitivity as well as network adaptability.
07:34
It also aids with communication across the fleet and ultimately enables remote control.
07:39
As a result, the NGAD fighter is designed to be optionally manned depending on the requirements
07:44
of the mission.
07:45
Moving on from systems to weapons, the NGAD fighter is armed to the teeth with the widest
07:50
array of the most advanced American guns, bombs, missiles, and laser-directed energy
07:55
weapons.
07:56
All of these capabilities and more would make the U.S. Air Force virtually invincible, but
08:01
not just them.
08:02
The Navy, too, would like a piece of the 6th generation fighter pie.
08:06
The new 6th generation fighters would replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet from the Navy and
08:11
as said earlier, will replace in the Air Force the F-22 Raptor.
08:15
And although the Air Force has made this clear, there are discussions questioning this move
08:19
and making it a controversial one.
08:22
For some, the F-22 shouldn't be replaced and should simply fly alongside the NGAD fighter
08:27
like the more intelligent, less expensive, and newer F-35 will.
08:31
Understandable as this argument might be, there are valid reasons why the immediate
08:36
future of the F-22 isn't in the sky.
08:40
Future of the F-22 Raptor
08:43
Every era comes to an end at some point.
08:45
The F-22 Raptor will always be remembered as the fighter that changed the world.
08:50
The first 5th generation fighter jet, the first stealth fighter, the indomitable king
08:54
of air superiority even to this day, and so on.
08:58
The F-22 Raptor is a highly effective special weapon to the US Air Force.
09:03
So special in fact that there's a federal law in place that prevents it from being sold
09:06
to any country across the globe, not even to allies of the United States.
09:11
The F-22 Raptor was truly everything the US needed.
09:15
But times have changed, the battlefield has evolved, and the US, once alone in fielding
09:20
5th generation fighters, now must compete with 5th generation fighters from other nations
09:25
such as the Su-57 Felon from Russia and the J-20 from China.
09:30
And while the F-22 could reportedly best these foreign fighters, it's simply less daunting
09:34
to take out 5th generation fighters with a new 6th generation NGAD fighter that performs
09:39
the F-22's air superiority job better than the F-22 ever could.
09:44
Better than any fighter ever could.
09:47
The NGAD fighter is designed to be a wonder, to be one reason non-allies would think twice
09:52
about attacking the US, and then erase such thoughts.
09:56
It will be the aircraft version of a nuclear weapon with unimaginable power.
10:01
And finally, it is the aircraft that would like you to subscribe to this channel and
10:06
give this video a like.
10:07
So do that now, and thanks for watching.
