Following his four-year, $30 million contract extension, Payton Pritchard delivered a 26-point performance, aiding the Boston Celtics in their 114-106 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday. This game marked the preseason debut for both teams. Jrue Holiday, having joined the Celtics just last Wednesday, spent 21 minutes on the court with the second-string players as he familiarizes himself with the team, as noted by Coach Mazzulla. Holiday, shooting 2-for-10, seemed to be working off some initial rust. Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon from CLNS Media provide a detailed recap of the evening's events from TD Garden.

00:00 The Garden Report is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS
00:04 Media Network.
00:05 Hey, Bobby Manning here.
00:08 Welcome to a Garden Report back at TD Garden with Joe "Sway" Pavone here in the Celtics.
00:14 Warm welcome back from the fans and also the crowd here for this one and a win over the
00:19 76ers.
00:20 Of course, no James Harden, no Joel Embiid, so expected win, but one where I think they
00:26 saw some good things and as Joe Mazzuola emphasized during the week, went with a starting lineup
00:32 that's tough to glean from.
00:35 Derek White starting with the Jays as well as Al Horford and Christas Porzingis.
00:41 Not obviously the lineup we're going to see on opening night with Drew Holiday coming
00:44 off the bench for an up and down performance where defensively I thought he was really
00:49 good, three steals here, but struggled to shoot from the field.
00:52 I believe he started two for ten, that's what he finished at actually.
00:56 So overall your impressions of Drew and why did he come off the bench you think?
01:01 Well, Mazzuola talked about how he just joined the team last week.
01:04 I mean the trade happened the day before media day, so maybe there's a little bit of that.
01:07 I mean some of the guys are just much more comfortable with each other because they had
01:11 been practicing or at least having pick up games the weeks prior.
01:15 So I think that had a little bit to do with it.
01:17 But honestly, the way I looked at it when I first learned that he was going with that
01:20 starting five was what was it going to do, what was it going to mean for Derek White?
01:24 And I mean that in two different ways.
01:27 One is how he's going to handle a defense like Philly, right?
01:31 When he's the guy who's controlling the offense and bringing the ball up and doing all that
01:34 stuff.
01:35 And also how he's able to perform when he has guys like Porzingis in the mix, right?
01:40 He's never really had a lineup like that.
01:41 When you add Porzingis and Horford, of course you've got the Jays out there as well.
01:45 And seeing how he handled that, I think that's part of it as well.
01:47 If you're Joe Mazzullo, you want to see how he does with that type of in that scenario,
01:51 in that situation.
01:52 I thought Maxey did a good job of pressuring him at particular times.
01:56 He forced a turnover, he forced White to take a shot that maybe he didn't want to take.
02:00 And I think those are the kind of reps that I think will help White as a player overall,
02:04 but specifically as a point guard because he's going to get a lot of those reps.
02:07 I mean, I don't know, like you said, I don't see him as being the starting point guard
02:11 of this team.
02:12 I think that that's a job that's going to go to Drew Holiday when we start the regular
02:15 season.
02:16 He's got to get much more comfortable in that role because he's going to have to take on,
02:19 he's going to have to run the offense a lot when you don't have Marcus Smart around anymore.
02:23 And you don't have someone like Malcolm Brogdon.
02:25 It's a couraging start for Peyton Pritchard, especially when you think about the extension
02:29 and now he has that window of opportunity to essentially play for as many minutes as
02:33 he wants.
02:34 And it's really up to him at this point where that wasn't always the case.
02:37 But I do think this is a big spot for Derek White, all defensive guard who obviously wants
02:41 to become a better player.
02:42 But specifically, if you're the Celtics, you want to see if you can make him a better playmaker
02:46 on the offensive end.
02:47 Yeah, for sure.
02:48 And Holiday didn't get a ton of opportunities to do that.
02:50 You did see White bring up the ball with the first unit, which I think is a little different
02:54 point we've seen.
02:55 I asked Jalen and Jason how Drew's arrival would impact the offense.
03:00 Would he be that point guard, the ball dominant guy?
03:02 Or are they going to continue to kind of be focal points?
03:04 And they both said it would be a mix.
03:05 Brown actually compared how they use Holiday to how they use Smart, which involved quite
03:10 a bit of ball time, but mostly off-ball play.
03:12 And that's what you saw here in this one.
03:14 Playing with the second unit, even, he took that off-ball roll to Pritchard, who scored
03:19 26 points on the ball in this one.
03:21 And it led to some inconsistent results for Holiday offensively.
03:24 You love what he did defensively.
03:25 You saw the potential.
03:26 And they even tried out the zone that we've all been waiting for for a few minutes there
03:31 in that second half when they got Holiday out there with the starters.
03:34 But overall, I was left saying, I wish I saw Holiday with the starters a little bit more,
03:39 because that's who he's going to play with.
03:40 That's who he needs the reps with.
03:42 And he just looked out of sorts, offensively at least, with that second unit.
03:46 Now, defensively, he's always going to be impactful.
03:48 And you saw the potential of him playing off the ball and helping and switching and doing
03:52 all those things tonight.
03:53 Yeah, no question.
03:54 And I think that's going to be part of what's needed out of him as well, to blend in with
03:58 that second unit and help guide those guys, especially on nights where they might not
04:02 have it.
04:03 If Pritchard doesn't have his shot falling, Sam Houser, I know it's preseason, but put
04:06 up a goose egg in this one.
04:07 You hope that's not going to be the norm for someone like him.
04:09 I think he's someone else that has an opportunity to create a role off the bench, just being
04:13 that sharpshooter who can give you some of the effort on the defensive end.
04:17 Because this second unit has to be those guys that kind of stop the bleeding or just sort
04:21 of maintain the flow of the offense.
04:24 And Drew Holiday has a lot to do with that.
04:26 But yeah, I would like to see him be the starting point guard of this team.
04:29 But it's cool to see him in the mix with those guys and see how he's able to affect the defensive
04:33 side of things when he's with the second unit.
04:35 Here's Holiday talking about his first game in Boston.
04:37 How did it feel to get out there and play with a little more squad and see how it goes?
04:42 Yeah, it felt good.
04:43 The crowd's crazy.
04:44 The energy in the building is crazy.
04:48 First preseason game.
04:49 So it was fun to get out there and just kind of get my feet wet.
04:50 Is it kind of weird to think that a lot of everything that's happened, I guess, over
04:51 the past week has happened?
04:52 I think I'm over it at this point.
04:53 You know, just trying to focus on the season, trying to get acclimated and honestly go out
04:54 there and have fun.
04:55 So yeah, I'm excited.
04:56 I'm excited to get out there and play.
04:57 I'm excited to get out there and play.
04:58 I'm excited to get out there and play.
04:59 I'm excited to get out there and play.
05:00 I'm excited to get out there and play.
05:07 I think it's kind of past.
05:08 I've been going through a whirlwind here, just trying to figure out names and plays
05:12 and schemes and all that.
05:13 So it's been fun, man.
05:14 What is the hardest part of acclimating a new squad like this?
05:17 I think, oh, the squad, that's actually fairly easy.
05:21 Really smart players that make the game easy for me.
05:25 I know I got a lot of wide open shots and got to knock those in.
05:27 But a lot of smart players, a lot of great talent.
05:31 So that's probably the easiest part.

05:48 Win or lose.
05:49 So you can tell he just wanted to get comfortable tonight.
05:52 He just wanted to get some shots up.
05:53 He loved the crowd.
05:54 He just soaked in the environment for sure, especially coming off the bench.
05:57 Him and Porzingis.
05:58 So I'm sure we'll see him back with the Stars before long.
06:00 In fact, he told me later in that conversation that it's just going to naturally happen throughout
06:05 the course of the preseason here as he gets more involved.
06:08 They wouldn't be stunned if it's tomorrow and they make him go a little bit longer with
06:10 some other guys sitting against the Knicks.
06:13 But for you right now, seeing what you saw tonight, what makes most sense, most nice
06:17 from a starting lineup perspective?
06:19 From a starting lineup perspective, I like the double big.
06:22 I like that intimidation factor to set the tone.
06:25 The double block was awesome.
06:26 Yeah.
06:27 I mean, we hope that's something that can happen more often when you have those guys
06:31 out there.
06:32 But I also think it's a great way to display what these guys can do on the defensive end
06:38 of the floor, especially when they're both out there.
06:39 Where you look at the course of their career, most of the time, they were sort of the anchor
06:44 of that front court.
06:45 And I feel like now that you have another guy, if you're Porzingis, you have someone
06:48 like Horford that can help you.
06:49 And if you're Horford, you have a younger guy, and Porzingis, who's 7'3".
06:53 And remember me today, he couldn't get-- not that he was shocked that he was-- how big
06:57 he is at 7'3", but he's like, man, he's like a real 7'3" center.
07:01 Horford said he might be taller.
07:03 Right.
07:04 He's not one of those guys who is like, oh, they listed him higher than-- no, he's a real
07:08 7'3", as he put it.
07:10 And I think Al knows exactly what that means for a team like this.
07:12 Yeah.
07:13 My only concern, though, with the double bigs-- and that's the direction I'm going to-- is
07:17 leaving White on the bench.
07:18 Does he play a little more tentative there?
07:19 Obviously going to get keyed in on more in that second unit without both Jays out there
07:24 and maybe Porzingis on the bench for some of those lineups.
07:27 So we know it's probably going to be back committee.
07:30 That's a challenge.
07:31 I don't think a lot of teams do that regularly.
07:33 And Horford, it will be a change for him coming off the bench, if that is the direction they
07:37 go.
07:38 We'll see how that evolves as the preseason progresses.
07:40 Of course, Joe told us not to look too much into this lineup here tonight.
07:44 So we'll save it for another day.
07:46 We only have to wait one more day to see this team play again.
07:49 Next Celtics tomorrow.
07:50 That's right.
07:51 We'll both be down there.
07:52 We'll both talk after the game.
07:53 And John will be back on postgame as well.
07:55 So I'm sure everyone's excited for that.
