In northern Guatemala, drought is threatening an unprecedented food crisis that is putting 3.5 million people at risk. The Indigenous people of the region are learning to make the most of the insufficient rain, but their crops have been devastated. "I envy the people who have water, I really envy those people (...) What suffering," says resident Maria Baten. Climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon in 2023 have exacerbated the issue. In other parts of the country, people are facing the opposite problem with recurrent storms ravaging communities. International organisations consider Guatemala to be among the ten countries in the world most vulnerable to climate change.
