The US has said it is “deeply concerned” about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding the Indian government’s ‘potential role’ in the fatal shooting of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The US urged the Indian government to cooperate with the Canadian investigation to ensure that “those responsible are brought to justice”. “We continue to be deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau and we remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners and it is critical that Canada’s investigation proceeds and perpetrators be brought to justice, we also have publicly and privately urged the Indian government to cooperate in the Canadian investigation...” said US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel. Patel made the remarks during the US State Department’s daily press briefing on October 03.

00:00 we are and continue to be deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime
00:06 Minister Trudeau.
00:07 We remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners.
00:10 We also have, as we've previously said, publicly and privately urged the Indian government
00:17 to cooperate in the Canadian investigation.
00:20 I wanted to ask you about your thoughts, the administration's thoughts, about the apparent
00:27 escalation in this India-China, I mean, India-Canada dispute.
00:35 So Matt, I don't really have anything new to sort of offer on this that both Matt and
00:43 the Secretary haven't spoke to already, I would say, in the number of times that has
00:49 come up before the press in the past week or so.
00:52 I would just reiterate again, we are and continue to be deeply concerned about the allegations
00:58 referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau.
01:00 And we remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners.
01:04 And it's critical that Canada's investigation proceed and the perpetrators be brought to
01:10 justice.
01:11 We also have, as we've previously said, publicly and privately urged the Indian government
01:17 to cooperate in the Canadian investigation and cooperate in those efforts.
01:24 Yeah, but are you not concerned that if Canada reciprocates in terms of mass expulsion of
01:33 Indian diplomats from Canada, that this will trigger a kind of an avalanche type effect?
01:43 So I --
01:44 And are you not concerned that that could impact your Indo-Pacific strategy?
01:48 I've seen the reports on the diplomatic staffing levels for the Canadian High Commission in
01:54 New Delhi, but I don't have anything further to offer on those reports and certainly don't
02:00 want to get into hypotheticals and take this process one step at a time.
02:07 As it relates to our Indo-Pacific strategy and the focus that we continue to place on
02:14 the region, that effort and that line of work is going to continue.
02:19 And of course, with India, we are partners with them in the Quad and in many other fora,
02:27 and we continue to work with them and other countries in the region on a number of important
02:31 issues.
02:32 And as I said at the top of this, we take these allegations very seriously and we continue
02:37 to not just work closely with our Canadian partners, but have, as I said, publicly and
02:43 privately urged the Indian government to cooperate with Canada also.
