Hungarian scientist Katalin Karikó and American researcher Drew Weissman have been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their pivotal contributions that paved the way for the development of highly effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. Thomas Perlmann, the secretary of the Nobel Assembly, made the announcement in Stockholm. The Nobel panel highlighted how their groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of mRNA's interaction with the immune system, ultimately accelerating the rapid development of vaccines during the global health crisis. Both scientists expressed being ""overwhelmed"" upon learning of their Nobel Prize before the official announcement. The Nobel Prizes carry a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million), with this year's increase due to the devaluation of the Swedish currency. The laureates will be honored at ceremonies on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, with the peace prize ceremony in Oslo and others in Stockholm.
