The Indian government has told Canada to withdraw dozens of diplomats from the country. Ottawa has been told by New Delhi that it must repatriate roughly 40 diplomats by October 10. The Indian government is yet to issue a statement on the latest development. According to reports, Canada has 62 diplomats in India and India has said the total should be reduced by 41. The diplomatic relationship between New Delhi and Ottawa saw its lowest point after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government could be behind the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

00:00 If his government had anything relevant and specific they would like us to look into,
00:06 we were open to looking at it.
00:07 This has been an issue of great friction for many years with Canada.
00:14 In the latest development in the India-Canada row, reports have emerged claiming that the
00:18 Indian government has told Canada to withdraw dozens of diplomats from the country.
00:23 According to reports which cited people familiar with the demand, Ottawa has been told by New
00:28 Delhi that it must repatriate roughly 40 diplomats by October 10.
00:32 The Indian government is yet to issue a statement on the latest development.
00:36 According to reports, Canada has 62 diplomats in India and India has said that the total
00:40 should be reduced to 41.
00:43 The diplomatic relationship between New Delhi and Ottawa saw its lowest point after Canadian
00:47 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently alleged that the Indian government could be behind
00:51 the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
00:54 Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, was shot dead outside a parking lot outside a
00:58 gurudwara in Canada's Surrey in British Columbia on June 18.
01:02 Trudeau, during a debate in the Canadian Parliament, alleged Canada's national security officials
01:07 had reasons to believe that agents of the Indian government carried out the killing
01:11 of Nijjar, who also served as the president of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara.
01:15 However, India has outrightly rejected the claims, calling it "absurd" and "motivated".
01:20 The Indian government has said that Canada has yet to provide any public evidence to
01:24 support the claim about the killing of Nijjar.
01:27 Indian External Affairs Minister S.J. Shankar recently said that the ongoing problem with
01:31 Canada has been there for some years because of the permissiveness of the government regarding
01:35 terrorism, extremism and violence in the country.
01:39 Yes, the Canadian Prime Minister made some allegations initially privately and publicly.
01:47 And our response to him, both in private and public, was that what he was alleging was
01:55 not consistent with our policy and that if his government had anything relevant and specific
02:04 they would like us to look into, we were open to looking at it.
02:09 Now that's where that conversation is at this point of time.
02:16 But to understand that conversation, you have to also appreciate that this has been an issue
02:24 of great friction for many years with Canada, in fact going back to the 1980s.
02:32 Then it became dormant, but in the last few years it has come back very much into play
02:39 because of what we consider to be a very permissive Canadian attitude towards terrorists, extremists,
02:49 people who openly advocate violence.
02:53 And they have been given operating space in Canada.
02:59 On Monday, the US said that the Joe Biden administration has engaged with the Indian
03:02 government on a number of occasions, urging them to cooperate with Canada in its investigations
03:07 into the death of Singh Nijjar.
03:09 The issue was raised by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his meeting with Jaishankar
03:13 last week.
