Brit Selwood opens up on brutal baby journey: ‘So many complications’

Brit Selwood, wife of former Geelong captain Joel Selwood, has spoken publicly about the couple's painful journey to become parents. Selwood revealed that she underwent 11 rounds of in vitro fertilization treatment before becoming pregnant with their son, Joey, who was born in February this year. Stream it all for free on 7plus Demi Duncan, the wife of Joel's former teammate Mitch Duncan, hosts a podcast about parenting with her business partner Melinda Baxter, whom they interviewed with Selwood this week. “We had about seven months and started to think, ‘Oh, this isn't happening,’ but because we were in the AFL hub couldn't really get tested ,” Selwood explained. “We went back got tested and was literally New Year's Eve, we got the result that Joel had a low sperm count, so we went talked to my obstetrician, my gynecologist; He said, "You can keep trying, a year, may take six months, five years. I don't know the answer, but if you want to speed it up, you can have in vitro fertilization." The special needs teacher said her job was something that kept her going through tough times in IVF. "I think had a pretty good headspace, I have pretty basic emotions, don't give out much information, not too excited, I'm not low, just steady," he said. “My coping mechanism was school… I loved going to work, with the kids, being a good role model for them, a constant in their lives. “School has always given me a good perspective, I've seen a lot of things in my work I'm incredibly grateful for the position I'm in and incredibly grateful to be their teacher raise them.” Brit describes the heartbreak of not wanting to discuss where she is in her IVF cycles because it's too painful to talk about.
