A Radical SUV, New Nissan Hyper Urban Concept Introduced

Nissan Hyper Urban concept previews the design and technological capabilities of the brand's future electric vehicles

Nissan has unveiled the first of a series of electric concept vehicles it will unveil at the Tokyo Auto Show, known as the Japan Mobility Show, later this month. Called the Nissan Hyper Urban, this first concept is a radical SUV designed for "urban and suburban-centric professionals who prioritize environmental sustainability."

The automaker says the Hyper Urban previews the design and technological capabilities of Nissan's future electric products. The exterior design is a striking departure from the current Nissan Ariya electric SUV, dominated by angular lines and surfaces that make us wonder if Nissan designers were studying Hyundai's latest designs.

Things start at the front end, where the Hyper Urban sports a full-width LED light bar and a sharp fascia that's completely free of bends. Next, there's a gloss black bumper that contrasts with the lemon yellow paint, which Nissan says "changes chromatic expressions depending on the angle at which light hits it."

Looking at the concept from the side, it appears to be an interesting four-door with butterfly doors at the front and suicide-butterfly doors at the rear. Obviously, such a design would be extremely impractical in the real world, but it is a concept after all. The rear of the concept is dominated by an LED light bar and an angular fascia.

The interior of the Hyper Urban is as striking as its exterior, but at this stage Nissan has only released a single photo showing the rear of the cabin. In this photo, we can see that the concept is equipped with lounge-like chairs complemented by large ottomans and a central screen that rear seat passengers can enjoy. Interestingly, these beanbags are actually part of the front seats and can collapse and fold into the back seats.

Nissan hasn't mentioned what type of electric powertrain the concept has, but says it has V2H functionality and V2G capability. It is also designed to accommodate hardware updates and regular software updates. For example, the cabin could be updated with a new digital instrument panel to reflect "the latest technologies and trends in graphical user interfaces."
