00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 (laughing)
00:16 Tell you what, they're adding up, John.
00:18 They really are.
00:19 Woo!
00:20 - Very true.
00:21 - Had some good conversations this weekend, actually,
00:22 with somebody who's talking to us on this whole matter.
00:26 So we're gonna get somewhere pretty soon here,
00:28 it looks like.
00:29 - I'm pretty excited.
00:30 - I'm looking forward to that.
00:31 It's some exciting news, folks.
00:34 And you guys are all part of it.
00:37 So thank you for being part of The Rebel's Edge.
00:40 We do it four days a week,
00:42 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
00:44 take Friday off for travel.
00:46 I'll actually be traveling today, Pete,
00:48 out to LA for the MD Micro Conference.
00:51 But after this show, after this show,
00:56 Jared is handling the bulls and bears
00:59 that you might see popping up on the screen,
01:01 the odd noises you might hear
01:04 other than Pete burping or something like that.
01:06 (laughing)
01:08 By the way, Jared, I sent you that one of that llama
01:12 or whatever the hell that is.
01:14 (laughing)
01:15 We gotta use that one of these days.
01:18 - We'll get it.
01:19 We don't have it today.
01:20 (laughing)
01:21 - That is one of the funniest things, Pete.
01:25 But anyway, I know you guys are partially tuned in for fun,
01:30 but mostly tuned in so we can break down
01:32 some interesting parts of the trading day.
01:35 So let's get started.
01:37 Macro Minute, Pete.
01:39 I'm gonna say today our macro minute is
01:42 that millions of Americans
01:45 are back to paying off their student loans
01:48 because they got a respite, a break during the pandemic.
01:53 That break stopped September 1st.
01:55 They started charging interest again.
01:57 And today they have to start paying
01:59 or they're in arrears, as they say in the banking parlance.
02:04 And that is gonna be interesting to see
02:08 whether that saps some of the strength of the consumer, Pete.
02:12 - Yeah, I think that will be interesting, John.
02:14 On the other side of that,
02:15 I'd like to just focus on the fact
02:16 that we went into the weekend worried about a shutdown.
02:19 I mean, that was a lot of concern for a lot of people,
02:22 a lot of angst, a lot of, let me tell you,
02:24 you and I already knew this.
02:25 And I said this on Friday and Thursday,
02:28 they're gonna kick the can, man.
02:30 They're gonna push it out.
02:32 And they did.
02:33 And now it's all the way out to what?
02:34 November 17th, I think, John,
02:36 before they actually make the next decision
02:39 to kick it further if they have to.
02:41 So I think that was pretty macro
02:43 because that was a bit of a save.
02:45 I think that would have caused the market
02:46 to have a little bit more of a jump
02:48 or fall or drop or whatever based upon that.
02:51 But because they were able to kick that can,
02:54 now it's back to, well, the Dow's down maybe 100,
02:57 NASDAQ's up maybe 50 or 60,
02:59 and that's the market we're in.
03:01 - Yeah, and I'm shocked, Pete,
03:03 that the market's up a little
03:05 with the 10-year moving back towards 4.7.
03:08 - Yeah.
03:11 - Let's look at fantastic futures, shall we?
03:13 - Fantastic futures!
03:20 I could have said the 10-year, Pete,
03:22 but we talk about it so much.
03:24 And yes, it's up another 2% today.
03:26 And that's not two whole percent.
03:29 That's 2% of a 4.6% instrument.
03:34 But instead, I'm gonna say silver
03:37 because silver just getting smacked down 3.5%.
03:41 You know, it's down 12% in a month, Pete.
03:44 So I thought that would be an interesting, fantastic future.
03:47 - Yeah, I like that one.
03:48 I'm not gonna go to the 2 in the 10-year either, John,
03:50 because we have hit it day after day after day
03:52 for all the right reasons,
03:54 but I'm gonna move it in a different direction.
03:56 How about something that's finally starting to gather
03:58 a little bit maybe, and that's wheat.
04:01 Now, wheat is down, year to date,
04:03 the wheat options are down about 20,
04:07 actually 30%, 29%.
04:09 But today, getting a pretty nice little bit
04:12 of a boost to the upside,
04:13 and I think a lot of that having to do
04:14 with some of the commentary
04:16 from somebody who really does know a lot
04:17 about these various commodities.
04:19 But the reality is this,
04:21 Russia, there's still a lot going on there, John.
04:24 We've got a lot of drought issues still here in the U.S.
04:28 A lot of folks were starting to look past
04:29 a lot of these things.
04:30 That's why they were selling, selling, selling,
04:32 thinking the supply would be good.
04:34 It looks to me like maybe they were jumping the gun
04:37 a little bit, and that's why we're seeing
04:39 a pretty substantial move to the upside today in wheat.
04:41 - That's the fantastic futures for today, folks.
04:46 The first trading day in October.
04:48 Let's jump on some of these stocks
04:51 and/or big movers like Bitcoin,
04:55 because Bitcoin is up about $1,200.
04:59 That's 4.6%.
05:01 Now, host of reasons.
05:03 Number one, we're gonna be making our currency worth less.
05:07 How's that?
05:07 Well, because we're adding to debt,
05:10 like day after day after day.
05:12 We told you how fast we added a trillion dollars in debt
05:16 which is why we're up against the debt ceiling
05:18 and we had to go through that craziness on Saturday.
05:22 But this is a thing, Pete,
05:24 that causes a whole bunch of digital assets
05:28 like Marathon and Riot and so forth to move.
05:31 And guess what?
05:32 We had pretty good unusual activity in those.
05:37 I mean, you look at these two folks,
05:39 there's Riot, Riot Blockchain,
05:42 and Mara, Marathon Digital.
05:44 And just last week, we had both of them
05:46 for unusual activity.
05:48 How's that looking with the stock up 7%
05:51 of each of those two, Pete?
05:53 - And we were coming back, John.
05:54 We actually had a couple of folks here at Market Rebellion
05:57 who jumped on some of those unusual option trades
05:59 'cause that's what they're here for.
06:00 And very, very, very pleased.
06:03 We're talking about 100 plus percent returns
06:05 for some of these guys.
06:06 So, you know, depending on where you bought it,
06:09 all the rest of it,
06:09 but in the case of the folks
06:10 that were actually getting back to us,
06:12 I'd also point out today,
06:13 we're actually seeing even some option paper
06:16 in Coinbase to the upside,
06:17 going right at where it is right there,
06:19 right around 80 bucks.
06:20 So that's another one.
06:22 You know, the idea of potential ETFs and everything else,
06:25 there's a lot of things that are kind of backing up
06:28 and making a little bit of a move, I think,
06:29 right now for crypto, John,
06:31 as we're seeing Bitcoin making this move to the upside.
06:33 As you said, now back over these big numbers.
06:36 You know, it's 28,000.
06:38 Then you start looking towards maybe it's 30,000.
06:40 But they're looking for those big numbers.
06:42 If we get something like that, a move to the upside,
06:44 I think these miners are gonna explode even more.
06:47 - Well, they're certainly worth keeping an eye on folks.
06:51 And right where we are is really resistance and or support,
06:56 depending which side we get above it or below it.
06:59 So keep that in mind for BTC, Bitcoin.
07:02 All right, SDCP, Smile Direct Club.
07:06 Now it isn't just teeth that need straightening out
07:09 or fixing in this case.
07:12 It is that they need straightening out.
07:14 They're filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
07:17 That's not liquidation.
07:18 That's let's reorganize and get back out of this.
07:22 They had just a real problem with some of the,
07:26 like Align, which is their big competitor, ALGN.
07:30 And they were an investor, then they were an enemy,
07:33 and then they were a frenemy.
07:35 Now they're back to being an enemy
07:36 and the stock down 64%, Smile Direct.
07:41 John, this is a great example of what we talk about
07:43 a lot of the time when we talk about certain stocks
07:45 that are in a really bad spot.
07:47 When you look at a company like this particular one,
07:50 Smile Direct, and you look at their debt to cash,
07:53 that's a big number, 850 million.
07:55 When you look at their burn rate of about $80 million,
07:59 that's another big number.
08:00 When you look at the shorts over 20%,
08:03 that's another big number.
08:05 All of this sort of just goes into the pot.
08:07 When you think about it, go back to 2019.
08:10 This was a $18 stock, John.
08:12 You go to 2022, we're looking at a $2 stock.
08:15 You start on it this year, somewhere closer to 41 cents,
08:19 and now here we are at about 16 cents.
08:21 There is a problem, they've had this problem,
08:23 and when you look at that balance sheet,
08:25 they haven't been able to get over the hump.
08:28 And that's something we talk about here all the time
08:30 on the Rebel's Edge is, look at all those shorts.
08:32 Look at the reasons why maybe those shorts are there.
08:35 I think this is a great example of that.
08:37 Interesting company for sure,
08:39 and you talked about frenemies and enemies.
08:41 I gotta tell you something, even a frenemy's an enemy.
08:44 I don't trust 'em.
08:45 So this was a problem for Smile Direct, no doubt,
08:48 and that's why it's sitting where it is right now.
08:50 - Down 88% from its highs, folks.
08:54 So that's pretty much just, it's done.
08:58 How about Arch, Pete, Arch Coal?
09:01 You and I have talked about this one a lot,
09:03 but this isn't one of those steam coal plays.
09:06 This is coking coal, which Pete would also say,
09:09 this is, you know, metallurgic.
09:11 This is what you use if you're gonna be making steel.
09:16 You need coking coal.
09:18 That's what these guys are pulling up, and guess what?
09:21 The demand just isn't there as much for this
09:24 as it is for the ones used to heating
09:27 that would run in power plants and so forth, Pete.
09:30 - Yeah, that's where that coal,
09:31 and you and I talk about it all the time.
09:33 We talked about energy.
09:34 Then we oftentimes will fold in a little bit
09:37 on the nat gas front, but I think the reality is,
09:40 and we've also talked obviously about uranium,
09:42 but when you talk about coal,
09:44 and you were all over this, John,
09:45 I spoke about it today on television.
09:47 I was talking about exactly that
09:49 and how the Asian markets are the demand,
09:51 and the demand is there at record levels last year
09:54 and on pace to have another record year this year,
09:57 but to your point, this is a different coal.
10:00 This is coking coal, so when you look at this one,
10:03 it did have a great run, however, John.
10:05 When you look at the start of July, it was 109,
10:07 got up to 170 just last week, and now today it's down,
10:11 but it's trading about 148.
10:13 This is another one.
10:15 I'd at least keep an eye on this one.
10:16 It's different.
10:17 We're talking about coking coal versus all the rest
10:20 of the different types of uses that you've got it,
10:22 energy space, electricity, and so forth,
10:24 but it's still one where I think at some point,
10:28 they keep pulling back.
10:29 It's not like they actually cut this thing
10:31 and they said to themselves with this guidance
10:33 that everything is terrible.
10:35 They did talk about some challenges
10:37 and they talked about some of the pricing,
10:39 but they kept some of those numbers in line.
10:41 So instead of going higher,
10:42 they were back to the in-line side.
10:44 That's, I think, why people are selling.
10:46 It might not be the right reason to be selling right now.
10:49 - Yeah, that's, I think in the 130-ish area, Pete,
10:54 if you're lucky enough, if it gets there,
10:58 I think you do want to jump back into this one.
11:00 So I join you.
11:01 How about this, Pete, VFS?
11:04 Now this is VinFast.
11:06 This is that company that was bigger
11:08 than Ford and GM put together.
11:10 They're a Vietnamese automaker,
11:12 but these guys were really shrewd, Pete.
11:14 They came public through, I believe, a SPAC.
11:17 I can't remember if it was direct listing or SPAC,
11:20 but they'd only brought like this much of it public,
11:24 free trading, like nothing.
11:26 So they could squeeze like crazy.
11:28 Anybody dumb enough to short it was squeezed
11:31 all the way up, but now it's down 90% since August.
11:36 90%.
11:39 So when you see that, that they're gonna bring
11:42 a whole bunch of shares to market
11:44 because these guys wanted to say, hey, let me cash in.
11:47 So they're trying to cash in now,
11:49 but they're cashing in down 90%.
11:53 So on paper, they were really rich.
11:55 Now they're just a little rich.
11:58 - This is where bad guys do the wrong thing
12:00 and they got caught and the whole thing, right?
12:03 We're talking about a stock, John,
12:04 that traded from $9 to $90.
12:07 And now here we are, it's trading at $10.
12:09 So these insiders, they need to sell, they're gonna sell,
12:13 but boy, to your point, it's a lot different
12:15 than it was not too terribly long ago
12:17 when this stock was considerably higher.
12:20 So it shows you, you know, the pigs get fat,
12:22 the hogs get slaughtered.
12:23 They're gonna make something,
12:24 but it ain't even close to what they were thinking
12:26 they were gonna be making on this trade, John.
12:29 - Yeah, this is, you know, EV space out of Vietnam, great.
12:34 You know, I'm sure they're gonna sell a lot of the vehicles
12:37 that people need over there.
12:40 And they might even export a few, Pete.
12:42 They gotta get past our safety standards,
12:44 which is much tougher, I suspect.
12:46 But yeah, this was just, they tried to play a game
12:50 and it didn't really work out for them.
12:53 (laughing)
12:54 - It worked for a few days.
12:55 - It worked for a while.
12:56 (laughing)
12:58 - All right, what do you got
12:59 as far as the NFL this week, Pete?
13:01 - All right, John, so here's what we got for the NFL.
13:03 We're about a quarter of the way through, right?
13:06 Now we've played whatever, four games.
13:08 But I just wanted to throw out to you,
13:10 it'd be kind of fun kind of to just talk about
13:12 a little bit about, okay,
13:13 who are the top five teams right now?
13:15 Who's the worst team right now?
13:17 Who's the most disappointing teams right now?
13:19 So I'll give you disappointing
13:21 with Cincinnati and the Chiefs.
13:23 Now I know the Chiefs are three and one,
13:25 but John, they got beat week one against Detroit.
13:28 That was not supposed to happen.
13:29 By the way, that was in Arrowhead.
13:32 Then they actually go out there
13:33 and should the Jets have probably won that game?
13:36 - Yes.
13:37 - Yesterday, yeah, I agree with you.
13:39 They just don't look like the Chiefs of last year to me.
13:43 They just don't.
13:45 There's been something there
13:47 that just looks a little bit different.
13:48 They're a little more vulnerable.
13:50 Cincinnati, that's one where I just
13:52 can't quite figure it out.
13:53 They have one good week and then they go terrible.
13:56 And then they have an okay week.
13:58 I mean, I think Joe Burrow
13:59 is one of the better quarterbacks in all the NFL,
14:01 but they don't look all that great this year either.
14:03 Your Chicago Bears are the worst team in football.
14:05 Let's be honest.
14:06 Those guys lost to the Denver Broncos for God's sakes.
14:10 I mean, you actually looked like a pretty good team
14:13 for half of that game.
14:14 And then the collapse started to come.
14:16 But of the good teams, I'll give you right now,
14:19 49ers, unbelievable.
14:21 Offense, defense, everything, right?
14:23 I think the Lions are right after them.
14:24 I think the Buffalo Bills after week one against the Jets.
14:29 And you know what?
14:30 Week one, when you don't play in the preseason,
14:32 that's understandable.
14:33 You might have a great game, but you might not.
14:35 Maybe you're not ready for it.
14:36 And that's what I think Buffalo was.
14:38 They just weren't ready for the game, John.
14:40 Then you look at the Eagles and the Ravens.
14:42 I think those are your top five.
14:44 But when you look at the 49ers,
14:47 they pretty much are in the top five
14:48 of just about every good category in football.
14:51 Offensively and defensively.
14:54 So they are my number one.
14:56 They're the team nobody wants to play.
14:58 The Eagles are great, like you say, Pete.
15:01 But nobody wants to play the 49ers.
15:03 And yet, unfortunately, some of the lower teams in the league
15:09 are going to have to play them.
15:10 But the worst is the Bears with Carolina very close second.
15:16 And you know what?
15:18 Denver is horrible, too.
15:20 The Broncos are horrible.
15:22 And that's why we joked about it being relegated.
15:26 That they should have to relegate the stupid--
15:28 the worst teams in the NFL, Pete,
15:31 should have to be relegated down to indoor football
15:34 or into spring league football or whatever
15:38 and bring up one of those other teams.
15:40 Because this team is terrible.
15:43 Coaches are terrible.
15:45 The defensive coordinator was having a breakdown.
15:49 So he quit.
15:50 Quit football altogether.
15:53 Just said, I'm just not doing this anymore.
15:55 I mean, yeah, the Bears are the worst.
15:57 There's no doubt about that.
16:00 And I agree with you about Casey is not the Casey of last year.
16:04 Doesn't mean Mahomes can't pull it out.
16:07 Kelsey's still very, very good.
16:09 But Taylor Swift is a distraction.
16:12 All those commercials are a distraction.
16:15 I will be shocked, Pete, shocked, if they can repeat.
16:19 I think they'll get through to a fairly high level
16:22 in the playoffs.
16:23 But I don't know that they can repeat with this many
16:26 distractions out there.
16:28 Yeah, I don't disagree with you.
16:30 By the way, you might not have seen this one, John.
16:32 And I just decided to kind of gloss over it.
16:35 But the XFL and the USFL have now merged.
16:38 So could one of the better teams there beat the Chicago Bears,
16:42 I guess, would be--
16:43 Oh, hell yeah.
16:45 I agree with you, by the way, because that's
16:48 how bad they really might be.
16:49 All right, on to--
16:51 Just as long as Fields is anticipating
16:54 where the receivers are going to go,
16:56 even though he knows the route isn't sending them there.
16:59 Because he said that in the press conference yesterday.
17:02 He said, well, you know, he's supposed to float.
17:04 And he did what he was supposed to.
17:05 But I thought he might do this.
17:07 And it's like, why?
17:08 They're having a hard time, John.
17:13 We all know it.
17:13 I mean, it's just a struggle.
17:15 And I thought they could have improved
17:16 with what they did in the offseason, what
17:18 they did in the draft.
17:19 They did not.
17:20 And they got rid of a running back that's
17:22 now a superstar with Detroit right in that northern--
17:25 I mean, honestly, what in the world?
17:28 All right, so next we're going to hit a little bit of college
17:30 football, John.
17:30 Now we're five weeks into the season here, right?
17:33 Who do you think-- who's separating away?
17:36 And I'll give you one team that I think, coming into this year,
17:40 they were probably considered to be very good.
17:42 But I think they're more than very good.
17:44 But we'll find out this weekend, Texas.
17:46 I watch that team.
17:47 I see that quarterback.
17:48 The quarterback looks like somebody
17:50 who could be playing on Sundays.
17:52 So that quarterback is great.
17:54 The running game, pretty outstanding.
17:56 They've got one guy who's just absolutely incredible.
17:59 And then they've got two receivers and a tight end,
18:02 John.
18:02 So offensively, I think Texas could be one of these--
18:06 I don't know.
18:06 I guess they're not necessarily a sleeper.
18:08 But everybody talks about Georgia.
18:10 Everybody talks about Bama.
18:11 Everybody talks about USC.
18:13 By the way, USC, more and more, even though they're winning
18:17 and they're 5-0, they just don't do it in an impressive way.
18:21 I don't know what's wrong with that team.
18:24 But for all the talent they've got,
18:26 and a Heisman caliber quarterback,
18:29 and everything else, I can't quite figure them out, John.
18:32 But so who do you-- do you have any team
18:34 that you think is a little bit of a surprise team out there?
18:36 Maybe it's Oklahoma.
18:38 I don't know.
18:38 But who do you look at?
18:39 Is it Ole Miss?
18:41 It is Ole Miss, Pete.
18:43 I like the way Ole Miss plays.
18:45 I like the way Oregon State mopped up
18:47 on a really good team.
18:50 Oregon State was tough.
18:52 And the Utes are usually a team that gives you a real fight.
18:57 That wasn't the case this time.
19:00 But Pete, I texted you about the tight end from Georgia,
19:06 who was just a beast again.
19:10 The guy's 6'4", 235, runs a 4'5" 40,
19:14 All-American Maxwell Award winner--
19:17 is it the Maxwell, Pete?
19:19 It's the Mackey.
19:21 Is it the Mackey?
19:22 The Mackey Award winner last year.
19:24 And it looks like he's going to do it again,
19:26 because that kid is just a beast.
19:30 And he's one of the reasons that they escaped,
19:32 because they could have lost.
19:36 That was a really fired up Auburn team.
19:39 But in terms of USC, I agree with you.
19:44 Caleb threw for, I think, six touchdowns.
19:47 But we both know that the defense at my Colorado
19:51 Buffaloes struggles, and especially without Sanders,
19:55 Pete, because Shakur Sanders' brother wasn't back there
19:59 on the defensive side, because he has a kidney injury.
20:02 And Travis Hunter had that liver injury that was a cheap shot.
20:06 So with those two not there, I think they're very vulnerable.
20:11 And USC took advantage.
20:13 I did see a real grit out of Shakur Sanders and the offense
20:20 coming back to make it basically a seven-point game, Pete.
20:24 They were getting blown out, and they came back to make it--
20:27 what was it-- 41-48?
20:29 That was great.
20:30 I mean, there was a lot to cheer about there,
20:32 and Deion should be proud of the way those kids fought.
20:36 It's also a little something I have to give this to USC, Pete.
20:41 When you go play at altitude, for any of you
20:43 that have never put on pads and had
20:45 to run under a hot sun at altitude,
20:50 you get worn out in the first half.
20:52 And USC looked like they were dragging in the second half,
20:56 Pete.
20:56 But of course, every team that plays at altitude
20:59 has to deal with that, so it's not unique to them.
21:02 But it looked like they ran out of gas.
21:06 But Texas, I think Texas, Florida State looks
21:10 interesting.
21:11 Washington looks great.
21:13 And as you've already said, that quarterback,
21:15 I think the Washington quarterback, Pete,
21:17 is one to really keep an eye on, other than the Texas
21:20 quarterback.
21:21 Those are my top picks right now.
21:23 Yeah, my long shots--
21:25 I shouldn't say long shots, but the teams outside of Texas
21:28 that I love, you mentioned it.
21:30 Washington, Michael Pinnock is unbelievable.
21:32 The guy's got 16 touchdowns, two interceptions, 75%
21:36 completion.
21:37 Not bad.
21:37 Bo Nix, he's got 15 and 1, 15 touchdowns, 1 interception,
21:41 80% completion, John, 80% for the year.
21:46 This isn't just a single game.
21:47 And then Oklahoma, this kid, Dylan Gabriel, is a stud.
21:53 And that's the game, the Red River rivalry or whatever.
21:56 These guys are going to be getting after it.
21:58 That's Texas, Oklahoma.
21:59 That's going to be a big one.
22:01 That's this weekend.
22:02 That should be pretty interesting.
22:03 That's where Texas has to show if they truly are the team
22:07 that I kind of think they might be.
22:09 And if they're not, then maybe Oklahoma
22:11 should be a little bit higher, because they're undefeated
22:13 and look pretty damn good.
22:15 So we'll have to see as the weekend gets a little bit
22:18 closer.
22:18 I got one last one, which is the dark horse.
22:21 Washington State, be careful.
22:23 These guys are undefeated.
22:26 They can put up a lot of points, and they actually
22:28 can play a little bit of defense on top of it.
22:30 But they had a bye this past week, so they didn't play.
22:33 They're still sitting at 3 and 0 or 4 and 0 or whatever.
22:36 But that's a good football team.
22:37 So I think that there's a lot of fun things
22:39 going on in college football.
22:41 And the Pac-12 is driving that fun.
22:45 Yeah.
22:45 Well, like I say, Pete, Oregon State really impressed me also.
22:50 I'm not saying they're a dark horse,
22:52 because they're a top 20 program right now.
22:55 They're number 15, I think, this week.
22:57 But that team played its heart out.
23:00 And that was just a very impressive win, I think.
23:03 Again, against a team that beat USC twice last year.
23:07 I know that was last year.
23:09 It's not this year.
23:10 But that's still a really good Utah team,
23:13 and they made them look silly.
23:15 Yeah.
23:15 Great football team.
23:16 They play great defense.
23:18 They've been a little lacking on offense this year.
23:20 But that Oregon State, John, that big kid from Clemson
23:23 is running the offense pretty nicely out there.
23:25 And they play pretty good on defense, too.
23:27 So they're doing everything right.
23:29 The Pac-12 is dominating this year.
23:32 Yep.
23:33 Well, they're going out in style, Pete.
23:35 Yeah.
23:36 All right.
