Sheffield dentist fears parking restrictions would hit vulnerable patients

Sheffield dentist Richard Brogden says that any return by Sheffield City Council to a proposal to extend the times of bus lanes on Ecclesall Road would have a serious effect on elderly and frail patients who use street parking

00:06 for a long time around the red lines issue on Ecclesall Road, London Road, Abbeydale

00:10 Road. It seemed like you got to a point where things were looking better. You're still concerned

00:15 though aren't you? What are you worried about with what the council's plans are?

00:18 I mean the current plans do alleviate quite an awful lot of our concerns regarding extending

00:24 bus lanes as well as red lines. For us as a practice that we are duty bound to provide

00:32 access to all, we don't think the plans go far enough. We believe that the extension

00:38 of bus lanes at any point in the council's plans will significantly affect patients'

00:43 access. That encompasses all of our frail, elderly, infirm patients. It also encompasses

00:49 families who are struggling for time and they use the parking outside the practice for convenient

00:55 appointments. I think that any extension of bus lanes would significantly affect access

01:02 for us and the other seven dental practices across Ecclesall Road. We ran a recent survey

01:09 amongst our patient base and we found that 79% of our patients still attend appointments

01:13 by car. So clearly if there were any parking restrictions or any increase in bus lane hours

01:19 across both roads, this would have a significant detrimental effect on patient access across

01:24 not only our practice but also other healthcare service providers across both routes.
