Australian universities have been hit hard in global rankings, with only one local institution in the top 50. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings publishes an annual list, comparing and ranking 1,904 universities in 108 countries and territories for 2024. Australia's highest-ranked institution, the University of Melbourne, remained at 34th, while all but one university fell down the rankings. How did Australian universities fare? RMIT University was the only local university to improve its rankings last year; It went from a 301-350 point in 2022 to 251-300 in 2023. The University of Adelaide saw the biggest drop, falling 23 places out of the top 100. Five universities retained their place in the top 100 Melbourne, Monash University, of Sydney, Australian National and Queensland. However, the University of Queensland fell from 53rd to 70th. The highest ranked Australian university still goes to the University of Melbourne, ranked 34th. Why have Australia's university rankings fallen? Associate Professor Gwilym Croucher, from Melbourne's Higher Education Research Centre, believes the COVID pandemic has played a role Australia's decline in performance this sector. "Australia's closed borders for much of 2020 and 2021 had a clear negative impact in terms of reputation, as reflected in ranking performance," he told Times Higher Education. “While many top Australian universities have performed relatively well financially after the pandemic, an overall change in ranking positions may also reflect disruption to teaching and research caused by prolonged lockdowns,” he added.
