Golden Globes Announce New Box Office & Streaming and Stand-Up Comedy Awards

00:00 The Golden Globes has just announced two new categories,

00:03 one for box office and cinematic achievement,

00:05 and one for comedic stand-up special.

00:07 I'm here to talk with my colleagues

00:09 about this new turn of events.

00:10 Okay, let's talk about this new Golden Globes Award

00:14 for cinematic and box office achievement.

00:16 What do you guys think?

00:17 - Tatiana, this is a resurrection of an idea

00:22 that was floated for the Oscars about five years ago.

00:25 - Yes.

00:26 - An idea that was floated and shot down, I should add.

00:28 (Tatiana laughs)

00:29 - Short-lived.

00:30 - Yeah, that's right.

00:30 And some of us really were not crazy about this idea

00:33 in that what bothered me about what was called

00:37 the popular category, introducing that to the Oscars,

00:40 was not so much the idea of honoring the box office,

00:43 but for me, it created this kind of dichotomy

00:47 in our thinking, where we have the quality films over here,

00:51 and then we have the blockbusters

00:53 that the people go to see over here.

00:56 And I think the more that we think about movies like that,

00:58 the more that becomes self-fulfilling.

01:00 We had two incredible examples of how that kind of thinking

01:04 is pretty short-sighted, namely "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie,"

01:08 both films that critics love,

01:09 that have had extraordinary acclaim and excitement about them

01:13 as works of art, and they're also huge hits.

01:17 I think that's where we should be moving in our thinking.

01:19 Having said all of that, I think this category fits

01:21 into the Golden Globes a lot better than it did at the Oscars

01:26 because the Golden Globes is a more kind of relaxed,

01:29 there's a, you know, what the heck,

01:31 let's just do this quality about them.

01:33 - Yeah, "Barbie" fits in more.

01:35 - Yeah, and so I think the way this category's gonna play

01:38 is it's gonna feel like one of those MTV Movie Awards things

01:42 where it's gonna be, let's do the best blockbuster now.

01:46 And why not?

01:47 Let's have a vote for films that are maybe not

01:51 the best films of the year, but are a certain kind of film.

01:54 It just feels to me like it fits into the Globes.

01:57 - I think it's interesting because, like you said,

01:58 "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" are going to fit

02:00 into this category, but we have to think about other films

02:03 that have reached that $150 million mark

02:06 at the global box office, like "Little Mermaid" and "Mario."

02:09 They may not win this specific category,

02:11 but I think in an alternative year,

02:13 we can celebrate those films

02:15 that really brought people together.

02:17 Holly Bailey's performance as Ariel

02:19 was absolutely outstanding, for example.

02:21 And then with "Mario" in particular,

02:23 it was such a huge hit.

02:24 I don't think that many people expected it.

02:26 It brought so many people back to the box office

02:29 at a time when it was still a little bit uneasy.

02:31 We're still recovering from COVID a little bit.

02:34 So I think it'll be a really good category in that sense

02:37 to celebrate films like that in the future.

02:40 - I think you're absolutely right.

02:41 And I think the category really does exist

02:44 to celebrate those films, because ironically,

02:47 in the year of "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie,"

02:50 I don't think we'd want one of those films

02:52 winning this category, because they're good enough

02:55 to compete in the real category.

02:56 - Exactly.

02:57 - So in a way, this category really is for something

03:00 like the "Super Mario Bros." films or "The Little Mermaid."

03:04 - Or how about "Sound of Freedom?"

03:06 Could be "Sound of Freedom's" opportunity,

03:08 which would never otherwise have an opportunity.

03:10 - That could definitely be the dark horse in that category.

03:13 Well, we'll see how daring the voters are.

03:16 - So we also have this new category for the Golden Globes,

03:19 which is best performance by a performer

03:22 in a stand-up comedy for television.

03:25 - I think this is a really interesting category, actually.

03:27 I'm much more interested in this, I think,

03:29 than the box office performance.

03:32 I think when we think about comedy specials,

03:34 some of them can be really stand-out.

03:36 I know Deion Cole, he did a performance

03:38 on the anniversary of his mother's death.

03:40 It had been a year since she had passed away.

03:42 I thought it was really moving.

03:43 I cried, actually, during the special, and I laughed a lot.

03:47 So it was very intriguing.

03:48 It was very dynamic.

03:49 He's such an incredible performer.

03:51 So I really enjoyed that one as well.

03:53 - I think this is a great innovation

03:55 of the Globes to do this,

03:56 because we all know that stand-up comedy

03:58 is really, at its best, a towering art form.

04:02 I mean, there have been so many great artists

04:04 who've worked it, and interestingly enough,

04:06 way back in 1979,

04:08 the very esteemed film critic Pauline Kael,

04:11 her choice for Best Actor of the Year

04:14 was Richard Pryor in "Richard Pryor Live in Concert."

04:18 And that always kind of spun my head around,

04:20 because that is one of the great concert films.

04:22 But what she was saying is not just,

04:24 this is great comedy or profound comedy

04:27 or whatever you wanna call it.

04:28 She was saying, this is great acting.

04:30 And I think that great stand-up comedy is great acting.

04:33 - It's a performance.

04:34 - It is such a performance.

04:35 And I think it's gonna fit into the Globes great

04:39 and really add something to it.
