00:00 When it comes to choosing a wedge,

00:01 there are a couple of options that you can go for.

00:02 You've got specialty wedges, which look quite Berg style,

00:05 and you've also got cavity back wedges,

00:06 and this might be your set wedge,

00:08 or something like this,

00:08 which is a specialty cavity back wedge.

00:10 We've got two particular models here from Cleveland.

00:12 We've got the RTX6, which is a specialty wedge,

00:14 and the CBX, which is a cavity back wedge.

00:16 And we've come down here

00:17 to the Black Bear Golf Club in Florida

00:19 to check them out and show you the benefits,

00:20 how they perform in different situations,

00:22 on the course and around the green.

00:29 The first thing to consider is how these wedges look,

00:31 because they're very different styles of wedges.

00:33 With the specialty wedges,

00:34 they tend to be more of a blade style,

00:36 so that means they're gonna have

00:36 a slightly more compact head,

00:38 they're gonna have a slightly thinner top line,

00:39 they're gonna probably have more sort of sleeker looks

00:41 on the sole as well,

00:42 and they're also possibly gonna come

00:43 in lots of different finishes.

00:44 So if you like a raw finish,

00:46 or you like a black,

00:47 or any other colors of wedges coming,

00:49 then you're gonna have plenty of options

00:50 in that style of wedge.

00:51 When it comes to the cavity back wedge,

00:52 like the CBX here from Cleveland,

00:54 you've got a lot of peripheral weighting around the sides,

00:56 and that's gonna give it a slightly bigger look at address,

00:58 probably gonna have a slightly thicker top line,

01:00 and probably also gonna have a slightly thicker sole as well,

01:02 and that's gonna help with the forgiveness.

01:04 So that's all how these wedges look,

01:05 let's send them on the course and see how they perform.

01:07 So here we are around the green,

01:08 we're just off the side of the green,

01:09 and this is where you're gonna see

01:10 a couple of differences between these two styles of wedges.

01:13 Starting off here with the specialty wedge,

01:15 this has got a slightly thinner sole,

01:17 and these types of wedges tend to also have

01:19 a little bit more grind around the toe,

01:20 so you've got a bit more versatility around it.

01:22 When you put it down here,

01:23 it does look a little bit smaller than the other one,

01:25 but I think what you'll also find

01:28 is that you get a lot more feel from these types of wedges,

01:32 just 'cause you have that blade style of head,

01:34 it just tends to have a little bit more feel

01:36 than some of these cavity back ones.

01:37 Moving on to the cavity back wedge,

01:40 if you've got a set wedge,

01:41 then you probably will have slightly less versatility

01:43 in terms of the sole design,

01:44 they tend to be more standard,

01:45 but some of these specialty cavity back wedges like this,

01:48 Cleveland CBX, do tend to have

01:50 a little bit more shaping of the sole,

01:52 which should give you a little bit more forgiveness.

01:57 Another difference between these two clubs

02:00 is when you come into the bunkers,

02:02 particularly if you've got a set sand wedge

02:04 or the cavity back,

02:06 but maybe even so with these specialty cavity back wedges,

02:08 the soles, because they're a little bit wider,

02:10 they are meant to be played a little bit squarer,

02:12 you probably won't be able to open them quite as much,

02:14 and that means you might have to leave

02:16 a little bit more room in order to land the ball.

02:19 Moving across to the specialty wedge,

02:24 because these are designed for more versatility

02:26 around the green and also in the sand as well,

02:29 it gives you the option just to really open up the face

02:31 a little bit more,

02:32 if that's the type of shot that you like to play.

02:34 Therefore, it's really gonna come down

02:40 to what type of player you are,

02:41 what type of bunk shot you like to see

02:42 as to which of these two wedges

02:44 is gonna suit your game the most.

02:45 And there would be nothing wrong

02:46 in having cavity back wedges at some of the lower lofts,

02:50 and maybe moving into a specialty wedge

02:51 when you get to the really higher lofts,

02:53 when you wanna try and hit these types of specialty shots

02:55 from bunkers or even from heavy rough as well.

02:58 I'm moving on to the longer shots,

02:59 and this is where I think you're gonna see

03:01 the biggest difference

03:02 between these two different types of wedges.

03:04 When it comes to the specialty wedges,

03:06 when you're pitching and hitting full shots into the green,

03:08 when you put it down address,

03:09 you're gonna have a slightly smaller, more compact head,

03:12 and you might like that

03:13 if you wanna control the shape of your shots,

03:15 it's gonna have a slightly different trajectory as well,

03:18 but you may find it probably won't be as forgiving

03:20 as your set of irons.

03:22 (upbeat music)

03:25 Moving on to the cavity back wedge,

03:27 and this is, if you do have cavity back set of irons,

03:29 it's gonna continue that forgiveness

03:30 as you go through the set.

03:32 When you put it down, you've got that slightly larger head,

03:34 and you see that when you put it down behind the ball,

03:36 it's got that slightly larger profile,

03:38 gonna give a little bit more confidence.

03:39 And because of the size of the head and the construction,

03:42 you probably find that it might fly a little bit higher,

03:45 but obviously a little bit more consistently.

03:47 So this is really gonna come down

03:51 to the type of player you are,

03:52 what type of sets of irons that you have,

03:53 and how you see these wedges fitting into it,

03:55 and if you pick the right one,

03:56 you get the best for your long game as well.

03:58 So I hope that's given you ideas

03:59 to how these wedges perform

04:00 in all these different circumstances.

04:02 Certainly, I think if you're the type of player

04:04 who wants a bit more forgiveness,

04:05 and is not too fussed about how much versatility you have,

04:08 then that is where these cavity back wedges come in,

04:10 particularly if you like them at the lower lofts.

04:12 I think if you're a more skilled player,

04:13 and you want the versatility,

04:14 both in terms of the type of shots that you hit,

04:17 in types of the loft and bounces and grinds,

04:19 or even in the types of finishes that you have,

04:21 then that is where these specialty wedges come in,

04:22 as they offer all these things,

04:24 and a lot more for the very accomplished player.
