00:00 Celtics beat is brought to you by fan duel the exclusive wagering partner of the CLN X media network
00:07 What's up everyone hello Celtics beat and you've got it
00:13 So Evan presented this is like the OG crew, which I mean, there's some truth to we've been around for a long time
00:20 We've done this show for a long time. I think if we were truly of the the OG crew
00:24 We'd have to bring Larry Russell in with us. See what he's up to
00:28 Larry and Nick in here, but this is also and Jared Weiss. He was part of it in terms of hosting for a while
00:34 Yeah, this is I guess this is as OG as it gets right now, though. I think I think this is modern OG
00:40 Yeah, you know I but we have done to our credit
00:44 We have done more shows than anybody else in the history of this show and the best ones. That's that's not even debatable
00:51 I love Jared Weiss death is a terrific person
00:55 But I love them all and and love to have Jared on as a guest
00:59 We just prefer the two of us when when we're you know, rocking the host chair, which is great
01:03 You know, we love doing this show. We love having you guys with us
01:05 By all means if you have not already check out the podcast in its, you know, wherever
01:11 I mean you might be watching us on the CLN s YouTube page
01:14 You can always of course go just the audio route if you're in the car
01:18 Walking your dog like ev does or whatever you're out there doing you can subscribe to the podcast wherever you get your podcasts
01:25 And of course rate review all of that good stuff. It is very much appreciated. But
01:29 this is
01:31 An interesting time of year. We're in the ramp up obviously to training camp, which is right around the corner
01:36 And then we'll get an exhibition games real games and on with just the usual
01:39 Season up downs and drama and controversy and injuries and everything else. But right now
01:46 It's I think it's a really good example of people in general people kind of trying to fill time and
01:55 Get your clickbait headlines and figure out what's what and speculate on things that honestly
02:01 We we don't really know about and for the Celtics who have in many ways
02:05 Gone viral over the past week since our last show we have upset the apple cart a little bit this show
02:11 We had Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe with us last week and he dropped a little nugget that Matt
02:16 Didn't may or may not be all too pleased with the Celtics that at one point in time at the very least
02:21 He was pissed about being included in trade rumors and honestly, nobody's heard from Brockton since so we don't know if he's still pissed
02:28 If he's over it if it's all been worked out with Brad Stephenson company behind the scenes
02:32 We just do not know and Gary said as much when I asked him about it
02:36 we do not know because we've not heard from Malcolm and it definitely makes you know, the
02:42 Mediaday all that much more interesting when he gets up there and so we will find out but this has taken on a life of its
02:49 Own in all of the different
02:51 Articles get aggravated. They're aggregated for aggravated and aggregated. There have been segments locally, you know, whether it's NBC Sports
02:57 Boston the talk shows
02:59 ESPN has done segments about it the ringer on and off like it's it all comes we always joke around here Celtic speed always first
03:07 Also all comes back to to CB over here as and and this has been a talking point
03:13 But my question is just to kind of start us off is
03:17 Has gotten out of control has it gotten out of hand is just people weighing in on something that honestly
03:23 Nobody knows anything about because again, no one's heard from Malcolm
03:28 Yeah, it's definitely got out of control without question
03:31 I mean when it when you go from and I'm not trying to say like our podcast is is this ginormous behemoth of a podcast?
03:39 Nor am I saying are we just in you know in consequential at all?
03:42 I think we're in a really good spot
03:44 Where we are but it was really kind of fun and a little humbling to be honest with you to watch everybody just run
03:49 with this story
03:51 Right after we we let it out and it was like when it you like listening back on it
03:56 I knew like I was like right away
03:58 I'm like, well, this is gonna be an easy one to figure out what the title is because I mean your face
04:03 I don't know if you watched it
04:04 I obviously I go back and look and I in I listen and your face when
04:09 Cuz I made him I made a mistake. I made a journalistic mistake
04:13 I went on to a different topic after Gary dropped the original sentence of like in Malcolm still pissed and
04:19 I just went on adjacent Adams wrists like that didn't happen and you were like, oh, I mean we got a realistic
04:25 What did you just say? So we got you know, we clarified a little bit and
04:31 Just everybody, you know aggregated by this person this person this person all of a sudden
04:36 985 AC Sports Boston and ESPN's
04:39 Whatever NBA program they have now everybody's jumping with this and I think because we haven't heard from Malcolm and himself
04:47 We can just basically come up with any scenario that we want to to paint whatever narrative we want to paint
04:54 to for the discussion the truth of the matter is nobody knows anything because
05:01 Malcolm hasn't said anything, you know again
05:04 We we we have these people on our show Adam always pay attention to certain people that are on the Celtics beat
05:11 That's why this show is called Celtics beat. That's why we have the best writers on this show
05:16 So we can talk to them about stuff
05:18 Like if it comes from Gary or four comes from Adam Himmelsbach or you know back in the day Steve
05:24 Opetta I still include Steve in there because he's pretty plugged in still and there are certain guys in
05:30 Certain girls. I will also throw the female perspective in here, too
05:34 Like when they have something from the Celtics, you know, it's legit. And so like when as you watch
05:41 Certain people spin this it's like you really got nothing
05:45 You none of you have anything. We're all just speculating and it has turned into a monster at the end of the day
05:53 I just sort of kind of feel bad for Malcolm because a lot of people are just putting words in his mouth that don't really
05:58 Exist. Well, it's not even just what happened here with what Gary said, you know pissed about the being included in the trade
06:04 Which by the way, I would totally believe like it that doesn't mean that Malcolm Brogdon is not, you know
06:09 Over it or doesn't understand the business or you know, it's just like hey, I was just there for a year. I played well
06:14 I was the you know sixth man of the year. I think we're building something here
06:18 You're gonna throw me in trade talks like yeah, that would aggravate anybody. I wouldn't blame him in the least but it
06:23 Let's not you know, you gotta separate the two you can
06:28 understand
06:29 something and be
06:31 Ticked about it on two different sides and then just kind of you know
06:35 Get over it and move forward because all right, it fell through like your name came up in trade talks
06:40 They more than that. They tried to trade you injury concerns made it fall apart and you're back
06:46 and so you get your crap together and you just
06:49 You know to one foot in front of the other and Malcolm Brogdon seems like by all indications the consummate professional
06:56 so what is kind of I
06:58 Don't know funny to me. Is that it then it goes to another level where you have like Ramona Shelburne on ESPN
07:05 Saying well, maybe it wasn't just the the trade stuff
07:08 You know, I'm hearing that he's pissed about the way the team handled his injury. Well
07:12 how like by by
07:15 Effectively kind of shutting him down late in the playoffs for the last couple of games like it was
07:22 Being remarkably ineffective. So I I find it. I'm not I don't want to doubt her reporting. I don't even know her
07:29 I know obviously she's successful out there, but I just I
07:32 Find it hard to believe that Malcolm Brogdon
07:35 Would be upset with the team
07:38 For putting an inferior product on the floor that includes him when he is not himself and he knows that there was a debate over
07:45 Whether or not he needed surgery in the offseason
07:47 being out there on the floor as
07:50 opposed to chasing a championship I
07:52 Think he understands the way the world works in this respect
07:55 So I don't even know that it's fair to say that he was ticked about that but putting all that aside
08:00 I want to read a little passage here from Adam Hymel's box article you mentioned Adam before
08:05 He is as good as there is on the Celtics beat right now when he writes you listen
08:10 Which is why he does not do a lot of interviews, by the way
08:13 Because he doesn't like to get caught up in all the hot takey stuff. He's he's a journalist
08:17 He puts the facts out there and what he's heard and what the reporting is and we love that
08:21 He comes on with us from time to time. Here's what he wrote
08:24 The Celtic social media team has posted plenty of pictures and videos of these workouts players in Boston's arrival all in on
08:31 There's been no sign of guard Malcolm Brogdon
08:34 Brogdon of course was hampered by a forearm strand during the conference finals last year then in June
08:38 part of the first iteration of the Chris Taps forcing his trade that
08:42 Before that deal crumbled Marcus smart ended up in the three-team transaction instead Brogdon his camp have been quiet this summer
08:48 Members of the Celtics front office have mostly avoided or deflected questions about the sixth man of the year something about the situation
08:55 Just feels off
08:57 But the indications I've gotten are that the Celtics are not
09:01 Considering trading Brogdon any more than they are considering trading any other player his sour ending to last year aside
09:07 It is worth remembering Brogdon's value to the Celtics last year and smarts departure figures to only increase his role
09:12 Media Day is scheduled for October 2nd, which as we sit here is what 10 11 days away and there will be some clarity then
09:20 So I think a very important line that he included in that
09:24 Indications I've gotten out the Celtics are not considering trading Brogdon any more than they are considering trading any other player
09:32 Which tells you Malcolm Brogdon still very much could be traded
09:36 I have heard some whispers that the Celtics are still trying to trade him
09:40 I am NOT saying my reporting is any better than Adam Hibbles box
09:43 In fact, I will tell you the opposite. It is very much inferior to Adam Hibbles box
09:48 However, I have been saying for weeks for months ever since this trade fell apart
09:53 Do not be surprised if the fallout from this situation or potential fallout still leads to Malcolm Brogdon being traded
10:01 I still believe it even though we were sitting here in mid late September
10:06 I still believe Malcolm Brogdon is maybe not actively, you know being
10:11 You know dangled out there by the Celtics, but I think he is absolutely on the trade block
10:18 I firmly firmly believe that where I think it is now more limiting of and I've talked about this too
10:24 Is that now you can't just up and move them you have to get a piece back that is a contributor and a guard
10:31 You need a guard back or you got to get a guard elsewhere because you are thin at guard as it is
10:36 After trading Marcus smart you cannot now trade Malcolm Brogdon and get a wing back
10:41 I just don't believe that's you know in terms of roster construction
10:45 That's something that you can do snap into action this NFL season with fan duel
10:49 America's number one sports book right now new customers get $200 in bonus bets
10:56 Guaranteed when you place a $5 bet that's $200 in bonus bets win or lose if you've been thinking about joining fan duel
11:04 There's no better time to get in on the action. The app is so easy to use
11:08 There's a wide range of betting options including spreads player props over rangers and more
11:14 So visit fan duel comm slash Boston a kickoff the NFL season
11:19 fan duel official partner of the NFL
11:23 You
11:25 Have an open roster spot left, but I want to save that particular tidbit for later
11:34 I want to ask you a question about that particular paragraph or a couple of paragraphs are from Pimmelsbach
11:39 I know we have said on this show already that we all kind of ran with this without really any reporting
11:46 But in Pimmelsbach's piece does any part of that make you think that Malcolm still isn't pissed
11:53 because the way that reads to me is
11:56 We haven't heard anything from Malcolm and it's kind of a bad thing that we haven't heard like we haven't heard anything from him at
12:03 all in
12:05 Reads that it's a bad thing. I think it reads that
12:07 But we don't know Malcolm's not pissed we just don't know I think that's how it reads, okay
12:14 Then I feel like it's Adam saying I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that that Malcolm Brogdon is is pissed off or not
12:21 Or not exactly we don't know and I think it's very carefully worded to say as much right and I think Adam if we had him
12:28 on the show would tell you that
12:30 He it doesn't indicate literally anything and that's the one thing that's Adam is very and even when he's on here with us
12:37 We're gonna have Adam on hopefully later on next couple of weeks or so, but he's always very careful about
12:44 how he words and phrases things and
12:49 Again that reads to me like there might be a little
12:52 Something still there. But again at the same time
12:55 we have we have no idea and
12:58 the phrase of
13:01 He's they're not thinking about trading him any more any less anybody else in the roster
13:06 Well, we all know how the NBA works. That doesn't mean anything
13:07 I mean the only guy that's truly untradeable on the roster is Jason Tatum
13:11 so, you know pretty much everybody's up for grabs if the price is right and if somebody were to call or if
13:17 You know Brad were to call someone and and somebody was interested and they were interested in the same package again
13:22 and then it's things gonna get done, but I
13:24 Honestly don't think
13:31 Because of this elbow injury, I there would have to be certain things in place for another team to trade for Brogdon
13:37 I mean we again we have no idea how that that that rehab is going how that injury has progressed and how it's healed over
13:43 time we have no clue and
13:46 Maybe that's on purpose
13:48 You know
13:48 You think you go back to like the last dance right Scottie Pippen didn't play
13:52 Until like halfway through the year because he was mad at the team for not giving him an extension and he had his injury
13:57 That held him out for the majority of the year right and it created a little dissension amongst the team
14:03 I'm not saying that Malcolm Brogdon is Scottie Pippen here
14:05 But I'm saying that you know
14:08 They have gone radio silent when a little bit of communication would do a whole lot of good to clear some things up
14:14 And it's not like Malcolm's not a pro and his team doesn't understand the value of using the media to help things out
14:19 They haven't spoken maybe for a reason because they want the Southern State to be uncomfortable. I don't know
14:25 I'm just yeah, we're speculating here. I'm throwing things out
14:28 In that vein what you just said, I think that so Malcolm like to be very clear
14:34 Malcolm Brogdon doesn't owe us
14:36 the media or fans
14:39 Anything like Malcolm Brogdon doesn't have to say anything that goes beyond his literal
14:44 Team and league requirements to talk with the media and we're not there yet. We're in the offseason
14:49 But I think what you just said is interesting about whether or not and we again
14:53 We don't know I keep saying we don't know because we don't we don't know what what level of conversation he has had
14:59 Within the team and I don't mean with teammates
15:03 I mean with management with front office with you know coaches all of that
15:09 Has he closed the door on them?
15:10 has he you know boxed them out because again he's upset for one reason or multiple reasons or
15:16 Are they actively in touch behind the scenes and nobody is talking about it?
15:20 but what I do think and you just alluded to this what I what could be interesting is
15:24 You would think with that injury there'd be some level of rehab taking place with the team doctors in Boston
15:32 And if he has not been around at all, and I don't know this to be true
15:37 Doesn't mean every time a guy's around there needs to be a picture on the Celtics Twitter account or X account
15:42 Whatever you want to call it if he has not been around at all in
15:46 months
15:49 That would be something that I would find mildly alarming
15:53 Yeah, I think you'd be right to feel a little alarmed about that
15:56 You know poor zing is everybody gave him a hard time because he was a you know
16:00 Lithuania and not rehabbing with the Celtics there was a time and I thought it was really just stupid
16:05 But people were giving him some people were having a hard time
16:08 Why is it he back in Boston rehabbing with the Celtics doctors make ever bet?
16:12 It's like that doesn't really matter right now. Like he's gonna be back in Boston. Sure. He is back in Boston right now
16:17 We've seen photos of him, you know
16:20 There was one screenshot I think of the entire city. So I might have been taken even from the hour back practice center
16:26 But it's like, you know
16:28 One of these things where he's back with the team now that story that was again
16:32 We were just trying to find something to talk about right?
16:36 We had hit that time of the of the calendar of like man. We're just really struggling for content here
16:40 Whereas this one varies a little differently because we haven't heard anything like again
16:44 We got updates from team Lithuania about his progress and now that he's back in Boston working out with the team
16:50 We don't have to worry about that as much again a little bit and this is again. This is
16:54 Maybe where I have a little beef with Malcolm right now is just because of the the lack of communication where this
17:02 Story has been out there for about a week now again
17:04 our podcast was last Thursday with Gary and everybody's picked up and ran with it since a
17:09 Little just blurb to the media real quick short paragraph something would clear a lot of this up and
17:16 Would give us another talking point to have and then we could just move on with the rest of our lives
17:20 But because we haven't had that yet we sit here and speculate and it's really kind of frustrating
17:25 I'm not gonna lie to you again. Does he owe us that know what it helps and things sure
17:31 Of course, yeah, you need to care about helping any of this stuff
17:35 I mean, he can show up on on media day October 2nd get up there and Malcolm. How do you feel about?
17:41 Well, that's that's gonna be an interesting day. It's it's the you know, that's the business. It's unfortunate
17:47 that's just how it works, but I'm still a Celtic and we want to
17:51 Pick up where we left off and we have unfinished business from last year and Marcus is gone and grants gone
17:56 We have a new look but we believe in our group and our leaders and our talent and I'm excited for the year
18:02 Well, how's how's the the forearm elbow all of that feeling? I healed up nicely in the offseason didn't need surgery
18:09 I'm ready to go right? That's what you're gonna hear more or less
18:12 You know, you're not gonna get any controversial nuggets come out immediate. They never do ever
18:18 I mean unless you have a guy who is is looking to be moved now
18:22 Do we believe market or Malcolm Brockton is looking to be moved as he want to for instance
18:27 Get back to a situation with a team where he can start regularly as opposed to being the sixth man
18:34 Maybe he's unhappy being the sixth man. I have no idea. I don't think he ever indicated that
18:39 he always said the right things about his role on the team and and I I think it probably means something to win an award like
18:47 that
18:47 but maybe it doesn't as much when you came from a place where you were a guy who was starting every game and you know
18:54 Averaging 20 points a game and you feel like you've you've taken a step back and you're filling a lesser role
18:59 I don't know. I've never been in that position
19:01 I will never be in that position short of asking Malcolm Brockton right to his face, which love to do
19:07 we we're not gonna get the answers to those questions about any level of
19:11 discontent that he may or may not have obviously, but I
19:17 You know, I I just think that as far as media day goes you're going to hear
19:21 nothing, but the usual
19:24 The past is in the past
19:26 We're looking ahead and I'm in the best shape of my life kind of fluff that typically comes out of media day
19:32 Oh, I think Jason Tame though might actually be the best shape of his life if you see what he's been doing guys a monster
19:38 He's staying busy. It's like deadlifting 450 like it's nothing. He's he's just
19:44 Let's talk to my buddy about the other day of just you know his
19:47 His workout routine. He's and again
19:50 the thing is he's gonna be able to stay lean but still add like strength and muscle and
19:56 I'm just thrilled for what the next step is for him because as he gets older and more mature and fills out like man
20:03 he's just gonna be a real big problem to deal with then
20:06 You know
20:07 I've been saying the same thing about Jalen like the thing with Jalen that has been
20:11 Glaringly apparent over the past couple years is how much better he has gotten an absorbing contact and finishing through contact at the rim
20:17 You know people might want to complain about the dribble like that's fine
20:20 Go back and watch Jalen have people bounce off him go back and look at last year. It was awesome wrong
20:26 He's strong as hell. So those two guys I love seeing their offseason progress and the work
20:32 They put in the gym like Pierce was talking about it with Kevin Garnett on his show the other day
20:37 About how Tatum's work ethic has gotten him back into working out with him
20:41 Yeah it back into shape and like a little inspired and like Sam Cassell's hanging out and it feels I
20:46 Don't think some of the vibes on this team are like kind of toxic and terrible
20:49 It comes like the product and stuff
20:51 But then there's like some really good
20:54 There's some really good vibes around this team that I really enjoy and then and like just pit like the one thing
20:58 They had that interview
21:01 With Pearson Garnett and smart and Brown and Tatum. I think it's season last year and
21:07 One of the things that they talked about with Joe and I think with Brad I
21:14 Think maybe with Joe, but maybe not. I was with one of the two of them was how
21:19 They think they need to be around the team more, right? It's like, you know, they're like, yeah
21:26 You know when you have Cedric Maxwell in here all the time and you have guys coming through it really reminds you of like
21:31 what you're really fighting for and like what you really put this uniform on for and
21:34 To me it seems like Pierce has taken that and gone to the next step with it
21:40 Like I'm gonna work out with Jason. He's the next he's the next do like he's the next me
21:44 but he's gonna be better than me like I I
21:46 Love that and I love seeing that after
21:49 You know
21:49 What has been a tough offseason for this team and to tough off seasons in a row you lose in the NBA finals and everybody
21:55 Questions whether this team's, you know, really good or not
21:57 You make a couple of tweaks you come back and losing the Eastern Conference finals and you know
22:02 It's a long summer and I think that you know trying to bring some of the past greats in here and trying to you know
22:09 Establish that that brotherhood that camaraderie of being a Celtic I think is a tremendous thing for this team
22:15 Have any interest in news any news? Yeah
22:19 Yeah
22:21 In Celtics breaking news just while we were talking about our our fine sponsors here on the program
22:29 I am not gonna run. Yeah
22:31 What do you create guard forward?
22:34 Stevens has agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics
22:38 Let's tell the Athletic and Stadium Stevens established himself as a defensive presence for the Cavs
22:43 starting in
22:45 25 of 62 games last season
22:48 Agent Scott Nichols completed the deal with Celtics officials. So Stevens got Stevens Brad hasn't been too busy investing in soccer teams
22:56 He's out there still working and he got himself
22:59 Lamar Stevens now we've talked about this one. It's been out there Lamar Stevens TJ Warren
23:04 some of the guys that have been in for workouts with the Celtics we've been on this one for weeks and
23:08 There there was even a little bit of conversation. Who would you rather and we said I believe anyway go back check the tape
23:15 But I believe these words came out of my mouth previously
23:18 between the two
23:20 While I might have preferred TJ Warren for his offensive upside
23:25 The one that felt more likely was Lamar Stevens for his defensive ability. What do you think of this move? I
23:31 Don't like it
23:34 You'll be okay. No, tell me more. I
23:36 Just don't want time. I get I get why I
23:42 Just really like Jordan Walsh and I think this takes away playing time from Jordan Walsh. I think like it's certainly might I
23:49 Get the idea you can never have too many wings in this league, especially guys that could defend
23:53 Boston I think would like to try and get back to some of their defensive prowess that they had when they went to the NBA
23:59 Finals, I mean again, I you and I talked about this you me and Seth had a lot of conversations, you know
24:05 surrounding how good that defense was from
24:07 February till Rob got hurt it was
24:10 Unbelievable. I mean it really was I'd like to need them to get back to that for sure. I just think Jordan Walsh
24:17 I'd like to see him get some real time, you know, and that's the writing of summer league high is what you're doing
24:26 I am but this is the problem. Okay, so use this is when you're a good team like the Celtics
24:30 You have young players on it. Sometimes get the sacrifice
24:33 Wins for playing time or vice versa playing time for wins, right?
24:37 Like ask the Cavs about you know, Moses Moody and Kuminga and you know the young guys that they've brought in
24:44 You know, they traded Weisman away after a while because he wasn't fitting in it wasn't really working out
24:49 You know if you go back and ask them would you do the same thing over again?
24:52 They probably wouldn't because those guys have not brought the return back on their investment for sure again
24:57 You're talking about a team that had Steph Curry
24:59 Draymond and clay and then out of three rookies and try to make that work is really hard
25:04 Boston
25:06 Isn't a little different of a spot than them
25:08 They have I think a little bit more age diversity on their team and the Warriors do but it's still the same time
25:14 I would like the Sam Hauser's the Jordan Walsh's to get some real time
25:20 I mean you and I you more than me, I think
25:23 Pound to the table for more Sam Hauser not just last year
25:27 But the year prior in the playoffs trying to get Sam Hauser some more run on the court
25:31 I feel like that's gonna be me with Jordan Walsh this year
25:35 I'm so excited to see what he brings to the table when he doesn't have to be like in the summer league
25:41 It's hard, you know
25:42 You don't know who the heck you're playing with and you know
25:45 Obviously his role with the Celtics with Jason Tatum over here at jail around over here
25:49 It's gonna be very different from what he's on the court with JD Davison and and J scrub and you know
25:54 Name the guys
25:55 So I want to see what he looks like with some higher-end talent around him and how he could be beneficial because I think
26:01 He has a little bit better feel that I think people are anticipating that being said
26:07 Look Lamar Stevens. I as I said at the time, I think when they were looking at him
26:13 I have not been grinding Lamar Stevens tape. I hate to tell everybody
26:16 I'm not an expert at Lamar Stevens from what we can gather. Yes, very good defensively again
26:21 I believe he's one of Penn State's all-time leading scorers
26:24 Remember correctly. I could not tell you if that's true or not. I
26:29 Tell you he went Penn State. That is my my
26:32 Extensive knowledge of Lamar Stevens the college basketball player. I can tell you some of his NBA facts
26:37 Which is has started 38 of 165 games is right from basketball references is not off the top of my head
26:44 Obviously, he's averaging just better than five. Excuse me five points in about 16 minutes per as far as
26:51 Shooting he's about a 47% fee, you know shooter from the field not a three-point shooter
26:57 He'll get him up from time to time, but only a 28% success rate is you know
27:02 Not the the most adept at the free-throw line either just over 70% gets his rebounds. He's getting 3.3
27:11 in those minutes so as far as you know per 36, he's ten and a half points and
27:16 Almost seven rebounds per 36 minutes, but I think going back to the defense
27:21 Defensive win share which of course basketball reference has
27:27 1.6 last year of his overall 1.9 win share in again
27:31 limited action his
27:34 defensive rating
27:36 111 110 the year before that
27:38 So it's I mean look he's not a great player
27:42 He is a back half of the rotation, you know guy if that he won't even you know
27:48 Regularly play by any means unless there are some you know games that guys are hurt or nights off resting
27:55 Whatever else like he's he's gonna get himself into the lineup here and there and maybe he'll be an energy guy off the bench
28:01 but I I
28:02 Would kind of describe Jordan Walsh, you know, probably the same way so to Evans point could they pull from?
28:08 Another
28:11 entirely possible but
28:13 Neither one was was bound to have a big role on this team this season anyway
28:18 Yeah, so just so we were clear here Lamar Stevens is third all-time in points
28:24 In Penn State history behind Taylor battle and Shep Gardner
28:29 Neither guys. I remember really at all to be frankly honest with you
28:33 But that's you know, neither here nor there
28:35 Yeah, look I just like it. I'm I see the idea more depth in the wings never a bad thing
28:42 Especially guys I can defend you can know it's like you can never have too much shooting on the floor and too much defense
28:46 I think I think that's you know, part of the half the game is stopping the other person from getting a basket
28:51 You know, I think that's that's important especially when two of your high usage players are gonna come on the wing, right?
28:56 You're gonna have to give Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum some time off from time to time
29:00 Although you're gonna want them to play too because you're gonna want to win games
29:02 I just don't have a huge like pound the table
29:06 Take for you. I think again. I think they're looking for depth. I don't I don't think that he comes with one and
29:14 You know, and I think that's fine
29:17 By the way, like you don't have to have these these scorching hot takes on on every you know
29:21 Potential deal like this is this is again a
29:25 back of the bench guy
29:28 Yeah
29:28 and what's funny is I was gonna bring this up in terms of Malcolm Brogdon if they were gonna trade him for
29:33 Not a guard and then sign a guard, you know to that last roster spot
29:38 There was the whole thing with Austin Rivers that came up this week on Bill Simmons's podcast about how he called Brad Stevens
29:45 To tell him like hey, man, like I you know, we've talked before I'm interested in joining your squad
29:49 If you got some room for me and you know, hope you consider me and etc, etc
29:53 I did I you know, Austin Rivers has been an interesting case over his years in the NBA
29:59 I mean you remember when he was in high school. He was this
30:01 ginormous
30:03 Recruit in high school. I mean if you were around
30:05 When again when mixtapes meant something?
30:08 His his high school mixtape was outrageous. I mean and he went to college him to Duke
30:14 It was a huge deal that Austin Rivers went to Duke
30:17 And then, you know, he's kind of bounced around a little bit hasn't really found a footing
30:23 Solidly anywhere and he talked about that
30:26 And now he feels really comfortable in being a bench guy and being a veteran who can help guys and that's something that I'm
30:33 Always gonna be interested in because you know, there's always room for vets to teach guys
30:37 Not just stuff on the court stuff off the court, too
30:40 So I was interested in the Austin Rivers thing
30:43 Especially if it traded Brogdon for something else and they need to get a guard somewhere doesn't that's how this is gonna go down
30:49 I think Stevens is being brought in as a is an extra guy to fill out the rest of the bench
30:54 This is also unfortunately, I think the time we say bye to Blake Griffin. It's gonna be tough. Let's say wait
31:00 And our guy Greenie to barstool Greenie Dan Greenberg
31:05 He's been on the show a number of times due to probably have him back on pretty soon
31:08 he tweeted out that it's you know, does this mean that that
31:12 Banton could be gone with that non non guaranteed contract that he has to you know
31:17 If they're interested in continuing to keep a roster spot open something to keep an eye on again, though
31:22 We talk about the lack of guard depth. I don't know
31:26 I figure you you go into training camp obviously with a
31:29 Meaty roster and and whittle it down from there. You see how guys perform what kind of fit they might have
31:35 I think Bantons a same story
31:38 I I wouldn't see him gone before camp arrives. Anyway, yeah
31:42 I'm just to point out the guard depth thing and just to toot my own horn for just a second because I've been preaching this
31:47 For now the third straight year
31:49 It was so nice to hear Ramona talk about this on ESPN because I've been pleading for this for a long time
31:56 But if she had mentioned in that segment about Malcolm Brogdon that there's a there's some thought process around the team
32:03 That Jason Tatum is gonna play a little more point guard this year and I for one could not be more happy to hear that
32:10 I've been preaching point Tatum on the show forever
32:14 And it is something that eventually you have to find out if he can handle it or not
32:19 and I think over the last two years he's done a really great job as improving as a ball handler distributor and
32:25 Facilitator and a Bobby Manning made a great point about this
32:30 How many superstars the NBA are terrific off-ball players?
32:35 I can name a couple but there's just not a lot of them a lot of the superstars in the league are
32:41 Superstars because they're terrific with the balls in their hands. Yeah, Curry is one
32:46 Kevin Durant's another
32:49 Guys that you could drop them on any team and they would figure it out
32:52 They don't need the ball in their hands to make things happen
32:54 There's just not a lot of those guys a lot of teams are built around
32:58 one player being able to have the basketball in their hands and dictate how the court looks and how the game looks and how the
33:05 games played and
33:07 If this other is gonna lean more into that this season, which I've been begging for for two years
33:11 And they've kind of met me there more that I think is better here for Boston. I think more is better
33:16 All right

33:18 shorter show with just the two of us for giggles been a long time probably since the
