Transcript
00:00 I'm Sean from CinemaBlend.
00:02 Sorry, she's directing you.
00:04 Hey, don't be sorry.
00:06 We all have our side, you know what I mean?
00:08 This one's mine.
00:10 Oh, you're damn right that's your side.
00:12 I watch Endgame probably once a week.
00:24 My favorite line is still
00:26 "You missed the first time,
00:28 then you got 'em both the second time."
00:30 You got 'em both the second time.
00:32 Yeah, that's right.
00:34 Thank you, thank you. Wow.
00:36 How much of this story
00:38 is going to be about the search for Gamora?
00:40 Where is Gamora?
00:42 Yeah, oh, do you want better?
00:44 Who's Gamora? Oh, do you want better?
00:46 Why is Gamora?
00:48 We find Gamora very quickly. Oh, you do?
00:50 Oh, yes. Not like too quickly,
00:52 but you see in the Hall H footage that's where
00:54 we pick up Quill as he's dealing
00:56 with the loss of
00:58 this person who does not know who he is.
01:00 This is all post-blip,
01:02 post-Endgame, and
01:04 the love of his life
01:06 just doesn't know him.
01:08 So he's dealing with
01:10 that reality, and that's
01:12 a really tough place for him to be emotionally
01:14 and leaves the Guardians
01:16 of the Galaxy vulnerable.
01:18 This is the one? Seriously?
01:20 Your choices were him or a tree.
01:22 Karen, how are you?
01:24 Good to see you.
01:26 That looks amazing. Oh, thank you.
01:28 I appreciate that.
01:30 That's an incredible t-shirt.
01:32 I don't know what it is.
01:34 It's Optimus Prime. Oh, sorry.
01:36 You said it as if, like, you should know that.
01:38 Okay, so
01:40 I get one question with you.
01:42 I've always wanted to know this, because I
01:44 watch Endgame, like, once a week. Do you?
01:46 I do, I love it. Oh, it's my favorite movie
01:48 of all time. I watch all the time audience
01:50 reactions to Endgame. Aren't they amazing?
01:52 They're the best, especially when he's like
01:54 Avengers, Assemble, and then the whole crowd
01:56 is like, "Woo!"
01:58 Okay, but here's what I want to know. Nebula killed Nebula.
02:00 Do you deal with the impact
02:02 of that at all? The psychology of
02:04 Nebula killing Nebula.
02:06 I think it was actually a very
02:08 cathartic experience for her, like a positive
02:10 experience. It was like saying goodbye
02:12 to the previous version of who she used
02:14 to be, which was a very, like,
02:16 angry, bitter,
02:18 resentful person.
02:20 And she's, like, making space
02:22 for this new character that has experienced
02:24 love and has the capacity to
02:26 actually show love towards other people.
02:28 Can't wait to see how that develops.
02:30 What's up, buddy? Good to see you, man. How are you?
02:32 You doing alright? Yeah, I'm doing great. Good.
02:34 Yeah, this is so exciting.
02:36 Let's do a great one.
02:38 I want to know if your writing on
02:40 Peacemaker and being able to go hard R
02:42 is going to affect at all the tone of the humor
02:44 you're bringing to the third Guardians, or are they separate
02:46 entities? Totally separate entities. I don't
02:48 ever... I do... I'm completely
02:50 true to what the characters
02:52 are and what the story is.
02:54 And, um, this
02:56 is... this is Darker Guardians. I will
02:58 say it's a much darker movie than the first two
03:00 movies. But it's also
03:02 a, you know, an emotional
03:04 movie. So it isn't darkness without
03:06 that. Uh, it's
03:08 a story about these
03:10 characters who we've come to know very well.
03:12 And, um, and we get
03:14 to really see where they're going and where
03:16 they've been going all along since the beginning
03:18 of this story. Showtime
03:20 a-holes! So the buzz out of the panel
03:22 was, uh, Baby Rocket.
03:24 Yeah. That is true! This is you
03:26 I would assume. Well, yeah.
03:28 I mean, uh, yeah.
03:30 Uh, yeah. That is
03:32 also true! What... what
03:34 can you tell me about this transformation?
03:36 A new toy for you to play with?
03:38 Oh my gosh. It is, uh...
03:40 It is really
03:42 beautiful. It's
03:44 really wonderful that, like,
03:46 how we are incorporating
03:48 Rocket's backstory
03:50 into the story that we're telling.
03:52 Um, and it's, uh...
03:54 It's... it's tricky.
03:56 Well, I didn't ask to get made!
03:58 I didn't ask to be torn
04:00 apart and put back together
04:02 over and over and turned into some...
04:04 some little
04:06 monster! You know, you got a tiny
04:08 animal, and so we're put...
04:10 we're, like, doing our best to
04:12 put that together and portray that
04:14 in a, uh... in a...
04:16 in, like, a conscientious...
04:18 and, uh... in...
04:20 You know. Which is
04:22 hard, but, uh, I'm so
04:24 proud of it. I'm so proud of the work we did.
04:26 Are you crying?
04:28 Hi, Pom. How are you?
04:30 Good, and you? Nice to meet you.
04:32 So, with Guardians 2, you were
04:34 the new member of the family. Yes.
04:36 How did it feel? There's new
04:38 members of the family, and, um...
04:40 and I'm not the new one anymore.
04:42 So, do they come to you and say, "How do we fit in?"
04:44 No, but they fit in.
04:46 We're cool, you know? We just, like, embrace
04:48 them within the family.
04:50 Yeah. How do you recapture that
04:52 vibe when everybody gets back on set?
04:54 Is it just immediately plugged right back into it with everyone?
04:56 Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:58 Of course. I mean, it's just, like, you know,
05:00 we... you know, you enter
05:02 in the, you know, James Gunn's
05:04 music, you know? It's like the...
05:06 you know, his scripts are
05:08 so, so good. I'm so...
05:10 I feel so lucky to be a part of this
05:12 franchise of these movies,
05:14 you know? Can you hint at what we can expect to see
05:16 from Mantis?
05:18 Um... yeah.
05:20 You see her, uh...
05:22 being stronger, being
05:24 louder, and...
05:26 yeah, you see different things.
05:28 And you see some action, too, which is really cool.
05:30 Kick names take ass.
05:32 Yeah, that's right.
05:34 Hey, Will, how are you? Nice to see you, man.
05:36 I'm wonderful. Thank you so much.
05:38 I'm a huge
05:40 Adam Warlock fan. Awesome.
05:42 Cannot wait to see his version in the MCU.
05:44 Oh, cool. What can you tell me about his
05:46 origin? We saw it very briefly at the end of Guardians 2.
05:48 What more can you let me on about?
05:50 Yeah, so, obviously, at the end of
05:52 Guardians 2, his kind of, uh,
05:54 birth, if you like, is teased with that
05:56 cocoon. And, um, you know,
05:58 I gotta be careful, wondering into spoiler territory,
06:00 but I think, uh... I think the...
06:02 the third installment, you know,
06:04 shows him kind of orientating
06:06 himself in the world, you know, trying to work out
06:08 right and wrong, you know, as a kind of
06:10 newborn might, trying to work out the
06:12 rules of the world that he finds himself
06:14 in, and it's kind of a self-development story, which
06:16 is cool. Are we doing, like, an anti-hero
06:18 type thing, or full-blown hero?
06:20 I mean, listen, that might be saying too much.
06:22 I, you know, I don't even know if Adam knows himself.
06:24 But, uh, yeah, yeah, that's
06:26 all to come. When they see what I have created
06:28 here, their wrath will dissipate.
06:32 And I love it to meet you also. So, the High Inquisitor,
06:34 I thought I was gonna see you in costume when you
06:36 showed up here. The High Evolutionary
06:38 doesn't just put on his clothes for everyone.
06:40 Do you know what I mean? You gotta pay a premium, you know, like...
06:42 I wasn't just gonna do that.
06:44 What can you tell me about his motivations?
06:46 I think in his head he believes he's doing the best
06:48 thing for the human... the humankind.
06:50 Um, which all
06:52 sort of narcissists and sociopaths
06:54 do. They don't really think they're doing
06:56 anything wrong, and they feel entitled to do what they do.
06:58 So, in many ways, he's, you know, he's
07:00 got... there's a weirdly attraction about
07:02 him because he's hugely intelligent and hugely
07:04 charismatic, but he's a complete...
07:06 you know, I don't know if I can swear here, but
07:08 you know what I mean. He's a complete
07:10 piece of shit. And that combination
07:12 is always fun to play, right? And it's
07:14 always fun to watch, 'cause do you love him? Do you hate him?
07:16 How much do you hate him? How much do you love him? Do you find
07:18 yourself being drawn to that, you know?
07:20 Yeah. Talk to me about just
07:22 James' dialogue switchover from
07:24 Peacemaker to Guardians.
07:26 In tone and delivery, is
07:28 there any difference in it? Do you find a
07:30 special nuance between one or the other?
07:32 Well, with this character, it's so different
07:34 to anything that was
07:36 in Peacemaker. And I think James...
07:38 I don't know how much of the dialogue
07:40 he... because he wrote most of it without ever
07:42 having met me, and then tweaked some things after he met
07:44 me. And I think this guy is very different.
07:46 There's nothing of Mern that I played
07:48 in Peacemaker in this guy, apart from me
07:50 playing it. And that's what James can do.
07:52 He can hit you emotionally,
07:54 make you laugh and stuff, but his strength is really
07:56 character. People think, because
07:58 of the genre and it's so funny, it's all about
08:00 plot and... you know what I mean? But James
08:02 focuses on character. And this character
08:04 was so unique. He came to me straight away as soon
08:06 as I read the script. And
08:08 so for me, it was a completely
08:10 different beast from, you know, Peacemaker.
08:12 We're all dying to see what came out of it, so...
08:14 So knowing that this is the
08:16 end of this iteration, what do you remember
08:18 about your last day of filming?
08:20 I think I... I gave
08:22 a speech to our crew,
08:24 to our cast, to James.
08:26 I just remember being
08:28 overcome with emotion and
08:30 you know, the feelings of gratitude
08:32 and the blessings of having James as our
08:34 director on this film and all
08:36 three films. He's an auteur
08:38 and a visionary and we're just so lucky
08:40 that he was
08:42 with us and that Disney
08:44 brought him back to be our
08:46 director. And so I just remember
08:48 this is the kind of tsunami of gratitude.
08:50 It had to mean everything to be able to finish with him.
08:52 It literally meant everything, man.
08:54 I heard you talking about the last day
08:56 on set. I'd more rather know about the last
08:58 page you wrote in the script
09:00 when you finally put it down and said,
09:02 "I'm done with it." I never put it down, man.
09:04 I don't. I never put it down.
09:06 I'm constantly, like, retooling
09:08 stuff. Not in a big
09:10 way, because I've had the
09:12 basic script for years.
09:14 But, you know, I'm always
09:16 rewriting stuff. I'm always
09:18 writing down new lines
09:20 that I throw the cast
09:22 while we're shooting. Just constantly
09:24 throwing them new lines.
09:26 Because I have stuff in my mind
09:28 that I like and I know it's gonna be better
09:30 if I just throw it to them and they say it
09:32 as opposed to them reading it and rehearsing it.
09:34 So, yeah, I'm always
09:36 writing. I never want to take for granted
09:38 the fact that we got you to come back and that you got
09:40 to close this off.
09:42 Yeah, so congratulations. Thank you, man.
09:48 You know, this is the end of The Guardians,
09:50 but is it the beginning of Adam Warlock's journey?
09:52 You know, I don't know. I certainly
09:54 hope so. Super sad
09:56 to think about the idea that Guardians
09:58 is ending. But, um,
10:00 yeah, you know, hopefully
10:02 Adam goes on to have some more
10:04 adventures and I'm certainly down if Marvel
