00:20 that it was based off of,

00:22 God is mentioned at the end,

00:23 but he was not a character.

00:24 And I think in the way that they

00:27 so deftly expanded the film,

00:30 they decided to include him as a narrator.

00:32 - Well, and we licensed God's story,

00:33 so we could finally fold it in.

00:35 - That's right.

00:40 And I'd seen the show so many times,

00:42 and was very good friends with Josh and Aaron,

00:45 and then they were very,

00:46 very generous to ask me to be involved.

00:57 in our 20s in a basement,

01:01 'cause we could be the children and the parents,

01:03 'cause they each sort of meet the one.

01:04 We were like, it just--

01:05 - Right, it just was easy to do as two people.

01:07 - Easy to do as two.

01:08 - But so, just the stage show was so quick and fast,

01:12 so they find out they're twins in the first song.

01:14 We take longer.

01:16 You know, we get to live in the beats more,

01:17 and sort of explore the characters a little bit more.

01:20 - And then add--

01:21 - And cast Tony winners.

01:22 - And cast Tony winners.

01:23 Yeah, and Emmy winners.

01:25 And Grammy winners, quite frankly.

01:26 - Which we wanted to do at UCB,

01:27 but Tony winners won't work for negative money,

01:30 it turns out, and so.

01:32 - Hmm, interesting.

01:34 - I don't know, they must have been drunk.

01:39 I think they blacked out.

01:39 - They were in a sassy mood.

01:41 Yeah, we sent them the script.

01:43 We sent them a video of the original stage show,

01:45 and they--

01:47 - They responded to the material.

01:51 - And we were thrilled.

01:52 - Yeah.

01:53 - We were thrilled.

01:54 We were like, well, in a perfect world,

01:55 it would just be, you know, Nathan Lane,

01:56 and Megan Mullally, and Megan Thee Stallion,

01:58 and Earl "Prin" Bowen, and then, you know,

02:00 it all came true.

02:01 So it really was fabulous.

02:02 - But yeah, they are legends, they're so funny,

02:05 they're pros, it was just, it was a pleasure.

02:09 It was a blast.

02:10 - And then even peripheral people from their worlds

02:12 and lives, with kind of like Nick Offerman being on set,

02:14 it was just like, oh my gosh,

02:15 we get to rub shoulders with these legends.

02:18 - And they with us, you know,

02:19 I think they regard us as peers, as equally famous.

02:23 - Similar IMDbs, almost to a T.

02:25 (laughing)

02:27 You know, you scroll and scroll and scroll on mine,

02:29 and you don't hit the bottom, sort of like them.

02:30 - Mine known for is Will and Grace.

02:33 - Yeah, of course, yes.

02:35 - And mine is Angels in America, Perestroika.

02:38 - Yes, yes.

02:40 And mine is Hot Girl Shit.

02:41 - Yes.

02:42 - That's what I'm known for, doing Hot Girl Shit.

02:44 So, we're very similar to these people.

02:47 Couple of them exist almost the same,

02:49 and some got like broken apart and rebuilt,

02:51 and then like several new ones,

02:53 which Carl St. Lucie, who's our fabulous composer,

02:55 they wrote all these songs,

02:57 and Mary Stavris, the executive music producer,

02:59 like helped make them incredible.

03:01 So yeah, there's like some that existed in the stage show,

03:04 but are, you know, got a glam up, frankly,

03:06 and then some that were brand new for the film.

03:09 - Song?

03:09 - Favorite song that I wrote, Bitch.

03:11 (laughing)

03:12 - I mean, the Megan Thee Stallion song is--

03:15 - It's crazy that she's doing it.

03:17 - It's quite fun.

03:18 - Yes.

03:19 - I do like, I like the duet that Nathan and Megan

03:23 sing Lonely.

03:24 - Yeah.

03:25 - That's where--

03:26 - Which is sort of, you know, it's gonna make you cry.

03:29 - Oh, very.

03:31 - But truly, it is a really emotional moment.

03:33 - And they both just sort of,

03:35 in the middle of this like madcap farce of a movie,

03:37 decide to just sort of like act the shit out of it

03:39 for a few minutes.

03:42 - Yeah, exactly.

03:44 - So I would say those are probably the favorites.

03:45 - Yeah.

03:46 - The three of us stayed in the same hotel in Burbank,

03:48 and then on nights--

03:52 - We were not seeing a human who wasn't like tested that day.

03:55 - But we would have little nights where we would go

03:57 to the hot tub and just sit and gab,

03:59 and those were really special.

04:31 but also we shot on this little chicken shit lot

04:35 in North Hollywood, and it was just us there,

04:37 so it felt very summer camp,

04:39 where everyone there was working on this kooky little movie,

04:41 and we shot it in 20 days,

04:43 so it felt very summer camp.

04:47 - We play the twins, Trevor and Craig,

04:50 who are alpha male, self-obsessed.

04:54 - Straight man drags.

04:55 - Straight man drags.

04:56 - You know, like what a drag queen does for women,

04:58 we're sort of doing for the idea of the straight man.

05:00 - Yeah, so those are our guys.

05:02 - Yeah.

05:03 My character is, I think, really eager

05:09 to share this new addition to,

05:11 it's not only, you know what I realized?

05:13 It's not that he even wants to add it

05:15 as a new book in the Bible,

05:16 it's the first book in the new, new Testament.

05:20 So it's kicking off a whole third book.

05:22 - You did more work than I ever realized.
